The next generation of chat apps will be group-centric

Last week, guest writer Spencer Ng sent us an article asking, “Is the market for mobile chat apps saturated?” The advice he gave to messaging apps entering the market was mostly geographic: aim for markets with a low saturation of similar apps and a high percentage of daily active users.

But even in markets that don’t fit those parameters, we are beginning to see new messaging apps with a slight twist: an emphasis on groups. Within two weeks of each other, China’s Sina released WeMeet, and Korea’s KakaoTalk released KakaoGroup. Both serve essentially the same function as a platform where groups – families, meetups, company employees, classmates, conference attendees, poker clubs, gang members, political coups, you name it – can privately talk among themselves.

しかし、こうしたパラメータに合わない市場においてすら、わずかなひねりを加えた新たなメッセージングアプリが現れてきている。それが、グループ重視型だ。二週間のうちに、中国のSinaはWeMeetを、韓国のKakaoTalkはKakaoGroupをそれぞれリリースした。どちらとも実質的に同じ機能のプラットフォームを有しており、そこでは家族、オフ会仲間、会社員、同級生、会議参加者、ポーカークラブ、ギャングメンバー、政治的クーデターといったどんなグループでも、個人的な話をすることができる。

A gap in the market

Right now, mobile social networking is essentially split into two types of relationships: one-on-one (WeChat, Line, KakaoTalk, Viber, WhatsApp) and one-on-everybody (Facebook, Twitter, Weibo, Renren). Sure, people still make group pages on Facebook, and I’m personally in a few group chats on WeChat, but neither of these cater specifically to private groups. Group chat apps take characteristics from both these categories, but maintain an exclusive practicality all their own.

今のところ、モバイルソーシャルネットワーキングはその結びつき方から、実質2つのタイプに分けられる。すなわち、１対１タイプ（WeChat、Line、KakaoTalk、Viber、WhatsApp）と、１対全員タイプ（Facebook、Twitter、Weibo、Renren）だ。確かに、Facebookにグループページを作成する人はいるし、私も個人的にはWeChatでいくつかグループチャットをしている。しかしどちらも、特に「個人グループ向けのサービス」というものではない。グループチャットアプリは、これらのカテゴリの両方の特性をもちながら、独占的な実用性を独自に維持するのだ。

WeMeet, for instance, features a shared group timeline. Here, users can post announcements or share updates that everyone should see and require more than a few hours’ shelf life. This is something you can do on the one-on-everybody platforms, but not the one-on-one. It’s annoying to scroll through 100 lines of idle chatter between group members on WeChat to find the messages that actually matter to me. Conversely, one-on-everybody platforms don’t offer good mobile options to simply chat with other group members.

例えばWeMeetは、グループタイムラインの共有機能がある。そこでユーザーは、発表や更新情報の共有を行うことができ、だれもが閲覧し、保存期間の延長を求めることもできる。これは、1対全型タイプのプラットフォームでは可能だが、一対一タイプでは無理だ。実際、自分に関係したメッセージをWeChatのグループメンバー間のおしゃべりから見つけるのに、100行をスクロールするのは面倒だ。逆に、1対全タイプのプラットフォームでは、他のグループメンバーとチャットをするためだけの専用モバイル・オプションは提供されていない。

With WeMeet, switching between the timeline and conversation takes literally just a swipe of your finger. This is a much faster and more efficient way to manage or communicate with a group, and it’s this gap in functionality messaging app makers are looking to fill.

WeMeetでは、タイムラインと会話の切り替えを、文字通り指一本で行える。グループ管理・通信を、従来よりもはるかに速くより効率的に行うことができる。そしてこれこそが、メッセージングアプリメーカーが埋めようと模索している、従来の機能に存在する「隙間」なのだ。

Get ready, here they come

WeMeet and KakaoGroup are just the beginning. In the coming months, I predict we’ll see several more of these in-between group messaging apps pop up, both from the big players and from startups. The big players will ultimately win out due to the fact they can incorporate their existing userbases, but startups have the chance to make a buck or two if they get acquired. Opportunities will also open up for enterprise versions.

The winner will be the one that can gain and retain the most traction, but it’s far too early to call. Still, KakaoGroup and WeMeet have a chronological advantage because, as they say, the early bird gets the worm.

WeMeetとKakaoGroupは始まりに過ぎない。今後数ヶ月の間に、大手企業とスタートアップの双方から、こうした「中間タイプ」のグループメッセージングアプリが現れてくると予想される。既存のユーザー層を取り込むことができるという点で、最終的には大手企業が勝ち残るだろう。しかし、スタートアップにも少しは稼げるチャンスがある。彼らが買収されればの話だが。門戸は一般企業にも開かれている。

勝者は最大のトランザクションを獲得・維持できるだろう。しかしその名を大声で叫ぶのはまだ早い、早すぎる。それでも、KakaoGroupとWeMeetには先発という強みがある。いわゆる、「早起きは三文の徳」というやつだ。

KakaoTalk looks to keep groups in touch with new KakaoGroup app

Yesterday, KaKaoTalk got a major makeover, and today it launches a new app in the form of KakaoGroup, a private, mobile group service that allows users to share updates and photos in a private group.

Last year, the Korean startup launched a free group voice chat service for up to five participants within the KakaoTalk app. This time, KakaoGroup is a separate app that users can download for Android or iOS, and it supports both Korean and English. To use KakaoGroup, one must have a Kakao account.

Kakao says the team is making “continuous efforts to listen to [its] users and develop services to accommodate their needs.” The team adds:

KakaoGroup was developed as a means to resolve the most frequently raised inconveniences that users faced during their group communication experience in KakaoTalk.

Group dynamics

KakaoGroup users can easily create groups and share updates and photos with their select group of friends or family. To create a group, users only need to set a group name and cover image, and invite KakaoTalk friends to the group by tapping on “invite members” on the members page. KakaoGroup invitations are sent to each member through KakaoGroup notifications or through KakaoTalk.

The first creator of the group is the “group host” and has the right to change the group name and group cover image. Any member in the group can also invite other friends to the group, but only the group host can oust a member out of the group. The host can also transfer the position to another member in the group of choice.

Though KakaoGroup is a separate app, members of a group can continue their conversation in KakaoTalk through the “go to group chatroom” option.

グループを作成した人は「グループ・ホスト」となり、グループ名やグループカバー画像を変更する権利を持つ。グループ内のメンバーであればだれでも同グループに他の友人を招待することができるが、グループ・ホストだけがグループからメンバーを外すことができる。また、選択したグループ内の別のメンバーへポジションを移送することができる。

A few months back, we saw Israeli-based group chat app Hoozin pitch at our Startup Arena in Singapore. Sina also launched a similar group chat app late last month in China. WeChat likewise, has a group chat feature for up to 40 people, but doesn’t offer so many features as the new KakaoGroup. As of July, KakaoTalk counts 100 million in its user-base.

Mobile learning startup Coursepad wins Most Innovative Startup Award at Ideas.Inc.

The Ideas.Inc. Business Challenge, organised by Nanyang Technological University, is an annual elimination-style startup competition in Singapore that guides entrepreneurs under 35 from idea to fundraising. Over the past three months, 12 startups were selected to receive SGD$ 50k for concept prototyping and pitching to partnering angel investors at the end of challenge. This year, with a quieter closed-door approach, the challenge concluded with its StartingUp 2013 conference on 31st August.

Winning big this year is Mobile learning startup Coursepad, who walked away with the Most Innovative Startup Award. Inclusive of this is an investment of up to SGD 200k.

Soft-launching its platform at the StartingUp conference, Coursepad aims to revolutionise workplace learning by converting e-learning courses into fun social games. ”In traditional e-learning, it’s all about just reading materials, completing tests and hoping the learning sticks. Coursepad turns learning objectives into fun challenges that learners can complete with their friends,” says Kevin Chan, Coursepad’s CEO and co-founder.

Education is a sector that is beginning to find new offerings with a mobile and social learning slant. Coursepad does face competition from other companies such as Teamie in providing a collaborative and mobile learning platform.

However, with pilot clients from the team’s past experience at a previous events iPad rental company, the team does have a clear direction in its product and distribution channels. Coursepad is currently having trials with companies in the training, education and financial industry.
