Andreessen Horowitz-Backed TinyCo’s Co-Founder Spivey Leaves
July 11th, 2011
Andreessen Horowitz-backed mobile gaming TinyCo has had a bit of a management shakeup we’ve heard, with one of the co-founders, Ian Spivey, leaving the company.
The other co-founder Suleman Ali remains chief executive and on the board with Marc Andreessen. Spivey did not respond to a request for comment, while a comment from Ali is forthcoming.
Ali, who sold social gaming company Esgut to SGN in 2008, and Spivey originally founded the company as Brooklyn Packet before renaming it TinyCo. They became friends in high school before Ali went onto Microsoft and Spivey went to Macquarie Group.
Five months ago, the startup turned heads in the mobile gaming community when it announced an $18 million round led by Andreessen Horowitz at what we heard was around a $100 million valuation. The company had two early hits: Tiny Chef and Tap Resort Party, which each had accumulated 5 million downloads at the time the funding was announced.
The company has since had two more major launches with Tiny Zoo, another casual resource-management game similar to Pocket Gems’ Tap Zoo, and Tiny Nightclub, which entered a very crowded field with Booyah’s Nightclub City DJ Rivals, TeamLava’s Nightclub Story and Tapulous’ Club World.
Tiny Zoo has been a fairly strong performer, maintaining its rank in the top twenty to thirty highest-grossing iOS apps since its launch in April. The company is said to have a Medieval city builder like Z2Live’s TradeNations in the works as well.
TinyCo also recently launched a $5 million fund to find third-party developers to support and add to their network.
