From an NGO perspective things are also pretty smooth. The signup process is relatively simple, although at present only verified users (with the V next to their name) can sign up. Although I’m not generally a fan of that kind of restriction, it makes perfect sense here as it allows Sina to verify that organizations are who they say they are, and ensures that users aren’t being asked to donate their money to scams. For those legit NGOs that do get signed up, Sina has the same options users get — everything from financial donations to charity auctions — so that nonprofits can choose the kind of campaign that’s right for them.

All in all, I’m very impressed with the new Gongyi weibo platform. This is the sort of thing that I wish Sina would push harder. Enterprise weibo may bring in the big bucks, but it’s platforms like this that can really show people what weibo brings to the table that can benefit society.

If you love traveling, here’s a mobile app that takes note of all your key travel details that you want to keep track of or share.

Travelog is developed by the four-person team at Korea-based startup CultStory. Prior to the development of Travelog, there was already a Korean version (translated as Travel Diary) launched specifically for the Korean domestic market in March 2011. However, the team decided to widen its scope to the global market with updated and improved functions, and officially launched an English Travelog for iOS in May of this year.

Travelogは4人組チームの韓国に拠点を置くCultStoryによって開発された。Travelogの開発に先立って、すでに2011年3月に特に韓国国内市場向けにローンチされた韓国版（Travel Diaryと翻訳）が出ていた。だが、チームは機能の更新、向上によって世界市場に領域を広げようと決意し、今年5月にiOS用の英語版Travelogを正式にローンチした。

Founder Jepil Yun explained to us that during a trip to New York, he missed several beautiful attractions nearby where he was visiting, and this could have been avoided if he had a tool that could give him location-based information on-the-go. And so they came up with Travelog.

Registration can be done via social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter, or you can opt for an email registration. Travelers can then upload their personal notes, recommendations, and photos on their personal log, which becomes like a trip diary. Travelog also offers seven types of photo filters which can be applied to photos prior to uploading.

While logging trips, the Travelog app has a Foursquare-like check-in function whereby locations are mapped and pinned, with the relevant country flag displayed. However, it only allows users to check-in from their current, exact location. This would mean that in order to log your travels when you are overseas, GPS must be enabled at that point.

Travelog also allows users to discover other travelogs within the app, from all over the world. Users can browse through recent feeds by city, or they can follow a specific traveler. In addition, travelogs are not only limited to in-app viewing. Upon registration, each user will be allocated a specific URL that can be entered and viewed in the browser, a page sort of like a photo blog.

Although there are several big competitors like TripColour and Gogobot – or more general social services like Path and Instagram – Jepil Yun says that the main, unique point of Travelog is that it focuses on documenting your travel experiences while also giving you useful information. The startup will be introducing new features such as travel recommendations and the creation of photobooks and slideshows from your Travelogs.

For Sex Education, Just Tap ThatApp

We recently told you about Blood Donors Network, one of the six great ideas from Social Innovation Camp Asia which tool place earlier this month in Kuala Lumpur. Blood Donors Network was awarded second place at the event, finishing behind one other team.

The winning team is the makers of ThatApp, a mobile application that aims to help to answer teens’ questions about sex. It aspires to help young people make smart, informed decisions about their sexual health. The name of the app is intentionally subtle, in order to make sure users don’t feel shy or embarrassed.

今月初めにクアラルンプールで開催されたSocial Innovation Camp Asiaから生まれた６つの素晴らしいアイデアの１つBlood Donors Networkについて、つい最近お話しした。Blood Donors Networkはこのイベントで、第２位を受賞し、別のチームの下位という結果で終わった。

優勝チームは十代の若者の性に関する質問に答えるのを手助けするのを目的としたモバイルアプリThatAppのメーカーだ。メーカーでは、若者が性の医学に関して賢明で十分な情報を得た上での意思決定を手助けすることを目指している。アプリ名はユーザーが恥ずかしがったり気後れしたりしないよう意図的にぼかしてある。

When I asked about the SI Camp experience, ThatApp representative Wong Chee Yan spoke of it very highly:

I got to know so many people that shared the same passion and vision, which is really very motivating to keep me going down this tough road of fighting for social causes. […] There were so many people I could learn with in term of business development, tech-related stuff, presentation, etc.

表具とは紙・布を張り、巻物・掛け軸・書画帳・屏風(びょうぶ)・襖(ふすま)などを仕立てること。
私はこの技術、趣、などに魅了されてしまった。

そして私は、その伝統技術を学んで１級表装技能士の認定を受けた。

現代の表具には機械をつかった掛軸、屏風の作成、キレ、和紙の作成も

Hyogu, a paper-hanging is one of the traditional culture of Japan.
Hyogu refers an action of mounting rolled draperes, handing scrolls, paintings and calligraphies, folding screens, paper sliding doors, etc. by stretching paper and cloth over a base.
I was fascinated with this art and atmosphere.

And I learned the traditional art and was certified as a first rank paper-hanger.

Nowdays, people use machines to make handing scrolles and folding screens.
Although cloth and Japanese traditional paper are produced cheaply in large quantities, I am still fascinated with a hand-built craftsmanship.

Once, I honed my skills of mounting working under a senior paper-hanger.
Using a machine, it would be easy to plane a wood frame of folding screens.

Yet Block 71 is only part of the solution. As one entrepreneur put it, an environment can only come alive with creativity because of the community. Block 71 can only elevate to the standard of its denizens.

The government too recognizes this, and with its foresight, recently launched a new program to develop entrepreneurial instincts from the secondary school level onwards. It’s a sensible and comprehensive program, and if it fails, it won’t be because of bad planning. It’ll be undone by bad execution.

So unless there is drastic improvement, Singapore’s innovation output, relative to its investments, will continue to underperform. Think of it as a major infrastructural project — perhaps a highway — that becomes underused and hence a massive waste of money.

Startup Genome is not the first to highlight this issue: Last year’s Global Innovation Index, released by Insead, also noted Singapore’s yawning gap between institutional investment and innovation output.

そこで抜本的な改善がない限り、シンガポールのイノベーション創出は、投資に比して、伸び悩みを続けるだろう。たとえば高速道路のような主要なインフラ整備計画のようなものだと考えてみると、利用不足になり、その先は大金の無駄遣いということになる。

この問題を浮き彫りにするのはスタートアップGenomeが初めてではない。昨年のInseadによってリリースされたGlobal Innovation Indexもシンガポールにおける機関投資とイノベーション産出との間の大きな隔たりを指摘した。

Here’s what the report said: ”Singapore’s Innovation Efficiency Index ranking is low (37th among high-income countries, 94th in the general rankings); this shows up in its relative weak performance in the Output Sub-Index, where it is ranked 17th overall (Scientific outputs at 17th place and Creative outputs at 33rd).”

Before I go on, let me introduce a caveat: Although Startup Genome was able to capture data from about 500 startups in Singapore through various sources, which does seem substantial, the actual quality of the data remains opaque. We still don’t know how much of the information is gathered from Startup Compass versus public data sources like Crunchbase and Angelist, how complete is the data that has been provided, and how transparent are Asian startups compared to their Silicon Valley peers.

But while we can wait for Startup Genome to refine its data, there’s nothing stopping us from drawing some insight from what we already have. As imperfect as it may be, Startup Genome may be the complete source of publicly available data of its kind at this juncture.

So here’s what the report says about Singapore: The ecosystem is current ranked 17th out of 20 cities; it scores high marks in terms of funding and talent (in 8th place for both), but ranks near the bottom for everything else (between 16th to 20th).

だが、Startup Genomeのデータの精度が上がるのを待ちながらも、すでにあるものの中からいくらかの見識を導くことを止めることはできない。現在のところ、Startup Genomeは同じくらい不完全かもしれないが、この手の公的入手が可能なデータとしては完成されたソースかもしれない。
