郵便物の損害賠償の請求は郵便物の差出人もしくは受取人が行うことができます。ただし内容品の一部が盗取され又は一部が亡失して受取人に配達された場合又は損傷した郵便物が受取人に配達された場合は受取人において、郵便物を現状のまま保存し、現地の郵便局へ内容品の不足、破損等の申し出をしていただく必要があります。郵便物の未着、盗取、一部亡失、損傷のいずれの場合も調査請求もしくは追跡請求を先にご提出いただき、調査の結果を受けて損害賠償が適当であることが決定されれば損害賠償の手続をいたします。
