日本の女の子のカバンの中には、たいていハンカチが入っています。汗を拭いたり、トイレの後に洗った手を拭いたり、食事の時に服が汚れないよう膝に置いておくためです。

Japanese women mostly have handkerchiefs in their bags. The purpose is to wipe the sweat, wipe washed hands after using the toilet, and placing it on the knee so that the clothes won't get dirty during mealtime.
