Hugo Barra talks about Xiaomi’s progress in Indonesia and India

Hugo Barra from Xiaomi joins us on stage this afternoon at Startup Asia Jakarta 2014 to talk about Xiaomi and its progress in Indonesia.

He says Xiaomi was “clearly world-standard” when he was considering making the move away from Google’s Android team last year, and he’d been following its progress even before that because of early links between Google and Xiaomi’s founders.

“We want to be part of everything that Google does – we want to be early adopters,” says Barra to interviewer Jeremy Wagstaff from Thompson Reuters.

Before discussing Indonesia, the chat turns toward India. Barra says “the community has really embraced us” in India, and the brand now has a number of fans – “Mi Fans” – in the country. Yesterday they had an informal, ad hoc meetup that nearly 70 people came to in a restaurant in Mumbai. He adds that Xiaomi is seeing the same kind of reception in Indonesia.

Baidu Offers Extra Cloud Storage on Some New Qualcomm-Powered Smartphones

China’s biggest search engine has buddied up with chip-maker Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM) to offer extra free cloud storage to people who buy certain Android-based, Qualcomm-powered smartphones. It’ll see Baidu’s (NASDAQ:BIDU) new Dropbox-like service, called WangPan, offering those new phone-owners double the usual cloud storage space.

The deal covers phones sold in China that are powered by Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 8×25 and 8x25Q chips. For people who don’t give a crap about what chips are inside their phones, it just means they’ll get more free cloud storage if they buy phones or tablets like the Huawei G330D/G330C (Ascend), Coolpad 7266, the K-touch W760, Hisense U950, or Lenovo S686. Not a hugely sexy list of hardware, but we noted last week that domestic brands now make up 60 percent of the China smartphone market – the top three are the afore-mentioned Lenovo, CoolPad, and Huawei – so this Baidu-Qualcomm deal has the potential to reach a lot of people.

How much extra storage is it worth? New phone buyers will get double the usual 15GB of Baidu Wangpan storage for free – a useful 30GB – for the duration of the phone’s lifespan.

Baidu spokesperson Kaiser Kuo explains that the Huawei Ascend model (pictured above) is particularly significant:

The Huawei G330D, which uses the Snapdragon MSM 8225 processor, is the first flagship dual-core device among the customized smartphone series issued by China Unicom.

Indeed, China Unicom – the second-largest telco in terms of 3G subscribers – is pushing that Huawei model hard these days, selling it for just 1,399 RMB (US$222). The tweaked Android 4.0 in that phone has had its Google search replaced with Baidu’s, as you can also spot in the photo up top.

As for the newer of those two Qualcomm chips, Baidu’s communications director adds: “The [Snapdragon] 8x25Q is a new processor announced only at the end of September, so there are no commercial devices yet.”

This partnership indicates also how seriously Qualcomm is taking the China market these days, where some experts reckon there could be as many as 500 million smartphones by the end of next year. A great many of those will be running Android, and will be low- to mid-range devices that cost less than $2,000 RMB ($319).

Seeing this, Daniel believes that Homerent has home ground advantage in Japan. He further explained:

[We’re] able to work directly with the Japanese marketplace where collaborative consumption has always been difficult to adopt. We managed to build a trust-based platform and help mitigate safety issues, help support issues in multiple languages (Japanese, French, and English), and assist in the cultural barriers. We also are aware of local jurisdictions and are compliant with local laws and practices.

While the business model of Homerent is somewhat similar to its competitors, the unique Japanese culture has made it hard for foreign businesses to thrive there. Daniel believes most Japanese wouldn’t rely on foreign services that aren’t even based in Japan to rent out their houses. Early traction at Homerent seems to suggest that there could be demand for a Japanese-run (or at least Japan-based) home rentals platform. The startup, which is currently self-funded, started operations in September and has seen its users rack up a total of about 400 nights rented in various properties – and that’s with only minimal promotion.

In a nice boost to the team’s spirits, Homerent recently managed to grab the U.S. Ambassador’s Award at the Entrepreneur Awards Japan 2012. Daniel said:

If anything, this nomination and winning this prestigious award validates the business and dedication of the team behind Homerent.jp.

Perhaps some of you guys might have heard of Daniel’s name familiar at our Startup Asia Jakarta conference in June. Daniel was actually one of the founding members at MySQL who now also runs SkySQL, a competitor of Oracle Japan. And yes, Daniel is running two startups now and is in a confident mood that he can do well on both fronts with great people helping him run the show.

I need to know a couple of things before I can start the claim with Fedex. Does it still work correctly? If it does then I assume you just want to get the glass fixed and keep the item and if it does not work you would like a refund, correct? Do you know how much it is to just replace the front? I cannot start until I get more pictures and find out if it is a total claim or partial claim. Make sure I get more pictures of the packaging and the unit also. Once the range is
displayed, continue to hold the POWER button down for approximately 2 seconds while holding the
aiming circle on the flag and keeping the unit as steady as possible so as to allow the inclinometer
enough time to measure slope. Then release the POWER button. Once you have released the power
button, a degree of angle and compensated range will be displayed beneath the standard distance as
seen below.
In this example, the true distance is 162 yards, slope is +4 degrees, and the
compensated range is 173 yards. The “ ” symbol means “Play-As”, so instead of
playing as 162 yards, “play-as” 173 yards.

The Slope mode will
automatically compute an angle compensated range based upon distance and
slope angle determined by the laser rangefinder and built-in inclinometer. This
data is then combined with internal algorithmic formulas dealing with average
club use and ball trajectories. The angle compensated range provides direction
on how to play the shot (i.e. add distance if an incline, subtract distance if a decline).
Once in this mode, you will see a “ ° ” in the field of view informing you that you are in the Slope
+/- Mode. Press the POWER button to obtain distance to the flag or other objects.

Once in this mode, press the POWER button to turn the unit on. Next, align the aiming circle reticle onto the flag that you want distance to. Next, press and hold the POWER button and move the laser slowly over the flag or desired object until a circle surrounds the flag indicator. If the laser beam recognized more than one object (i.e. flag and background trees), distance of the flag will be displayed and a circle will surround the PinSeeker indicator informing the user that distance to the flag (i.e. closer object) is being displayed in the LCD (as seen below). There may be times when only the laser beam only sees one
object in its path.

The TOUR V2 WITH PINSEEKER was especially designed with golfers in mind. The selective targeting
modes allow you to adjust the performance parameters of the unit to suit your specific situation and
environment. To move from one mode to another, press the POWER button once to turn on the unit. While
looking through the eyepiece, press the MODE button and quickly release. The different targeting modes
available and mode indicators are listed below:
PinSeeker (LCD Indicator - ) Ever have trouble getting distance to the flag? This advanced mode allows
easy acquisition of the flag without inadvertently getting distances to background targets (i.e. trees) that
have stronger signal strength

SELECTIVE TARGETING™モード

If you are
changing from yards to meters, a change in unit of measure will be indicated by the illumination of the M
for meter indicator while the Y for Yard indicator is turned off. If you are changing from meters to yards,
the opposite will occur. The TOUR V2 will return to the last unit of measure setting used each time the
unit is turned on.
ACTIVE LASER
Crosshairs surrounding the aiming circle indicate that the laser is being transmitted. Once a range has
been acquired, you can release the power button. The crosshairs surrounding the circle will disappear
once the power button has been released (i.e. the laser is no longer being transmitted).

もし、ヤードからメーターに表示を変えようとすると、その変更は、メーターインジケーターに、ヤードの場合Ｙである代わりに、Ｍが点灯することで表示されます。メーターからヤードに変えようとすると、反対のことが起こります。TOUR V2は機器に電源がはいると、前回利用した計測のセッティングに戻ります。

The maximum distance for most
objects is 700 yards/640 meters while for highly reflective objects the maximum is 1000 yards
Note: You will get both longer and shorter maximum distances depending on the reflective properties of the
particular target and the environmental conditions at the time the distance of an object is being measured.
The color, surface finish, size and shape of the target all affect reflectivity and range. The brighter the color,
the longer the range. Red is highly reflective, for example, and allows longer ranges than the color black,
which is the least reflective color. A shiny finish provides more range than a dull one. A small target is more
difficult to range than a larger target

ほとんどの目的物に対する、最長の距離は、700ヤード/640メーターですが、非常に反射しやすい目的物の場合、1000ヤードになります。
