Alibaba’s investment in gaming is the same tactic that Chinese online portal giant Tencent used previously. Tencent invested US$231 in Riot Games, the creators of popular multiplayer online battle arena game League of Legends, and US$330 million in Epic Games, the folks behind action games like Gears of War and Unreal Tournament.

It’s WeChat’s first push into ecommerce and mobile services in a market other than its native China. For a sense of scale, WeChat users booked over 100,000 taxi rides in nine days in China (connected to the Didi Dache taxi-booking app, which only operates in China) when that started in January this year.

Joon affirms that, as promised on launch day, an online payment system for the WeChat-booked taxi rides is still being worked on by Tencent (HKG:0700), the maker of the app. He adds that Tencent and EasyTaxi are both marketing the tie-up in a sign of how keen they are to work together.

EasyTaxi’s main rival in Singapore and across Southeast Asia is GrabTaxi.

Alibaba invests $15 million in US-based luxury e-commerce site

New York-based 1stdibs, an online American retailer for fancy interior design, decoration and fashion, just raked in $15 million in series C funding from Chinese e-commerce titan Alibaba, according to Recode.

In business for 13 years, 1stdibs (terrible name for such a high-brow retailer, by the way) isn’t exactly a startup anymore. It’s raised $117 million from previous investors, most of it since 2011.

The strategic investment will help Alibaba better serve China’s fast-growing consumer market for high-dollar luxury goods. 1stdibs CEO David Rosenblatt notes one-third of his company’s business is outside the US.

WeChat leaps into banking, lets users set up online investment fund

Tencent (HKG:0700) has just joined China’s personal finance race alongside Alibaba and Baidu (NASDAQ:BIDU) with the latest addition to China’s most popular messaging app, WeChat. WeChat now has a “wealth” section where users can store their savings in a new monetary fund straight from their smartphones via TenPay, Tencent’s third-party payment system.

Whereas we originally thought the amount of money a user could deposit would be unlimited, TechWeb reports that amount is capped at RMB 1 million ($165,400). The annual rate on the fund is 6.435 percent, and it requires no minimum investment. The fund is managed by Huaxia Bank.

MPIジャパンチャプターは1月10日、東京の六本木アカデミーヒルズで「新春賀詞交換会」を開催。会員やMICE関連のキーパーソン157人が参加し、ネットワーキングや情報交換を行なった。

were from Sapporo, Fukuoka・Okinawa and all the way from Korea. The party was the largest ever. Among　20,000 MPI members around the world, 70 percent of them are women. Of all the employees of MPI Japan Chaper, up to 28 percent are women. I'm going to increase the number of women and I'd like to contribute women's power to business environment enhancement of meeting industries.

Rewarding blood donors

The theme of the campaign is Release the Hero Within You with the tagline: “If only one percent more people in Singapore donated blood, shortages would disappear”.

With that in mind, when a user donates blood, the app allows them to check in their donations by scanning a QR code on posters at the blood centers or mobile blood donation drives. Then, as a reward, an augmented reality video thanks the donator for their selfless and heroic acts.

Crowdfunding platform Medifund goes live to help medical students fund their education

A few months back, Philippine startup Medifund introduced the idea of helping medical students pursue their education through a crowdfunding platform. The aim is to address the shortage of doctors in the Philippines and Asia. After a few months of development, the platform is now live for medical students worldwide.

Medifund founder Jossy Onwude is also a medical student. So he understand how costly it is to study medicine. He has also been a witness to friends having to stop attending school due to lack of financial means. This is the reason he came up with Medifund.
