China VC Investment Grows 50% in 2011, 2012 Will Be Different

The Shanghai Daily reported yesterday that VC firms in China, invested in 50% more Chinese start-ups in 2011 compared to 2010. According to China Venture, a research firm, 976 firms received investment valued at US$8.95 Billion. In 2011, the average investment size was US$9.17 Million, up 30% from 2010.

However the second half of 2011, saw a slowdown in investment. Key reasons were the world economic news of doom and gloom, a saturated investment market and fierce competition among VCs. In the fourth quarter alone, the number of investments dropped by 43%. The trend is reflected in discussions with many entrepreneurs in Beijing about the difficulty of securing investment recently and in the coming months ahead. They are saying that 2012 is going to be a massive storm and start-ups need to prepare by scaling back costs to survive it.

Lightspeed Ventures Raising US$875 Million for US/China Fund

Bloomberg reported that Lightspeed Ventures, an international VC firm is said to be finishing raising a new fund worth $875 million. $200 million is said to be ear marked for China based companies.

This reflects a growing trend for U.S. VC’s to get a taste of the burgeoning Chinese market where start-ups can take advantage of the enormous opportunities to scale. In September last year, China’s most prominent start-up incubator, Innovation Works closed a US$180 million fund. The fund was backed by famous investors like Ron Conway of SV Angel and Yuri Milner of DST Global.

Amazon Launches Junglee.com for Indian Market

Last summer there were reports that Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) would be entering the Indian market in early 2012. This has turned out to indeed be the case, as this past week the company finally launched its online shopping website junglee.com to serve Indian consumers.

Amazon says that the new web service will offer over 12 million products from 14,000 brands, and will allow customers to buy from retailers including “Homeshop18, UniverCell, Hidesign, Gitanjali, The Bombay Store, Fabindia, Bata India Limited, Dabur Uveda, Microsoft India Store, Reebok, and Amazon.com.”

What are you thinking in terms of expansion into Southeast Asia?

That’s exactly the question I was anticipating – why are we here? In the last year, we have made four or five investments in companies that are headquartered here [in Southeast Asia] and have operations at least in India, perhaps the majority of the operations in India, but they increasingly have a value proposition and a footprint in more countries in Southeast Asia. We have currently maybe half a dozen companies doing business in Southeast Asia actively and we see many more of those.
