In the last couple of months, we have seen Renren partnering with different corporations to make its social networking service even more exciting for Chinese users. These partnerships include:

・Weddings – a social wedding platform with Recruit of Japan
・Gaming – Integrating Popcap’s Plants vs. Zombies for Renren’s social gamers
・Credit – A “social” credit card, in partnership with China Merchants Bank

この2カ月において、私達はRenrenが中国のユーザーにとってよりエキサイティングなソーシャルネットワークサービスを作るため、別の法人とパートナーになったのを見ている。

From a bird’s eye view, it seems that Renren is pretty scattered and has no clear product direction at the moment. But the company is doing well financially, as its latest financial report shows that net losses were down 78.5 percent from last year, before its IPO, whilst net revenues were up 46.6 percent to US$20.6 million, and online advertising revenues were up 100.5 percent to US$8.1 million. Despite this positive growth, the market doesn’t seem to be convinced with the Chinese social network’s performance though; its stock price has plummeted like a falling rock.

上から見下ろした視点から、Renrenはかなり四散し、現時点で明確な製品の方向性がないように見える。しかし、企業は財政的に上手くいっており、最も新しい財政リポートは去年から損益を78.5％減少したと示している。IPO前、純収益は46.6％上昇のUS$2060万で、オンライン広告収益は100.5％上昇のUS$810万であった。この明確な成長にもかかわらず、市場は中国のソーシャルネットワークのパフォーマンスに納得しているようには見えない；その株価は落石のように急落している。

With that said, it remains to be seen exactly how this partnership will pan out. The press release certainly makes it sound like it’s all roses, gumdrops, and fairy tales ahead for Renren and MSN China, but then, that’s what press releases do. Reality sometimes has other ideas.

2 Years Old, 200 Millions Users, and Sina Weibo Is On NASDAQ

It took Twitter 5 years to reach 200 millions, but for its counterpart in China, Sina Weibo has claimed that it reached 200 millions users at its 2-years old birthday.

To celebrate this impressive performance, Sina even managed to get its Weibo on NASDAQ, with the greeting Share happiness with 200 million people here!.

We have spent lots of words talking about Weibo these days, so better keep this post short. Not sure if it will be actually Listed on NASDAQ and when, and it has not really solved the monetization question yet, but you have to agree, Weibo is changing Chinese daily life.

Gaopeng Cuts More than 400 Jobs in China

China is like a jungle when doing business. It is filled with hundreds if not thousands of fierce competitors, fighting in an unpredictable and shady environment where rules elsewhere simply don’t apply. Before Gaopeng (Groupon China) even came to China, experienced market observers wrote them off and tossed them into the ‘savagely beaten foreign company’ bucket, with the likes of Google, Yahoo and Ebay. Beijing Morning Post, reported that last week Gaopeng has just culled 400 employees around China; is Gaopeng the next victim?

Touted as the golden start-up of America in 2010, Groupon ignited the ‘group-buying’ phenomenon in China where more than 5,000 clones exist. According to Crunchbase, Groupon has raised monstrous funds totalling US$1.14 billion. A lot of that cash was used to expand internationally through acquisitions and establishing beach head presence in countries like China. Controversially a lot of money was spent on paying foreign managers, mostly ex-management consultants and investment bankers extremely high salaries, when they didn’t even have much knowledge of China of even the Chinese language.

Obviously the strategy was not paying off in China, where Gaopeng was getting killed by Chinese clones like Lashou, Meituan and now Tencent. Only just a few months ago, Andrew Mason, Founder and CEO of Groupon, came to China to shake-up strategy and re-organize his troops. Perhaps these cuts were in the pipeline?

The large scale structural layoffs resulted in 13 tier 2 and 3 branch offices such as Qinhuangdao, Yantai, Nanning being completely shut down and 18 tier 1 and 2 branch offices such as Shanghai, Hangzhou and Wuhan were downsized.

Mecox Lane Stock Price Has Dropped 90% Within A Year

Due to the stock market wobbles in the past few weeks, not only the market lost ground, but also brought disaster to some US- listed Chinese companies. Mecox Lane Limited, China’s leading online retailer of apparel and accessories(M18.com), who got listed on NASDAQ for less than a year, has dropped from $17.26 to less than $ 2 now, resulting in Mecox Lane investeors Sina and China Dongxiang Group loss more than 69 million US dollars.

Mecox Lane (NASDAQ:MCOX) went public in the US last November as China’s first B2C stock. At its debut Mecox Lane is trading at $17.50, $6.5 higher than the IPO price.

Train-i

Train-i (or Train eye) is a service that helps users see ads on the walls of crowded trains when their field of vision might be blocked by fellow passengers. I’m not exactly sure how this works. It appears to be a sort of AR application, though I don’t know where they would be pulling ad information from. But the function of letting you see the train map (or how close you are to your stop) seems useful.

What Start-up intern proposed was a solution to connect interns with start-ups. In order to educate potential interns/employees about their start-ups, founders would create a video to explain what they are about. There would be user testimonials as well so that an element of peer-evaluation would come into play when deciding whether a start-up was a good place to work or not.

As for the revenue model, start-ups would be charged an annual fee to get listed on the website.

12 Pitches from Start-up Weekend Tokyo at Mixi

You may remember last May when we covered Start-up Weekend Tokyo, and the many great ideas that sprung forth from the three-day event. This weekend saw 2011’s second Start-up Weekend in Tokyo, this time at Mixi HQ in Shibuya.

QLive, the winner of the previous SWT event, was put to good use as a way to gather and vote up the best questions in real-time to ask those pitching. And there were indeed some great ideas put together over these three days. I dropped by on the final day to catch the final pitches. Here are the groups that presented, as well as the select few that won awards

Nikenme was the winner of the ‘biggest surprise award’ for SWT.

StartZaps

StartZaps is a website that catalogues start-ups, allows you to compare similar services. The group said that StartZaps would be a third-party objective review, and from the looks of the site design, each startup listing would show a number of similar services underneath (much like alternativeto.net). When a user finds a start-up they like, they can ‘zap’ it, thus adding it to their ‘My Zaps’ page.

The mock-up that we saw showed that start-ups could be tagged (e.g. music, business, Tokyo) and you could also view how many times they had been shared on Twitter, or how many times they had been ‘Zapped’ on StartZaps.

MyLive

The MyLive team proposed an interesting concept for the concert industry, with its service measuring demand from fans about which bands they’d like to see. Targeting indie music fans, and people outside of major cities, MyLive would give music lovers a chance to vote for their favorite bands. When an artist emerges as ‘popular,’ then a live event is arranged and tickets are sold using a Groupon style system.

That’s almost a month, so we should do our best to make that time fun. How do you make cooking fun? The Cooking DJ team proposes that we do that with music.

The application will take a recipe for a certain dish and break it up into smaller mini-processes (e.g. boil the water, or sautee the onions). Cooking DJ provides songs that are the same length of time, so that when the song is finished, you know that you can move to the next step. The team mentioned the possibility of product advertising (food products specifically) as a part of the business model.

The team was the winner of the ‘One to watch’ prize as voted by other participants, as well as the overall prize as voted by a panel of judges.

Youku Shares Jumped 13% After Potential Tencent Investment

It’s been a good time for Youku. Coincidentally I visited the Youku office yesterday. Maybe it was my presence that helped Youku’s price rise? Probably not.

Yesterday Youku.com, listed on the NASDAQ as YOKU, got a nice 13% spike in their share price to $27.01, after speculation that they are in talks with Tencent to buy a piece of them. Tencent, the 3rd largest internet company by market cap in the world, is believed to be looking to invest in Youku to manage their online video business.

The net result is that social game companies have been forced to become more creative with development.

Games have become more engaging, and upcoming titles have started to focus on newer genres like finding hidden objects.

Monetization has seen a steady increase among companies with the resources to build the next generation of social games. But small, independent developers have faced more challenges.

Facebook has attempted to resurrect viral channels in fits and starts around passive channels, where some users who played games would see a marketing message that was not controlled by the developer or another user.

These passive channels, called discovery feeds and game requests, are ineffective in increasing viral game adoption. There are two reasons why.
