New Ideas in Lighting Get Closer to Market

WOBURN, Mass. — Ever since government regulations began phasing out the traditional light bulb in 2012, the once-simple visit to the lighting aisle has become an exercise in navigating a dizzying array of choices and terminologies, especially for new kinds of compact fluorescents and LEDs.

Now, those choices are about to become even more complicated. Two start-up companies are poised to begin selling bulbs that use entirely different technologies — one borrowed from heavy industry and the other from old-fashioned televisions — but meet the new energy standards.

Whether they can capture customers who remain stubbornly wedded to incandescent light is anybody’s guess.

Facebook’s Internet.org app brings free mobile internet to the Philippines

After rolling out the service in six countries since 2014, Facebook today announced the availability of the Internet.org app for millions of people in the Philippines.

The app provides mobile phone users free access to basic internet services related to education, health, employment, communication, and information and news.

This means Filipinos will now be able to browse Wikipedia for information, read the Inquirer for news updates, check the weather using Accuweather, look for jobs on Jobstreet, chat with friends on Facebook and more – without data charges. However, it’s limited to a bunch of curated sites that Facebook has chosen.

2014年から6か国でこのサービスを始め、フィリピンの多くの人にもInternet.orgアプリを利用できるようにすることを、Facebook社は今日発表した。

このアプリによって携帯電話利用者は教育、健康、雇用、コミュニケーション、情報、ニュースなどに関わる一般的なインターネットサービスを受けることができる。

つまり、フィリピンの人たちもWikipediaから情報収集する、最新ニュースをInquirerで読む、Accuweatherで天気をチェックしたり、Jobstreetのページから仕事探しをする、Facebookで友達と連絡を取り合うといったことが、データ料金量を気にせずできるようになるということだ。しかし、今回Facebook社が選んだのはフィリピン国内の限られたエリアだけである。

Through Internet.org, Facebook wants to bring internet services to two-thirds of the world who are not yet online, and it’s partnering with telcos across the globe to reach this goal. In the Philippines – the seventh country to get the service; the first in Southeast Asia – Facebook signed a deal with Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company’s mobile arm Smart Communications, which has 69 million subscribers.

FacebookはInternet.orgを通して、インターネットが普及していない世界の2/3の国に対してこのサービスを提供したいと考えており、それには世界中の電話会社と提携することが必要となる。このサービスを導入する国としては7か国目で、東南アジアとしては初の導入となるフィリピンで、FacebookはフィリピンのLong Distance Telephone Companyの携帯部門であり6900万人の利用者がいるSmart Communicationsと契約を結んだ。

We are excited to bring the Internet.org app to the Philippines and give people access to internet services and tools that can help create new ideas and opportunities,” says Markku Makelainen, director of global operator partnerships at Facebook.

Apart from the Philippines, Internet.org has launched in Colombia, Ghana, Tanzania, Kenya, India, and Zambia.

Digital inclusion
For its initial phase, the Internet.org app allows Filipinos to get free access to a buffet of 24 websites.

Subscribers can download the app on Google Play Store, or simply text INTERNET to 9999 to access.

Smart says the partnership with Facebook is in line with its own drive for more digital inclusion. Smart has launched a number of promos for this purpose since early 2011. The latest promo offering subscribers 30MB of free mobile internet access per day was unveiled in September 2014.

The Internet and Mobile Marketing Association of the Philippines estimates that only 38 percent of the Philippine population had internet access as of mid-2014.

Smartによれば、インターネットの普及は自社製品とFacebookとの提携によって順調だという。Smartは2011年の早期からこの計画をうたった広告を数多く出してきた。一番最近の広告では、利用者に1日当たり無料で30MB分のインターネット使用量を与える計画を2014年の9月に発表した。

インターネットとフィリピンのMobile Marketing Associationは、2014年の半ば時点で、フィリピンの全人口のたった38パーセントだけがインターネットが利用できる状況だったと推定する。

Judges’ comments

The judging panel consisted of three Japanese VCs: Shinichi Takamiya, partner and CSO at Globis Capital Partners; Jiro Kumakura, partner at Global Brain; and Yasuhiro Seo, the general manager of IMJ Investment Partners. Takamiya and Kumakura are based in Tokyo, while Seo is based in Jakarta.

While they showed some interest in all the firms, they were a bit skeptical of Com3Power’s ability to connect with consumers and of Genestream’s ability to differentiate itself from competing apps. Up Peforma’s big data analytical power and AirCloset’s early traction impressed, but the panel seemed most intrigued by Tamecco and D Free.

彼らは参加した全企業に興味を示したものの、消費者と繋がることを可能にする地域エネルギー社と、競合他社のアプリと自社アプリを差別化するジーンストリーム社の機能については幾分懐疑的だった。Up Performaの優れたデータ分析力とAirClosetの早期好転には感銘を受けたようだが、TameccoとD Freeに最も興味を引き付けられたようだ。

また再発するという脅迫感に縛られているだけかもしれない。作品を作り出す過程で少しずつ自分の命を削っていくような気がする。Viは自分の感情を押し通す事が出来ずに自分自身 に押しつぶされて自殺してしまう。手紙を残し、川に向かい、彼女自身の最後を迎える。執筆の際、誰かの死は別の誰かの死を引き立てると彼女は考える。 それが事実だと卑屈にも自分で体験する事になる。自分に縛られ、葛藤した彼女の心境は理解できるが、死という取り返しのつかない究極の選択を取った彼女の行動を私は理解できない。

She might be bounded to fear of a possibility of relapse. She feels like she is breaking her back little by little on the process of producing her works. Vi could not push her feeling thorough, thus she kills herself due to a pressure of her own. She left a letter and went ahead a river where she is dying. During her writing, she thinks that one's death highlight other's. She creepily experiences it by a self-murder. Although I could understand her feeling wrestling with her anxiety, her ultimate choice to die is not understandable.

1. Twisting Helicoid makes squeaky sound. It does not affect on its function or filming.
2. It is good to know the product arrived safely. Does it work properly?
3. "2CR5n" batteries have a bad connection and turn off power, however, attaching a battery grip will solve this problem.
4. It gives you a clear view without mold or fog.
5. In a good condition without dust.
6. A finder is a bit tarnished. It does not affect on filming.
