During 1920s to 1930, people in the rural area had higher rate of bathrooms inside than people in the urban area, but the frequency of bathing was not different so much. In the urban area, the ratio of rented house was high, the houses with bathrooms were few and the public bathes were prevalent because of the stable fee. In the farm area, faggots, withered branches, and waste wood were used as fuel for baths, and in the city area, coke, gas, briquette were used, though coal replaced them from the mid Meiji era.

Before Meiji era, the pine roots, Japanese lanterns and candles were used for room lights. The rich people used plant oil for the fuel for lanterns, and ordinary people used fish oil and whale oil which generates odor and smoke.
