In a 2015 Financial Review report, Malaysia’s Treasury, Ministry of Finance, Dr Mohd Irwan Serigar Abdullah said that the government is engaging global consulting firm McKinsey & Company to help attract VCs and investment firms from the US and as well as investment and entrepreneur partnership programmes from Australia.

He also discussed the possibility of making Cyberjaya, a city 20 km from capital city Kuala Lumpur, the tech hub of Southeast Asia that would rival Silicon Valley.

Another government-supported initiative, Malaysian Global Innovation and Creativity Centre (MaGIC) will also see a growth in its scope of goals and functions in the coming years.

MaGIC, which has a government fund of RM50 million (estimated US$11.4 million) and had its headquarters officially opened by US President Barack Obama, wants to be instrumental in enabling its local startups. Through its programmes, it wants to make Malaysia an attractive destination for expatriate tech companies.

And no, there is no sleigh of hand or illusion involved.

CEOs: If your startup is expanding to a new market, you should be there

As a startup CEO and the mother of two children under the age of two, my presence on the tech scene is already fairly irregular, demographically speaking. I recently made an additional unusual step of moving my young family over 7,000 miles across the world to oversee the opening of my company’s new offices in San Francisco.

Opening a new office in a new city, state, or country involves managing an expenditure budget, hiring, making key infrastructure decisions, and many other tasks, sometimes in a foreign language. As CEO, you can hire someone new or send over an existing employee to do the job. But there are some very good reasons to make the move yourself, even if the timing isn’t the best for you personally. Here are four of them:

The sponsorship has to be the right kind. It can’t simply be a top-down dictum. It has to be the kind of sponsorship that is going to allow the team to make some of the critical decisions and find their own way. It has to hold them accountable, but also realize that there are going to be bumps along the way, and even some failures. If you’re not experiencing a few failures, you’re not taking enough risks. Good managers know this.

Ashton Kutcher invests in esports startup Unikrn as it launches a global platform

First, billionaire investor and Shark Tank television celebrity Mark Cuban invested in Unikrn. Now Ashton Kutcher and Guy Oseary are investing in the esports gaming startup through their Sound Ventures investment firm. Unikrn is also launching its global platform today.

Following on a $7 million investment that included Cuban, the deal is another sign that esports is maturing and that entrepreneurs are figuring out ways to make money from the tens of millions of people who regularly watch esports matches for fun. Seattle-based Unikrn has created a website where you can bet on matches with your favorite esports athletes in games such as League of Legends, Counter-Strike Global Offensive, Dota 2, and others.

Rahul Sood founded the company in September with Karl Flores, another gaming entrepreneur. He’s a former Microsoft executive and founder of gaming PC maker Voodoo PC.

The previous investment round was led by Jonathan Teo and Justin Caldbeck of Binary Capital, who are known for early investing in companies such as Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram, Whisper, and Taskrabbit. Besides Cuban, other investors include Advancit Capital, Freelands Group, 500 Startups, Indicator Ventures, and Tabcorp.

To date, Unikrn has raised $10 million in its short life. But the company is moving fast to take advantage of the growth of esports. According to ESPN, 27 million people tuned in to watch the 2014 finals of the League of Legends World Championship. That is more than watched the final game of the World Series (23.5 million) or the NBA Finals (18 million). The global audience on Twitch is more than 100 million monthly active users.

The company launched its Unikrn Arena Global around the world. It’s a virtual arena where users can earn “Unikoins” by participating in various activities and then use the virtual currency to increase their chances of winning prizes. Unikrn is also launching its Unikrn Vault companion app, which will be available soon on Android and iOS.

Unikrn works on either mobile or desktop, and it operates only in jurisdictions where betting on esports is legal.

Sood was recently general manager of Microsoft Ventures, but he quit that job to start Unikrn with Flores, the former CEO of online gaming advertising firm Pinion.

Unikrn is now offering daily “quests” that provide the chance to earn Unikoins, which can be used to win prizes from companies such as: Alienware, Caseking, Funko, Gunnar, HP, HyperX, and Logitech. Types of quests include “Betting Quests,” which reward users for placing bets on Unikrn; “Social Quests,” which reward users for engaging with their friends and/or social networks; and “Trivia Questions,” where users can answer questions about the games being played on Unikrn.

Y Combinator startups have raised $7B with a $65B total valuation; 8 are $1B unicorns

Y Combinator (YC), the Silicon Valley-based startup accelerator and seed fund, has answered a question it says it gets asked a lot: What is the fundraising and valuation status of all startups that have come through its doors?

Launched in 2005 by Paul Graham, Trevor Blackwell, Jessica Livingston, and Robert Morris, YC initially ran two programs — one in California, and one in Massachusetts. The latter of these closed in 2009.

Over the past 10 years, YC has funded and helped kickstart 940 startups, including Airbnb, Dropbox, Reddit, Instacart, and Coinbase. Though many startups enter YC for the mentoring, the accelerator also invests $120,000 for 7 percent equity in the companies.

Sam Altman, the Y Combinator president who replaced Paul Graham in 2014, has published some numbers that help demonstrate the role the accelerator has played in giving startups their big break. Though he is probably right when he says that “these are very imperfect indicators of success.”

Though it was not included in the official dataset, Altman did take to Twitter to reveal that almost a third of the 940 companies it has funded have since closed.

Digging into the numbers, YC companies have raised $7 billion to date, with a combined total value of $65 billion. Eight of these companies are valued at more than $1 billion, which transports them into the much-coveted “unicorn” status, while 40 are valued at more than $100 million.

To have eight so-called “unicorns” out of a cohort of 940 is pretty impressive. And if you’re wondering what these companies are, well, you’ll no doubt know most of them:

・Airbnb: The peer-to-peer home rental service is worth $25 billion, after a $1.5 billion raise in June.

・Dropbox: The cloud storage service is worth $10 billion, off the back of a $250 million funding round last year.

・Docker: The enterprise-focused open-source “container” startup raised $95 million in April, valuing the company at $1 billion.

・Machine Zone: The game developer was reportedly valued at $3 billion following a raise last year.

Hotdeal sells a wide range of items such as clothes, home electronics, accessories, toys, health and beauty products, books, and daily necessities. It also sells vouchers for restaurants, spas, travel tours, and other services.

The Vietnamese startup is the latest ecommerce company to join Transcosmos’ portfolio after Philippine daily deals site Metrodeal, Thai ebook firm Ookbee, Singapore cosmetics ecommerce shop Luxola, and Indonesian fashion ecommerce business Berrybenka.
