Vanada adds that CyberAgent Ventures will be looking into several different new verticals. Some of them include edtech, real estate, car listings, fintech, as well as startups that can be classified as “mobile first” or “mobile only.”

“If they have a proven model and the team is good, then we can also focus on seed,” Vanada tells Tech in Asia. “We are very bullish, especially on Indonesia. In the next few years, I think we will see a tipping point. […] For us, we want to be able to produce the next unicorn from Southeast Asia. […] We want to support the ecosystem as far as we can, and we want founders not to worry about the funding, but just focus on the product.”

CyberAgent Ventures is one of the early investors in Tokopedia, one of Indonesia’s local consumer-to-consumer ecommerce firms that could be worth US$1 billion today. Until recently, Vanada and Suzuki just worked out of Tokopedia’s office. Vanada says CyberAgent Ventures has not yet sold any of its shares in Tokopedia, as it still believes the firm can continue growing.

That said, Vanada says CyberAgent will start to focus on other verticals outside ecommerce. “More than 50 percent of the new fund will go toward Indonesia,” explains Vanada. “It doesn’t only have to be in consumer business or ecommerce. […] We’re keeping our eyes on other sectors too.”

Quantum computing is about to make big trouble for cybersecurity

“Spooky action at a distance” is how Albert Einstein described one of the key principles of quantum mechanics: entanglement.

Entanglement occurs when two particles become related such that they can coordinate their properties instantly even across a galaxy. Think of wormholes in space or Star Trek transporters that beam atoms to distant locations. Quantum mechanics posits other spooky things too: particles with a mysterious property called superposition, which allows them to have a value of one and zero at the same time; and particles’ ability to tunnel through barriers as if they were walking through a wall.

With that in mind, Chirp for iOS has been given a notable update today. It now lets users chirp videos too, having previously been restricted to images, notes, and URLs. Based on our tests, “video chirps” work flawlessly, and given the rise of mobile video, this upgrade could prove a valuable link in Chirp’s chain.

Other developments

Next week also heralds a milestone moment for Chirp, as the company shakes off its mobile roots and launches a Chrome plugin that will take its technology onto Macs and PCs via the browser. This will let users chirp webpages to their phones, an easy way of grabbing map URLs, phone numbers, or other information.

For now, Chirp can still be filed under “potential,” which is perhaps a little disappointing given that the first Chirp app launched three years ago now. Indeed, it’s still very limited in terms of what files you’re able to transfer between devices on mobile, though other common file types will be supported when the web-based version of the service comes to fruition.

Also, there is currently no way to download a file — offline access is enabled through caches within the Chirp app, but what’s really needed is full, peer-to-peer transfers that lets anyone download a file or document. We’re told that this is in the works, though no timescale was given.

Hong Kong's Nest partners with DBS Bank in new fin-tech accelerator

The accelerator will be housed in a ‘newly-renovated 5,000-sq-ft workspace in the heart of Wan Chai’, with applications open until July 1

Hong Kong is trying its darndest to be taken seriously as a hub for fin-tech startups in the region, with increasing efforts from both government and the private sector in this drive.

The city’s financial secretary John Tsang Chun-wah, for example, laid out in his 2015 budget speech plans to inject around US$650 million into the Innovation and Technology Fund. Meanwhile, new accelerators and co-working spaces continue sprouting across the city.

Connected car device aims to help drivers avoid becoming a statistic

Buy an expensive ride these days, and it’s no doubt packed with an array of sensors, screens, cameras, and other built-in technology. But if you’re still driving an old beater or you’ve recently bought something basic, a new gadget may help you join the world of connected cars.

Known as CarVi, the round, black device mounts on a vehicle’s windshield, communicating with the driver’s smart phone. As he or she speeds down the road or highway, the CarVi app constantly analyzes video captured by the device, looking for signs of danger.
