A commercial bank will ask at the start of its loan whether the borrower has collateral to repay it. then it will forget about that borrower completely. Only if the loan is not repaid will it concern itself again with the borrower. Grameen keeps regular checks through weekly and monthly visits at the borrower's house to make certain that her economic health is good and that she can repay the loan, and that the whole family is benefiting. Conventional banks have built their credit institution on the base of distrust. But for Grameen 'credit' means 'trust'. We went back to the basics of the borrower/lender relationaship and built an institution based on mutual trust.

We have no legal instrument between the lender and the borrower in Grameen. All the millions of dollars that we give out as loans every day have no legal cover. The borrowers of commercial banks are all living well above the poverty line. Our borrowers are all initially below the poverty line. We would like our borrowers to rise above the poverty line. Grameen has decided that, in our own national context at least, rising above the poverty line in rural Bangladesh means meeting the following criteria. We at Grameen Spend a lot of our own time making certain that Grameen borrowers are better off than others with regards to sanitation and quality of life.

Special housing loans have provided sturdy leak-proof homes for 425,000 families; while another 150,000 have built houses with incomes from their Grameen-funded enterprises. At Grameen we are trying to generate not only economic change, but social change as well.
