Experiment Theme:

With our previous experiments, we compared distances and speeds, and we came up with all sorts of uses based on the results.
However, when considering the environment this thing will be used in, there is one question that is unavoidable.
We've decided to do our experiment based on the question, "can the EM waves of the iBeacon go through people and buildings?" and test the iBeacon's permeability.

Experiment summary:
We will place a whole bunch of obstacles made of various materials between the beacon transmitter and the iPhone5S receptor, and see if transmission will be successful.

Obstacles:
We made use of these four obstacles for this experiment:
-Metal (a cabinet, refrigerator, door, elevator)
-Flesh (human)
-Water (bath)
-Sand (sandbox at a park)

Commencing Experiment

1.) Metal (a cabinet, refrigerator, door, elevator)
We first started with a bunch of material around the office that has iron.
First off we used the office desk that was made of steel.

It passed with flying colors.
Second is a family-sized refrigerator.
We got reception without any problems.
We were on a roll.

We wondered how it will do against a robust building door.
The screen changed, indication that it still received the signal.

Next is the elevator door, which is about 15 cm thick.
Oh?
We've waited a little while, but we didn't receive any signal inside the elevator.
So our results is that we're able to receive a signal through metal objects that are no thicker than a building door.

2.) Flesh (human)
Moving on from metal, we decided to test it through flesh.
We went with the flesh that was the most easily available, which was human flesh.

We gathered people in a conference room in order to do our experiment.

We first had TechRed hold the beacon to her abdomen and face the wall. We got easily got a signal.

Now we tried increasing the thickness of the "flesh wall". That heavy wall managed to block that signal. It was understood that the signal can get through one person, but not two people.

3.) Water (bath)
Our third experiment is through water. We thought about doing this experiment at a river, but we decided to try it with a bathroom we have on hand.

We put the beacon into a Ziplock bag and gave it a bath.
We put it at the side of a prefab bath that was filling with water, and we continuously checked to see if we were getting a signal.
The water was still shallow, so we were unprepared for the results, but we quickly lost the signal. So we slowly drained excess water until we hit a depth where we're able to get a signal. The screen changed at a depth of about 10 cm.

4.) Sand (sandbox at a park)
Last but not least, we buried the beacon in a sandbox at the park and conducted our experiment.

We came to the park in early afternoon. TechOrange silently dug a hole in the sandbox. He did this without minding the various stares he received.

After digging a hole that was about 40 cm deep, we saw the bottom of the sandbox and we stopped. We dropped the beacon that was wrapped in saran wrap.

We watched the reception of the signal as we slowly filled the hole with sand.

10 cm—check! 20 cm—check!! 30 cm—check!!! 40 cm... we kept getting a strong signal as we put in more sand.

We were able to get a signal through 60 cm of sand.

・砂:60cmまでOK(もっといけるかも)

However, in order to serve the sand hill more than this, the equipment, only the shovel, was not enough... also, the public eye was a concern...
So, study of the sandbox was concluded with the result such as "The sand was able to notice up to 60cm."

Survey results

"IBeacon can be noticed getting through the following obstacles"
Iron: OK with the door of the building (about 10cm)
Meat: OK until one human being
Water: OK up to about 10cm depth of water
Sand: OK up to 60cm (possible to go more)

With these results, I want to conclude the results of this study.
