WeChat Releasing 5.1 Version, Integrates Other Tencent Apps

WeChat debuted a new Chinese version, 5.1, on MyApp, Tencent’s Android app market last night.

New features and changes include,

- Recharging mobile phone accounts for contacts, through WeChat Payment of course. A greeting e-card will be sent to the recipient after anyone does so.

- Reviving crashed planes in the first WeChat game, one of the hottest in the past summer in China. It’s a 6 yuan (less than $1) charge for three chances of revivals.

1/2 The rain check app,is NOAH's answer to the comment that the current NOAH app is difficult to operate. It is a progressive learning app.

New smart wi-fi router with a touchscreen makes home wi-fi set up a lot less painful

Wi-fi routers are the worst. They’re all still configured by hidden away and arcane set-up pages, and the whole process of making wi-fi for your home hasn’t improved for decades. A new router with a touchscreen is aiming to change all that. The smart wi-fi router is made by GEAK, the same Chinese squad that makes Android-based smartphones and the smartwatch that I reviewed earlier this week.

The GEAK Router was unveiled today – hat-tip to Technode for spotting it – but no price or shipping date has been set yet. The company has said that the smart router, which features a touchscreen to make set-up a hell of a lot easier – will be cheaper than the upcoming model from rival Xiaomi. But that has no price set either.

GEAK’s router supports the new 802.11ac frequency as well as older frequencies, and comes with a 2TB hard-drive to serve as a home entertainment hub. Xiaomi’s router does the same two things.

Singapore dining app Picky launches interactive local food guide

Craving for dishes like Bak Chor Mee or Rojak? I know I am. Singapore dining app Picky recently launched an interactive online food guide, Famous Eats, which features what it claims to be the best of local hawker delights.

With 24 local dishes and 200 hawker stalls featured in the first edition of Famous Eats, the Picky team notes that more categories and stalls will be added in the future.

The list was put together after a careful curation of data generated from data and reviews from major social networks and Picky’s user generated content. At the moment, Picky states that it has over 10,000 restaurants in its database.

Lee Ken Ming, CEO of Picky and creator of Famous Eats said, “With Famous Eats, we documented the best local food in Singapore on an interactive map, helping locals and tourists discover the best of local hawker fare in Singapore.”

Alibaba International Platforms to Merge into One Marketplace

Alibaba’s AliExpress, Tmall International and the international division of Taobao, reportedly will merge into one marketplace, targeting individual consumers overseas (via Sina Tech).

Alibaba as an online marketplace, actually, started from international business-to-business (B2B) trades. But it turned out that Taobao, the online customer-to-customer (C2C) marketplace, and then Tmall, the B2C version of Taobao, exploded in domestic market. Five years after it got listed in Hong Kong Stock Exchange, Alibaba’s B2B business delisted in mid-2012.

Hong Kong based Startup Stock Exchange Bigcolors will launch in Mainland China in Q2 2014

Bigcolors is a startup stock exchange which combines equity crowd-funding by a pool of investors with a trading exchange. Bigcolors will help raise a maximum of US$100,000 for a startup idea, and for that, entrepreneurs will give up 20 percent of the company. But they can alternatively just raise US$25,000 or US$50,000 and part with 5 per cent and 10 per cent respectively. When the idea is posted on the platform, it then undergoes a two-week due diligence process by the Bigcolors team. Once approved, the idea is open to funding for eight weeks.
