The Spider's Thread
Ryunosuke Akutagawa

One day, the Buddha (Shakyamuni) was strolling idly by himself along the edge of a pond in paradise. The sacred lotus flowers blooming in the pond were pure white like all jewels, and from the golden pistils and stamens in the center an indescribably wonderful scent continually emanated to the surroundings. It was just becoming morning in paradise.

Before long, the Buddha paused at the edge of the pond, and between the lotus leaves covering the water, he happened to see the state of affairs beneath.

Just beneath this lotus pond of paradise was the bottom of Hell, and passing through the crystal-like water, one could see clearly, as if with a magnifying glass, the scenery of the Sanzu River and Hell's Mountain of Needles. Thereupon, the Buddha's eyes stopped on a single man in the bottom of Hell named Kandata, who was writhing with the other sinners. This man, Kandata, was a great theif who had killed people, burned down houses, and commited various evil deeds. But even so, there was a memory of a single good deed that he had done.

The bottom of Hell is located just under the lotus pond in Heaven. So Budda can clearly see a view of River of Three Crossing and Needle Mountain through clear water like a grass bottom for viewing underwater.
Just then, Budda noticed a man named Kandata is wriglling with other sinners in the bottom of Hell. This man, Kandata was a sinner who comitted murder, set fire to a house, and did various evel deeds. But he did a good deed once in his life.

Since it has been equivalent to the infernal bottom exactly, it becomes thin and the bottom of Hasuike of this paradise devotes water like crystal, and since the scene of Suns's river or the mountain of a needle seems to see a peep show exactly clearly, there is.
Then, the figure in which a man called KANDATA is wriggling together with one person and other sinners stopped at the bottom of the hell at the eye. A man called this KANDATA kills people, or fire lights a house, or although it is the master thief who committed the crime variously, there is memory which still did only one good thing.

At once Kandata lifted his leg and was about kill it underfoot, but he suddenly changed his mind, and said, "No, even though this creature is small, there is no doubt that it has life. It would be pitiable to take such a life recklessly," and saved its life by not killing it after all.

The reason is like this. One day, when Kandata was passing through a deep woods, he saw a small spider was crawling on the ground. Kandata lifted up his foot immediately and tryed to stamp a spider, but he suddenly reconsidered. "No, no. It is so small but a living thing. It is so cruel to take away spider's life thoughtlessly. " And he didn't kill a small spider and saved it.

Looking down the hell, Buddha reminded Kandata had saved a spider. And he thought Kandata was to be saved from the hell in return for the good. Fortunately, a spider in paradise put a beautiful silver thread on the lotus leaf colored jade green. Buddha took the thread and let it down straightly through white lotus flowers to the below.

While watching the state of things in Hell, the Buddha remembered that this man Kandata had saved the spider. And he thought that if it were possible, he would save this man from Hell using just this one good deed Kandata had performed. Fortunately, when the Buddha looked to the side, there was a spider of paradise upon the jade-like leaves of the lotus flowers, and it was spinning a beautiful silver thread. The Buddha took that spider's thread gently in his hand, and lowered it directly between the jewel-like white lotuses into the distant bottom of Hell.

Buddha remembered that I had helped a spider in this KANDATA while looking at a state of the hell. Then, as that reward, since the good thing of only that was done, if it could do, he thought that this man would be rescued from hell.
Fortunately, one spider of the Land of Happiness can write a beautiful silver thread on the leaf of the lotus which did a color such as the jade when he looked at the side. Buddha picked up the thread of the spider quietly and, from the interval of a white lotus such as the ball, took straight it down far to the bottom of the hell in the bottom.
