和敬清寂（わけいせいじゃく）とは、茶道の心得を示す標語で、意味は、主人と賓客がお互いの心を和らげて謹み敬い、茶室の備品や茶会の雰囲気を清浄にすることという意である。特に千家ではこの標語を「和」、「敬」、「清」、「寂」を表す「四規」として重要視している。

Wakei Seijaku (harmony, prudence, purity and tranquility) is the slogan of the Japanese tea-ceremony that means the host and the guest harmoniously melt their hearts, respect each other, purify tea-ceremony equipments and the mood of the ceremony. In particular, the House of Sen emphasizes this slogan as the Shiki (Four Principles of Tea) meaning Wa (harmony), Kei (respect), Sei (purity), Jaku (tranquility).
●Wa (harmony)
This characteristic means: being in happy harmony, in very close far beyond "Darby and Joan" relationship, and in Yamato spirit. In particular, Buddhism regards harmony as the most primary element and those who violated it were expelled from religious communities.

“和敬清寂” in Japanese is read as WAKEISEIJYAKU and it is the motto for the savvy of Japanese tea ceremony. The words contain the meaning of “a host and a visitor shall have the discreet and respect with soften heart each other and make the appointments of a tea-ceremony room and tea ceremony being purity atmosphere. Particularly at Senke School, these words of motto are highly emphasized as “Fundamental Four Rules” representing “Harmony”, “Respect” “Purity” and “Tranquility”.

The soul of Japanese representing the harmony of “let each other see to the liver and gallbladder” beyond the cozy and closeness. Especially in the instruction of Buddhism, the harmonization is the first concern and it was happened that a member who messed up this instruction was expelled from a religious organization.

・Sei (Cleanness)
It represents purity and cleanness without any blot. It is believed that Rikyu spread foliages on a cleaned yard of a tea ceremony room shaking a twig deliberately. According to his thought, a bit of fallen leaves even strengthens atmosphere of cleanness.
・Jyaku (Calmness)
It is translated into Seijyaku (Silent calm), Heijyaku (assimilation into desolation), Shizuka (soundless), Sabi (virtue of silence). Jyakumetsu (enlightenment) is the extreme goal in Daijyouzen Buddhism.
