Tripid Wallet

In the earlier releases of Tripid, payment had been a direct transaction between driver and passenger. With this re-launch, though, the app now has a built-in payment system, which makes it easier for users to pay and receive payments. Users can top-up their accounts with PhP100, 300, 500 and 1,000 denominations (US$2.28, 6.85, 11.42 and 22.84, respectively). Top-up payments can be made via PayPal, G-Cash and Dragonpay. Co-founder Mike told e27 that the team is also working on a mobile credits-based system, which will let users pay with their cellular bill or prepaid credits.

Even with direct payments now being discouraged, drivers can easily withdraw their earnings from their Tripid Wallet into their PayPal accounts. Mike says the team is working on integrating their wallet system into the mobile app for more convenient top-ups and withdrawals.

Here’s where the Kickstart Ventures-backed startup‘s business model actually comes, as the startup takes a small cut from ride sharing revenues. As it matches demand with supply, I can say it leads to an optimal level of resource-sharing amongst drivers and passengers. This is what makes Tripid one of my favorite local startups so far, especially because it’s utilitarian, practical and eco-friendly.

And as these individuals start to become more interested in the Vietnamese market or connect to local entrepreneurs, we’re starting to see a few benefits. For example, Nhom Mua, one of Vietnam’s top daily deals sites that saw exponential growth from 2011 to 2012 before it crashed, was under the management of a team of foreigners and overseas Vietnamese returnees.

7. Local and international events on the up: In the past, I’ve noted that Vietnam’s events have been growing very fast with the addition of new hackathons and local conferences. There’s everything from locally-organized events like StartMeUp to internationally licensed ones like DEMO ASEAN. It shows the level of interest in startups and entrepreneurship is not only organic and coming from the community, but it’s also an interest from more mature markets. This serves to feed the ecosystem.

8. More leaders than you think: I mentioned in my 10 actions post that Vietnam’s startup leaders are in hiding. That means there are more than you think. There are folks like Tai, founder and CEO of Socbay, one of Vietnam’s more successful mobile tech companies, who are considerably more low key about their moves and investments in the scene. Just because they’re in hiding doesn’t mean they’re not doing something. That makes for a more competitive atmosphere, but it’s also a resource that needs to be tapped into more.

Video playground Binumi looks to help students be better storytellers

Based in Thailand, Binumi aims to allow students to venture beyond their own classrooms with videos.

Imagine this: you’re a 13-year-old student tasked to work on a video presentation detailing the challenges a mountaineer might face en route Mount Everest. What’s the best you could do? I’m guessing there might be a few static images of the Earth’s highest mountain flashing on the screen as you share your presentation. You can’t get royalty-free images (unless you’re willing to spend a ton of money on it) and you certainly can’t go to Mount Everest.

Enter Binumi. The startup, founded by Anthony Copping, a former documentary filmmaker and avid traveler, has over a million videos and special effects clips, and more than 7,000 audio tracks – all royalty-free. His team, positioned all over the world, would go out and shoot videos and contribute to the enormous content pool we see today.

In fact, since their launch earlier this month, they have partnered up with 50 Thai educational institutions to see some 150,000 students on board.

Pricing

The official website shows three pricing packages: personal, commercial and education.

For personal accounts, there are three tiers to look at: trial, starter and plus. For trial personal accounts, it will only be free for 30 days and provide up to five music tracks, 10 video and audio clip downloads, 500 mb of storage space and a small 480 x 360 p video quality. Sounds reasonable, given how massive the content pool is.

Starter personal accounts go at US$9.99 per month, and offer up to over 200 music tracks, unlimited video and audio clip downloads, a medium 640 x 360 p video quality and unlimited still image downloads. Plus personal accounts then charge users US$24.99 per month and provide them with unlimited music tracks, video and audio clip downloads, still images and a high video quality of 1920 x 1080 p. It is important to note that these accounts also go at a discounted rate when users subscribe to more than three or 12 months at point of billing.

While commercial and education rates are undisclosed, it seems that users can store up to 10 gb of clips with the commercial account and only two gb on the education account. One thing I do not understand is why commercial accounts still have to keep the Binumi watermark on videos.

Not new, but noticeably absent from the original stars of crowdsourcing line-up was Kaggle, the world’s largest community of data scientists. Kaggle’s co-founder and CEO Anthony Goldbloom, also a champion kite surfer, raised $11M series A round from Khosla Ventures back in 2011.

The MacBook Air has already been updated (during WWDC 2013 in June), so we expect that the Retina MacBook Pro, Mac mini and iMac will follow.

Additionally, we know that Apple is planning to release its new Mac Pro and OS X Mavericks by the end of the year, so its October event could be an ideal time to tell us more about when we can expect them to become available.

While not discussed in MacGeneration's article, we've heard that Apple could be planning to update its Apple TV hardware in October, too, so we'll be looking out for that at the special event.

One report has event suggested that an iPhone 6 is on its way, but we are certainly not convinced that this is true.

Unfortunately, I do not have any of the RBZ 4 wood 17.5 heads left from last year. I only have 13 degree heads in that version. I do have this year's RBZ Stage 2 3HL 16.5 which is basically the 4 wood, but none from last year. Sorry. Also, I have not been able to get any SLDR tour heads as of yet, only retail ones at this point.

The duo, both National University of Singapore students, grew closer as part of a same team for an entrepreneurial competition. They later went on a backpacking trip together, and worked on several other projects. In fact, Ching waited a full year for Vish to graduate so they can start the company together.

“Starting Vault Dragon wasn’t a rash decision. It’s a business decision,” says Ching.

For Vault Dragon, currently in closed beta, the keyword is flexibility. Like Amazon Web Services, users only pay for what they use: Pricing is S$0.45 per box per day, plus an extra S$19.50 for delivery of vaults back to the user. That’s between S$30 to S$50 a month.

The transparent pricing is a marked contrast from self-storage companies, which do not disclose rates online.
