放射線がたくさん照射されるのが、がん組織やその周囲のわずかな正常組織であるため、がんを治す確率が高く、しかも副作用が少なくできる治療法です。一般的には小さながんに効果が高い治療法です。外部照射と組み合わせて使われることもあります。放射線源の強さにより、24時間から7~8日にわたって治療する場合と、数分の治療を数回繰り返す場合があります。長時間治療する方法を時間あたりの線量が低いので低線量率といい、短時間治療する方法は高線量率といいます。

低線量率で長時間治療している間は、他の人に放射線があたらないように特別の部屋に入っている必要があります。
高線量率の場合は治療するのは治療室内ですが、数分で1回の治療が終わりますので、それ以外は一般病室で過ごすことができます。高線量率治療では放射線源が強いので、医師、技師、看護師が放射線に被曝しないように、あらかじめ患部にチューブを入れておき、遠隔操作で線源を挿入します(高線量率遠隔小線源治療)。
