The idea of a plastic-backed iPhone does jibe with recent rumors regarding Apple's plans to address the low-cost smartphone market. Apple, along with Samsung, captures the lion's share of profit in the smartphone sector, but Apple's iPhones are premium products with a corresponding price. A plastic iPhone, it is thought, would help Apple address the low end of the market and grow its share even further.

Observers disagree on what shape a low-cost iPhone might take. Consensus seems to have settled around a polycarbonate chassis, but some reports have Apple putting a non-Retina display in the device, while others have the company keeping the same display that's seen in the iPhone 5.

Weixin To Release The Mobile Payment Service

Staff from Weixin’s R&D team revealed to local portal Sohu that the popular chatting app will soon launch its mobile payment service. Accordingly the function will be realized in the form of a “payment card” on Weixin’s platform, and be connected to Tencent’s online payment service Tenpay.

This payment card would be a second card service Weixin ever offered after the membership card released by Tencent’s loyalty business. Actually behind the scenes of Weixin’s O2O products there stands the lifestyle e-commerce division of Tencent who takes all of these in good care.

Apart from the two “cards”, this team has also been running the official account called WeiLife Membership Card. Data from the company said that over 61884 rooms from chain-hotel Hanting were booked by users of Weixin membership card. Furthermore, the daily booked rooms by this user group added up to 638, bringing the hotel almost RMB 178,000 per day.

Since the partnership between Weixin and Tenpay was announced last September, this to-be-launched mobile payment function has long been expected by many. The new service together with the membership card, Tencent news and game center implies a further reach from the traditional businesses to the mobile. In a conference call from last week, president Martin Lau confirmed that a mobile game platform is also to be offered soon. The first batch will be three free SPG games, developed by the Interactive Entertainment Group of Tencent.

All of them were launched in 2012 and have the same business model: tips – Chinese are not used to tipping at all though. Minor differences include some share income with drivers while some charge them.

Which brings us to LoveByte, Singapore’s very own attempt at making a couple chat app. Relatively late to the game, team has managed to gain early traction despite being waved off by investors, and it recently surpassed 100,000 downloads, out of which 37 percent are active monthly and another 25 percent are using the app weekly.

These figures are encouraging, but also indicative of the long road LoveByte has in front of it. Compared to Between, it has a lower conversion rate from downloads to monthly active users (the Korean app stands at 60 percent).

In terms of messages sent, Between is processing a hefty 14M messages and 200,000 photos a day, way ahead of Couple’s 1.25M and LoveByte, which has 3M messages since it launched in July 2012.

But despite being an underdog, I believe LoveByte do have some upsides. At this stage of the game, absolute numbers don’t mean as much as the ability to innovate on business model and features. LoveByte has an opportunity to work on user retention by making itself more useful and relevant to users. With a small investment from Crystal Horse Investments and Ruvento Ventures, it has a few months to experiment and raise another round.

The company has already begun to do this by trying out a Gifts feature, which allows partners to browse gifts in-app and purchase it off the mobile web browser. This could be a step in the right direction — although it’ll have to work on improving the implementation (by keeping the entire purchasing process on the app, for example).

There are many partners that LoveByte could potentially work with that cut across verticals. Between had a try-out with subscription commerce company Memebox, and LoveByte could certainly explore a partnership with VanityTrove or Bellabox. The startup could even work with travel, flight and accommodation partners, or enter the events and wedding services verticals.

Unlike many startups, which usually have no problems securing business partnerships but are stumped by user acquisition, LoveByte does have good initial traffic. It’ll just need to grow its userbase and capitalize on it.

従って、LoveByteや同様なアプリが進む方向は単なるチャットアプリからカップルが2人の関係を強めるための便利なワンストップサービスアプリへと進化することのように思われる。

通常スタートアップの多くは、ビジネスパートナーを得ることができてもユーザー獲得に苦労するが、それと異なりLoveByteは初期の段階で多くのトラフィックを集めている。あとはユーザー数を増やしそれをうまく利用すればよいだけだ。

Even if it hits a plateau, it still stands a chance of being acquired by the likes of Between and Couple (if they succeed), or the various mobile chat apps in the region. So it’s definitely not a zero-sum game.

Whatever the future holds for the company, what we do know is that the team, led by Steve Sng, Amelia Chen and Ang Hee, has displayed a propensity for innovative thinking and a can-do spirit that’s hard to quantify.

I’m excited to see what’s next from them.

Startup Academy is a hacker school that teaches you how to design and code

Hacker School is not an unfamiliar concept among startup communities. In Singapore, Golden Gate Ventures’ Jeffrey Paine has just announced a hacker school aimed at helping entrepreneurs learn how to code: Startup Academy.

Startup Academy is a community-powered project that aims to help educate the Singapore startup ecosystem about the basics of front end, web and mobile application programming so that business founders are equipped with the knowledge to navigate the world of tech startups.

Startup Academyはデザインやプログラミングを教えるハッカースクールだ

ハッカースクールというコンセプトはスタートアップコミュニティではよく知られている。シンガポールではGolden Gate VenturesのJeffrey Paine氏が起業家にプログラミングを教えるのを目的としたハッカースクールStartup Academyを開校したと発表したところだ。

Startup Academyはコミュニティにより運営されているプロジェクトでシンガポールのスタートアップエコシステムのためにフロントエンド、ウェブ、モバイルアプリケーションのプログラミングの基礎を教え事業の創設者がテクノロジースタートアップの世界でかじ取りをするための知識を身につけさせることを目的にしている。

It is offering three introductory courses: iOS development, Ruby on Rails, and HTML/CSS. Each courses will last 4 to 8 weeks, and are priced between S$300 (US$240) to S$500 (US$400). These courses use Action.IO‘s development environment so students won’t need to install additional software.

Some of the folks that are also involved in Startup Academy include Subhransu Behara from SAP, Joyce Huang from Microsoft, Jaryl Sim from Tinkerbox Studios, and Adrian Chua from DevZero Consultancy.

We are increasingly seeing more and more development classes being offered and powered by the community in Singapore, which is a great thing. On top of Startup Academy, Learnemy has also been offering their platform for developers who are keen to teach others. There are also a few other development classes being conducted from time to time at local hacker community space Hackerspace.SG.

The mobile app provides its users with a list of six hand-picked hotels with the best offers, based on geo localization and divided into three categories (prime, design and comfy). Thus, the users will be able to book a hotel room for that same night effectively and quickly, in just three steps.

With a wide range of hotel booking applications out there, how does Hotel Quickly stand out? The team shared with e27 that Hotel Quickly allows users to benefit from last minute hotel deals from a curated list of hotels. Hotel Quickly also allows their partner hotels to update their last-minute offerings in real time, allowing them to efficiently manage their daily inventories.

When asked about the price points, CEO Tomas shared with us that their prices could be as low as 70 percent off the normal rates.

HotelQuickly now has a network of over 100 hotels in six different countries. The company has also managed to raised US$500,000 from various investors in Asia, Europe and the U.S., and is in the midst of closing its A round funding.

Another interesting fact about HotelQuickly is that both Christian and Raphael were previously working at Rocket Internet Asia companies. Christian is the former COO of FoodPanda, while Raphael was the Managing Director of FoodPanda Vietnam and DropGifts Singapore.

Last month, we reported that Danny Tan, the former senior product manager for Rocket Internet Southeast Asia has teamed up with Kevin Vo, the head of Software Development for Zalora Singapore (a Rocket Internet Asia portfolio company) to launch their new startup. Last year, we also saw Susie Sugden, Managing Director of Lazada resign two months after its operation. The resignation followed closely after Zalora Indonesia CEO Nadiem Makarim stepped down.

It seems like senior executives of Rocket Internet Asia companies are leaving for the next big thing.
