放射線によってがんを治療する
放射線は、細胞が分裂してふえるときに必要な遺伝子に作用して、細胞がふえないようにしたり、細胞が新しい細胞に置き換わるときに脱落する仕組みを促すことで、がん細胞を消滅させたり、少なくしたりします。放射線治療はこのような作用を利用してがんを治療します。放射線治療に用いられる放射線の種類には、X線、γ（ガンマ）線、電子線などがあります。このほか、研究段階ですが陽子線や重粒子線による治療が一部の施設で行われています。

The benefits of radiation therapy is that the therapeutic effects for cancer can be expected without having to surgically remove the affected areas, thus keeping the organs intact, or keeping the function of the organs the same as before the patient fell ill with cancer. The effects (effectiveness or the degree of healing achieved) can vary significantly depending on the type of the cancer, and the side effects can vary from the position of the treatment area. Applicability of the radiation therapy, and how it should be applied, when applicable, will be examined based on the clinical condition determined by the stage of cancer, patient's condition, and the treatment histories.

The advantage of radiation therapy is that treatment efficacy toward cancer canbe expected without performing ablative surgery, and therefore it is possible to conserve the organ, and maintain the activity of the organ the same level as it was before the development of cancer. The effect of radiation therapy (the ease of effect and recovery ) vary widely between the types of cancer, and adverse effects occur in many ways depending on the site of treatment, and so on. Based on the state of cancer (speculated from state of desease, etc), physical condion, or previous treatment, considerations are made for whether radiation therapy will be applied, and how it will be applied.
