Alibaba Launches “Drug Safety Plan” , Allowing for Checking Drug Authenticity by Scanning Barcodes

Whilst most of us are still trying to make some sense out of Alibaba’s acquisition of a controlling stake in CITIC 21cn, a loss-making pharmaceutical data company, for US$171.23 million earlier this year, Alibaba has announced that it has successfully integrated CITIC 21cn’s digital database of drugs into its e-commerce platform and cloud computing system, and is preparing the launch its “Drug Safety Plan”.

今年これまでに1億7千123万米ドルの赤字を出している医薬品データ会社CITIC 21cnの株式の獲得に関して真偽が探られていたAlibabaが、CITIC 21 cnのイーコマースのプラットフォームやクラウドコンピューティングイステム内の医薬品のデジタルデータベースの統合に成功し、“Drug Safety Plan”の立ち上げに向けて準備を進めていることを発表した。

Counterfeit or substandard drugs have been a long existing issue for China, according to a Baker & McKenzie report, China is the largest producer of counterfeit medication in the world. Under the proposed plan, users can use Alipay and Mobile Taobao to scan the barcode and electronic registration code on the packaging of any existing drug on the market, in order to retrieve information about its authenticity, prohibition, production and distribution.

Baker & McKenzie の報告によると中国は世界の中でも多くの偽造医薬品を製造しており、偽造品や基準を満たしていない医薬品の流通は長期に渡る中国の課題であった。現在の計画では、薬の信頼性、違法性、製造情報、流通情報などの情報を得るために、AlipayやTaobaoを使用して、市場に出回る薬の包装に記載されたバーコードや電子登録コードを読み取ることができる。

Obviously, such apps wouldn’t function well without the database of CITIC 21cn, whose business is mainly to provide electronic registration information to third parties including government agencies, manufacturers, pharmaceutical companies and consumers. CITIC 21cn’s platform has been widely accepted and applied throughout the nation, covering drugs, food and beverages, agriculture products and home appliances.

It is expected that the app will have functions like “Fake Drugs Detection”, “Expiration Alerts”, “Personal Drugs Management” , “Pills alert” and “Online Consultation”, allowing users to have a more well rounded platform to meet their needs.

Drug barcodes are used for the classification of drug type, effects, side effects and reviews. Electronic registration codes are analogous to drug identification cards, telling you when it was manufactured, where it is distributed and when it expires.

Alibaba is expecting to obtain necessary regulatory support in order to promote full coverage of all the drug barcodes and electronic registration codes in its database.

このアプリケーションは、「偽造医薬品の発見」、「医薬品の使用期限のお知らせ」、「個人の医薬品使用の管理」、「薬の服用時間のお知らせ」、「オンラインでの専門家との相談」のような機能を持つことが期待され、人々のニーズに合った、よりバランスのとれたプラットフォームの提供を可能にするだろう。

医薬品のバーコードは薬の種類、効果、副作用、レビューの分類に使用される。電子登録コードは薬の証明カードに似ていて、いつ製造されたか、どのように流通しているか、いつ期限が切れるかを教えてくれる。

Alibabaは、データベース内の全ての医薬品のバーコードや電子登録コードを完全に使用できるように、必要な行政の支援を得ることを期待している。

Yello Mobile acquires Indonesian price comparison site PriceArea

Today, Indonesian price comparison PriceArea 1 site confirmed that it has been acquired by Seoul-based Yello Mobile for an undisclosed sum. The announcement comes after a wave of rumors surrounding a potential purchase of the startup.

Korea-based Yello Mobile will take a majority stake in PriceArea. A source familiar with the deal tells Tech in Asia that the acquisition sum is at seven-figures in US dollars, but PriceArea and its investors GREE Ventures and East Ventures declined to confirm or reveal the exact figure when asked.

韓国のYello MobileはPriceAreaの株式の過半数を取得する。取引に詳しい情報筋がTech in Asiaに語ったことによると、 買収価格はアメリカドルで７桁になるという。しかし取材時には、PriceAreaとPriceAreaに投資しているベンチャー企業のGREEやEast Venturesは正確な数字を発表することを避けた。

Yello Mobile describes itself as a mobile media company with over 20 mobile and internet services throughout Asia Pacific. Founded in 2012 by Sang-Hyuk Lee, an ex-Daum executive, the company claims to have over 10 million monthly active users across its many apps and services. The acquisition of PriceArea catapults Yello Mobile into Indonesia and potentially Southeast Asia.

“Yello Mobile sees great potential in PriceArea in terms of its user base and business model. This marks the first step in our expansion into Southeast Asia, which reflects our strategic priorities to accelerate growth and diversify our activities through mergers and acquisitions of startups across countries in the region,” says Hugo Choi, chief international operations at Yello Mobile in a statement.

PriceArea has over 1.4 million monthly visits and just started generating revenue this year, but it remains unprofitable. Last year, the site received over 12 million visits. When asked about PriceArea’s future, founder and CEO Andry Suhaili says that it will focus on mobile and regional. “Through mobile, PriceArea can fully leverage its services and [generate] revenues,” says Suhaili.

Suhaili studied computer science and computer animation from The Art Institute of California, Los Angeles. He released the beta version of PriceArea in July 2010. In a 2011 interview, Suhaili told us that PriceArea is the “first price and product comparison website in Indonesia.” Prior to founding the startup, Suhaili ran his own advertising firm for seven years.

PriceArea claims to be the largest price comparison site in Indonesia based on web traffic. Its biggest competitors in the country include Telunjuk and also Rocket Internet’s PricePanda. Other up-and-coming price comparison sites include Kakaku’s PricePrice and Thailand headquartered Priceza which recently expanded to Indonesia.
