In 1868, civil war broke out across Japan with the current rulers in opposition to the new government forces. As the Aizu domain was among those opposing the new government forces, Tsuruga Castle found itself under siege. The clan held out against the fierce attack, eventually surrendering after 1 month. As Tsuruga Castle had withstood the attack during this time, it became known as the impregnable castle. Following this, it was demolished in 1874 on government orders. The current Tsuruga Castle building was rebuilt in 1965. In 2011, the black-tiled roof was faithfully restored to the red tiles of the original building. Tsuruga is the only castle in Japan with a red-tiled roof.
