Currently, the level of research and imitation of Xiaomi’s model by industry peers is as detailed as studying pixels in a picture. In 2015, the smart devices playing field will become extremely competitive, especially as the growth of the smartphone industry in mainland China slows down. As industry players seek to outdo one another, the test of endurance and the robustness of each player’s overall ecosystem will determine which one eventually gets eliminated. Therefore, starting this year, we need to reset our attitude and restart our journey. We should possess the determination to fight this battle to the end, and look towards a bright future for every single one of us at Xiaomi.
1) Go back to basics when it comes to product and service. We have to consistently focus on product innovation, emphasize on making friends with our users, and strive to produce high-quality, high-performance devices with great user experience. On 4th January, we are announcing Redmi 2, and on 15th January, we will be unveiling our next flagship device. There’s no better way to start 2015 than with our newest products.
2) Strategic planning for our ecosystem. Two years ago, we started laying out our plans for an ecosystem, and to date we have made significant progress, investing in more than 20 hardware companies making smart products, and even partnering with appliance giant Midea. We want to cooperate closely with every more partners to create a more holistic ecosystem, and bring a more complete, interesting and convenient smart technology user experience for all Xiaomi fans. We believe that this ecosystem we are building will be Xiaomi’s most important competitive advantage in our rapid growth ahead.
3) Harbour dreams of expanding across the world. We have stepped beyond mainland China to seven other countries and regions, and have achieved success in these places. In India, we sold over 1 million smartphones in five months. This year, we will enter even more overseas markets. The road to success is never smooth-sailing, and it is expected that we will face even more challenges in our globalization. However, we are determined to overcome all challenges to bring our products, proudly designed and made in China, everywhere, as we believe innovation is for everyone.
Xiaomi has come a long way since we started from scratch in April 2010. Innovating through our products and our business model, we have created a miracle. From being a developer of MIUI ROM to a smartphone manufacturer, Xiaomi has now become a national brand in consumer electronics, a front-runner in smart home technology, a provider of mobile Internet content, and a platform for Internet services. We are a company that the technology industry has never seen before.
From now onwards, every step we take is writing a new chapter in the history of the industry. In the year ahead, I hope that everyone at Xiaomi will continue being sincere, passionate, humble, nimble and involved while forging ahead, to explore the possibilities in this industry and to go places that people have never even dreamed of yet!

7. CashCashPinoy controversyThis story stirred up a hornet’s nest. In November, Tech in Asia released an exclusive report about mounting complaints against daily deals site CashCashPinoy over the alleged sale of counterfeit luxury goods. The report also discussed supposed actions taken by financial institutions to suspend transactions originating from the site. CashCashPinoy maintained accusations were “unfounded.” With insights from industry and banking sources, as well as the government, Tech in Asia highlighted in its report how counterfeit goods are endemic in the ecommerce industry. It also helped raise awareness on the need to improve protection of online consumers.
5. PLDT freebieFree internet, anyone? In September, PLDT provided free internet access to prepaid subscribers of its mobile brands Smart, Talk ’N Text, and Sun Cellular. The service was announced in a press conference by no less than PLDT chairman Manuel Pangilinan, who disclosed on his Twitter account days prior that they would be making a “very important” statement. Pangilinan said the free internet for prepaid subscribers for a period of two months was meant to “stimulate internet habit.” Prepaid subscribers account for about 90 percent of the PLDT group’s mobile subscribers.
In October, Pangilinan gave another surprise announcement: the free internet promo was extended till January 2015, and now included postpaid and broadband subscribers.4. SM and Rustan’s Group ecommerce sitesCompetition in the Philippine ecommerce space grew tighter after two retail giants SM and SSI Group, a member of the Rustan’s group of companies, launched their own online platforms in a bid to capture the growing sector of internet shoppers. SM’s online store offers men’s, women’s, and children’s accessories, apparel, bags and shoes, among others.
SSI’s e-store, on the other hand, initially carries 17 high-end brands in its portfolio, namely Marks & Spencer, TWG, Oliviers & Co., Payless Shoe Source, Nine West, Aerosoles, Bass, Superga, Steve Madden, MBT, OkaB, A/X Armani Exchange, Replay, High Sierra, Samsonite, Beauty Bar, and MakeRoom. How their move will affect ecommerce sites is something to closely watch.

Philippines’ first horror game hits Steam GreenlightShortly before Christmas, Philippines-based game development studio Zeenoh Games put its upcoming horror game, Nightfall, up on Steam Greenlight. There was an animated trailer and a single screenshot, and no more. While the game’s Steam Greenlight page is now heavily populated with concept art, event photos, and an additional gameplay trailer, we still don’t know much about Nightfall apart from the fact that it features a female journalist as its main character and that it’ll be a first-person game.
When contacted by Games in Asia, Zeenoh founder and CEO Jhondie Abenaza says that Nightfall will be a first-person survival horror game based in Philippine folklore. He also adds that the initial poor showing of the Greenlight campaign was both his over-excitement about the studio’s first ever Steam Greenlight campaign as well as the team’s inexperience, since it has been a mobile-only studio until now.
There are some obvious parallels between Nightfall and Indonesia’s much hyped DreadOut from Digital Happiness. Abenaza says that the games may seem similar since the Philippines and Indonesia have mythological creatures in common, but that the Nightfall experience will be “entirely different.”“[It’s] because of the mystery of the haunted house, kind [of] like ‘Resident Evil mansion’ but of course dealing with Philippine folklore like the well-known ‘Aswang’ in Hollywood,” he explains. Abenaza adds that there will also be a “tragic love story” that will allow players to discover connections to mythological creatures, as well as some links to historical Filipino events.
Xiaomi sells 1 million smartphones in India in first 5 monthsChinese phone maker Xiaomi revealed today that it has sold one million smartphones in India in the five months since launching in the nation.Xiaomi’s India boss, Manu Jain, disclosed the figure earlier today on Twitter. In dec, we reached a major milestone - 1 mn phones sold in India! Thank u for your love and support.
The milestone means that Xiaomi has matched the progress of Motorola, which also sold one million smartphones in India in the space of its first five months. Motorola’s online-only sales strategy in India, targeting young and ecommerce-savvy customers, paved the way for Xiaomi to do the same thing later in the year. But it’s not all been plain sailing for the Chinese startup in its second-largest market. Earlier this month, a patent dispute with Ericsson led a Delhi High Court judge to issue a ban on Xiaomi sales in India. That was partially lifted a week later, but Xiaomi still hasn’t fully resolved its legal tussle in India.
Consumer-to-consumer marketplace Tokopedia claims to be drawing 10 million monthly visitors with shoppers buying an average of 2 million products per month in 2014. While the site can still be considered to be in the early stages of development, SoftBank and Sequoia Capital recently invested US$100 million in Tokopedia, catapulting the young firm into direct competition with the likes of Lazada Indonesia and Kaskus.
