Y Combinator-backed Prayas Analytics aims to help retailers increase sales

Always be testing.

That’s certainly an important part of running a business, no matter whether it’s a digital company producing hardware or software or if you have a traditional brick-and-mortar store. While there are plenty of tools for the former, testing can be expensive for physical stores to execute. But Prayas Analytics has an offering that might take care of that.

Using existing infrastructure inside a physical store, Prayas Analytics says it’s able to glean enough information to help retailers make more informed decisions on how to increase sales. There’s no installation needed, and all pertinent software can be installed and integrated with the retailer’s existing systems. All the software needs is to tap into the store’s security cameras.

It’s one thing to try to spitball what’s happening in a store, but it’s another to have actual data and insights to educate yourself on why customers leave, how to make your workforce more efficient, ways you can better position merchandise and the overall store environment to increase purchases, and more.

But while gleaning information from security cameras might help make a store more effective, tracking people can be controversial. Company cofounder Pranshu Maheshwari said not to worry: His service doesn’t use any facial recognition or record any identifiable information. What is shared is aggregated data that Prayas Analytics uses to not only help retailers better understand how to keep people in the store, but also what customers are doing while in line to pay.

The problem that Prayas Analytics addresses isn’t new and their technique isn’t exactly revolutionary, but its appeal to retailers is that expensive infrastructure won’t be needed to get the data that they need. Maheshwari says getting started can take a matter of days, not weeks or months. Other user-tracking options for retailers include beacon sensors, surveys, mystery shoppers, and other techniques — Prayas Analytics’ approach seems less invasive to consumers.

The cost of using this service will vary based on the store and takes into account factors like the store size and the type of data needed. Currently, Prayas Analytics has a pilot program going, with customers including some in the Fortune 500 across various verticals (office supplies, department stores, apparel, and fast food, for example). Smaller retailers are also testing out the platform.

The company is backed by Y Combinator and the Dorm Room Fund.

Players like Pickingo will enable reliable and efficient movement of goods from the merchant to the consumer, vice versa and eventually even between consumers,” said Khan, Founder and Partner at Orios Venture Partners.

Orios is a Mumbai-and Bangalore-based venture capital firm focussed on making early-stage investments in consumer Internet and software products. Its senior team has been investing in early-stage companies since 2008 and has led over 35 investments at seed and Series A stages.

The fund recently announced a new US$150 million fund for startups working in fintech, B2B commerce, used merchandise and affordable products spaces, besides SaaS and B2C commerce.

“During my tenure at ITC, I have spent hours chasing trucks which often did not report on time at the factory. This unreliability and unaccountability had a cascading effect on operations and was a major pain point. Adding to this, there were many trucking services that were desired but even the leading vendors didn’t provide them. Over time, I noted that this big gap had only widened and the only way this could be bridged was through a technology-enabled solution,” said Pushkar Singh, Co-founder and CEO of Letstransport.

So why is there such a disconnect? It turns out the answer is much more human than the size of a company’s data coffers, or the technology stockpiled to analyze it. Big data initiatives fall down at the feet of biases, bad assumptions, and the failure, or fear, of letting the data speak for itself. As insights make their way up the corporate ladder, from the data scientist to the CEO, the truth in analytics is lost along the way. And this leads to a cumulative effect of unintended consequences.

それではどうしてこうした断絶が起きるのか？その答えは企業のデータ量やそれを分析するのに蓄積されているテクノロジーの問題というよりはすぐれて人間的な要素が関係していることが分かっている。ビッグデータの取り組みは偏見、良くない仮定、エラーや恐れの支配を受けながらデータをして自ら語らせている。得られたインサイトはデータサイエンティストからCEOへと会社の階段を駆け上って行くがアナリティクスの中にある真実は失われていく。そしてこれが累積されて予期せぬ結果をもたらすのだ。

Look at the stock market crash of 2008. A whole host of people made a simple and logical assumption that home prices would only go up. But most analysts didn’t experiment enough with what would happen if prices actually fell. Well, now we know what would happen. It was almost a global calamity. The people investing in the pre-housing crisis bubble were working on an assumption that was very flawed on many levels. And very few people considered, or realized, the risk until it was too late.

Get Past the Culture of Fear of the Truth

Then there is the fear of the truth, with a bit of cognitive bias thrown in. For example, it is very common that sales people, when asked for their forecast, even armed with data on historical performance and current pipeline, are generally not sure if they are going to hit their number. But, typically, they’ll tell the VP of sales they will hit their forecasts – unless, of course, a miss is very apparent. They share the information they’re expected to share, and withhold any acknowledgement that the numbers are malleable.

真実を恐れる文化を克服する

そして、認識バイアスが入り込んできて真実を恐れる事態が起きる。たとえばセールスパーソンが自身の売上見通しを聞かれた際には、たとえそれまでの実績や現状の見込みに関するデータで武装していたとしても目標を達成できるかどうか確信が持てないものだ。しかし、販売部門のVP（バイスプレジデント）には予想を達成できますと言ってしまいがちだ（当然ながら、ミスが大きくなければの話）。彼らは自分がシェアしたいと思っている情報をシェアして、数字には幅があるということを表に出さない。

The problem arises in the aggregate: The VP gets a rosy picture from five sales people on her team, even though they all have serious doubts, so she puts that assumption in and the data rolls up to the CEO, or CFO. In reality, the metric is underpinned by a huge amount of doubt. The truth is buried under the fear of losing one’s job and the cultural expectation that the goal will be met. Failure is not an option. However, while it is likely several of the sales people will manage to hit their number, the chance that they all will is small. This makes the VPs figures even more unrealistic than the initial estimates.

集計をすると問題が発生する。各メンバーは真剣に疑いの気持ちを持っているにもかかわらず、VPはチームの5人のメンバーからバラ色の見通しを受ける。そしてデータはVPにより取りまとめられてCEO、もしくはCFOに報告される。実際のところ、その数字はとてつもない疑いに裏付けられている。真実は仕事を失うかもしれないという恐怖、目標は達成されるという企業文化的な見方の下で打ち消される。失敗は選択肢にない。ただ、何人かのセールスパーソンは何とか目標を達成できるかもしれないが全員が達成する機会はそれほどない。これによりVPは当初の見通しと比べて非現実的な結果をつきつけられる。

So what happens? Everyone is shocked when the company misses its forecast. This is an example of where people sugarcoat a little at the low end, and the cumulative effect leads to the business incorrectly forecasting company-wide results.

それで何が起きるか？その会社は見通しを達成できず誰もが衝撃を受ける。このような事態は、フロントラインのスタッフが上辺を良く見せようとすると累積的な効果によって全社レベルで予測を見誤ってしまうという典型例だ。

Our startup got rid of email, meetings, and managers — and thrived

Our company has just turned eight years old, has a presence in all of Latin America, and currently has 36 members on its team. Our biggest obsession: productivity.

Since 2007 we have analyzed in detail each one of the tasks we carry out with the goal of scaling our earnings exponentially while keeping our number of work hours the same.

As a result, six years ago we eliminated email, three years ago we eliminated meetings, and now we work without project managers and have a four-day work week. Here’s why we implemented these three changes and how we did it:

当社は創業８年の中南米全域で事業を行っている会社で、従業員は現在36名。最もこだわっているのは生産性だ。

2007年以降、同じ労働時間で利益を指数関数的にスケールすることを目指して１つ１つの仕事を詳細にわたって分析してきた。

その結果、当社は６年前に電子メールを、３年前にミーティングを、そして今ではプロジェクトマネージャーを廃止し、週休３日制を採用している。この３つの変化を実践した理由とその方法について以下で説明する。

1. Email

The first thing that came to our attention, years ago, was the negative impact that the use of emails was having on our company. What keeps surprising me, even today, is how the rest of the world still does not recognize that email, which is now over 20 years old, is the least productive tool we can use. We decided to eliminate it completely for all internal communication (and little by little for external communication). The two main disadvantages of email:

数年前に私たちの注意を最も集めたのたのは、電子メールの利用が当社にもたらすマイナスのインパクトだった。今日でさえ、驚くことに20年の歴史がある電子メールは私たちが使っている最も生産性の低いツールであることを他の人はわかっていない。当社では社内の全てのコミュニケーションで（そして少しずつではあるが社外とのコミュニケーションでも）電子メールはすべて廃止することにした。電子メールには以下に述べるように２つの大きな欠点がある。

1. Email encapsulates information. This means that when we exchange comments, suggestions, and inquiries, the rest of the company remains blocked off from knowing about our progress. It is communication behind closed doors. Meanwhile, the ideal is that all the documents are directly accessible at all times to whoever may need them — as are details on the state and degree of development of the project.

1. 電子メールは情報を閉じ込めてしまう。つまり、（特定の人と）コメント、提案、質問をやり取りするときには、社内の他の人に対しては進捗状況について知る機会をブロック（遮断）してしまうことになる。他方、理想的な状況は、いつでも、そして情報を必要としている誰に対しても文書が直接アクセスされる状態である。これは社内プロジェクトの進捗状況・現状の詳細情報についても同様である。

2. Email ends up being a list of personalized tasks for each team member. It is the place where we go every day to see what our next task is. And this develops into an unorganized way to progress, without clear priorities. It certainly doesn’t help us to be correctly synchronized with the rest of our workmates.

How did we solve this?

We developed our own tool for work, specifically designed for our needs but very similar to what Trello currently offers. It is a control panel that we all have access to, where we can see all of the company’s projects as well as know in real time the degree of development on each.

2. 電子メールは結局、各チームメンバー個人の仕事の羅列になってしまう。私たちは次の仕事が何かを毎日みていかなくてはならない。そこでは明確な優先事項がなく、組織化されない状態に向かって進むことになる。間違いなく、他の同僚たちと正確に同期することにならない。

この問題をどのように解決したか？

当社では独自の作業ツール、Trelloが現在提供しているようなもので社内ニーズに合わせて設計されたツールを開発した。これは社内の誰もがアクセスできる一種のコントロールパネルで、各プロジェクトの進捗状況をリアルタイムで確認できるほか、社内プロジェクトの全貌を眺めることができる。

If someone needs to be added to an ongoing project, it is not necessary to resend hundreds of emails (in a totally unorganized way) for them to be able to integrate themselves; they can simply go into the history of the project and see what has been done since the beginning, how it was carried out, and what remains to be done — then they can begin working immediately.

Additionally, today, we’ve given our clients access to our control panel as well, so they can see how we are advancing, without receiving external emails such as: “Any news on the project?”, “How much longer until the next delivery?”, etc.

現在進行中のプロジェクトに誰かを追加する必要がある場合、全員に周知するために何百通もの電子メールを（まったく組織化されていない方法で）再送する必要はない。ただプロジェクトの履歴のところに行き、スタートからこれまでの経緯、実施状況、今後の課題を確認すればよい。そうすれば、すぐに仕事を始められる。

さらに本日、当社のクライアントにもこのコントロールパネルにアクセスできるようにした。だから、「そのプロジェクトに関して何かお知らせはありますか？」、「次の配信までにどれくらいかかりますか？」といった社外メールをやり取りすることなく、顧客企業は当社の進行状況を確認できるようになった。
