短刀(お守り刀)とは、長さ一尺(約30.3cm)以下の刀の総称で日常具・文具として併用された物、子供や女性の懐剣なども含まれる

これらは、一種のお守り(護符)として邪気や災厄を払うものとして扱われた。

今日でも皇室の儀式中に「賜剣の儀」という、天皇家及び宮家で子が生まれた際に、短刀を天皇から贈る儀式がある

子や孫の健やかな成長を願って、家の安泰を願い代々受け継ぐ家宝として短刀は古代より日本で長らく制作されてきました

Translation

A dagger (a sword amulet) is a generic term of swords less than 1 shaku (approximately 30.3cm) including articles which are also used as daily commodities and stationaries and trusty swords for children and for women.
These swords are treated as kinds of amulets (or charms) to remove negative vibes and disasters.

Even today, there is a ceremony called "Choken no Gui (Ceremony of bestowing a guardian sword)" in the imperial family and some princely houses in which the emperor bestows a guarding sword when a child is born.


Since ancient times, daggers have been produced in Japan as family treasures hoping the healthy growth of children and grandchildren as well as the piece and security of families.
