掛け軸（表装）を作る人を表具師（ひょうぐし）または経師（きょうじ）と呼びます。自家製の生麩糊と選りすぐられた和紙で掛け軸を作り上げていくわけです。掛軸を作るにあたって基本的に３段階の裏打ちがあります。裏打ちには和紙を使います。作品への裏打ち（肌裏）には、『美濃紙』を用います。この裏打ち（肌裏）紙には、薄口・中肉・厚口というように作品の厚みに応じて使い分けます。さらにこだわりの表具師になると、同じ薄口にしてもそれを自分の指先で薄い・厚いと感じ取り、それを分けて使います。

The people who make KAKEJIKU - hanging scroll (mounting) are called a HYOUGU-SHI or KYOUJI - a paperhanger. They make KAKEJIKU with raw wheat gluten glue and selected WASHI - Japanese paper. When we make KAKEJIKU, there are 3 processes of backing basically. We use WASHI for backing process. We use MINO WASHI –Mino paper for the direct backing of the KAKEJIKU itself. For this process, we choose thickness of papers –thin, medium, and thick - depend on the thickness of the KAKEJIKU itself. A persistence paperhanger can distinguish the paper thickness by their fingers even those papers seem to be the same thinness, and then choose the most suitable one.

裂地への裏打ち（肌裏）にも作品同様の作業となりますが、作品・裂地にさらに補強のためまたは厚みを合わせるために、『美栖紙』で裏打ちをします。これを増し裏と呼びます。そして様式の形に整えたら全体を『宇陀紙』で裏打ちします。これを総裏と呼びます。ただし、上部には上巻と呼ばれる絹を貼ります。この部分は、巻いた状態のとき手で触る部分になり、和紙だと汚れや毛羽立ちとなるため絹を使用します。
簡単にこれらの和紙の説明をすると、『美濃紙』『美栖紙』は補強のため、『宇陀紙』は湿乾対策のためです。

This process is called So-ura. But we attach silk fabric called Uwamaki on the upper part. これらの和紙は、配合された材料が異なります。
すべての作業を一種類だけの和紙で試した表具師がいたと思います。または二種類で、三種類で。さらに組み合わせを変えて試した表具師もいたと思います。

ところがこの和紙だけだけの問題ではなく、糊の問題も出てきます。それぞれの工程においての糊の濃さと量。こういった試行錯誤の繰り返しによって、日本の掛け軸（表装）が確立されていったものです。この掛け軸には日本の伝統と文化が凝縮されています。
