How fast is smartphone penetration in Australia growing? Research firm Frost & Sullivan recently released a new Mobile Device Usage Trends report which shows 68 percent of 15 to 65-year-olds now have smartphones, with penetration among the whole population at 41 percent. With a population of almost 23 million, that would mean that there are more than 9 million smartphone owners in Australia now. Frost & Sullivan also anticipates the penetration to increase to 65 percent by 2017.

MasterPass is an upgrade from its PayPass Wallet Services. Panel moderator Gwendolyn had published a statistic that refers to Asia as 32 percent of global e-commerce sales, but those numbers are highly skewed by China and mature e-commerce markets like South Korea, Japan, and Australia. In many ways, yes, Asia represents a juggernaut for e-commerce markets. According to Emarketer “this year, e-commerce sales will grow 18.3 percent to US$1.298 trillion worldwide as Asia-Pacific surpasses North America to become the world’s No. 1 market for B2C e-commerce sales.”

How do the default files get populated? I'm not familiar with that process yet. Should this really be a sorting of the locales within Spree::Core itself? Then run one of the spree_i18n rake tasks to update the default file? Would just like to avoid people doing work on the default files in this repo if it would just get overridden by one of the locale rake tasks.

Yea it looks like there is a rake task that does the updating of the default files. Could you do the sorting within Spree itself first, and then just run this task to update spree_i18n after?

Gimmie Funding! Singapore-based Loyalty Service Raises $520,000 for Asia Expansion

Singapore-based loyalty service provider Gimmie has announced that it has received S$639,000 (about US$520,000) from various investors, led by WaveMaker Labs in partnership with the Singapore National Research Foundation. This round of funding will be used to help Gimmie expand to other regions in Asia.

Gimmie’s CEO David Ng explained in the announcement that the company’s first area of expansion will be Indonesia. Helping them make a push in that country will be Jakarta’s Ideosource, which also participated in this funding round.

British Retailer Marks and Spencer Launches Major E-Commerce Push in China

Marks and Spencer (LON:MKS) might have 12 brick-and-mortar stores in five Chinese cities already, but it’s surprisingly only this week that the UK retailer is sorting out its e-commerce strategy in the country. The fashion-oriented chain has just launched a Chinese version of its homepage along with a virtual store-front on Tmall, the nation’s largest online mall.

Realistically, it’s the Marks and Spencer Tmall store (see it here) that’s far more important and will see much more traffic. Alibaba-owned Tmall dominates the B2C e-tailing sector in China, and is home to store-fronts from lots of global and Chinese brands. This e-commerce effort also opens up the whole of China to the British company, as most of its physical stores are centered on the usual eastern China hub around Shanghai.

The China roll-outs are part of a broader e-commerce push by M&S into 10 international markets.
