The Best Books I Read in 2014

I didn’t really plan it this way. But as I look at the list of the best books I read this year, I see how a number of them touch on economics and business. That’s fitting, in a year when Thomas Piketty’s Capital in the Twenty-First Century put a big spotlight on inequality. In addition, with the Asian economies so much in the news, I wanted to read How Asia Works, which promised to explain why some of the continent’s countries grew so fast while others languished. And I got to brush up on an old favorite, the best business book I’ve ever read.

特に計画したわけではないのだが、今年読んで良かった本をみると、多くが経済とビジネスに触れていることに気がついた。それはトマ・ピケが「21世紀の資本」で格差にスポットライトを当てた年にふさわしい。それに加えて、アジア経済が随分ニュースに取り上げられたため、アジア大陸の国々の中でなぜ急成長する国と低迷する国があるのかを解明するとうたっている「アジアはどう機能しているかーHow Asia Works」を読んでみたかったのだ。そして古くからの愛読書、今まで読んだ中で最高のビジネス書も読み直さなければならばい。

Documents show Xiaomi made just $56M in profit in 2013

Xiaomi, the disruptive Chinese phone maker that sold 18.7 million phones in 2013, has revealed inadvertently how much profit and revenue it pulled in last year.

Xiaomi generated RMB 347.48 million (US$56.15 million) in profit in 2013 from RMB 26.58 billion (US$4.3 billion) in revenue. The numbers emerged from documents filed by Xiaomi in relation to its US$200 million stake in Midea, which happened over the weekend. The figures were spotted by Reuters. (UPDATE: A Xiaomi representative points out that, while the filing is accurate, these figures are for Xiaomi Inc and therefore do “not cover the entirety of Xiaomi’s business.”)

Although Xiaomi is outselling Apple’s iPhone in China, its revenues and profits from its home market are small in comparison. Apple made US$27.3 billion in the greater China area (China and Taiwan) in January to December 2013 – six times greater than Xiaomi’s tally in the same period.

But Xiaomi’s financials for 2014 should be stronger with an anticipated 60 million smartphone sales and a broader range of gadgets now for sale, such as the newest offering – a smart air purifier for China’s smoggy cities.

Yu’ebao, a mutual fund launched in June 2013 for Alipay users, is regarded one of the most important developments in China’s financial markets during the last year. It makes purchasing mutual funds far easier than before, as users need only open its page on Alipay and deposit money, without the need to file papers with traditional financial institutions. A mutual fund company in which Alibaba has a majority interest is managing the fund. One year after launch, over 100 million users have purchased RMB 574.1 billion (US$92 billion) worth of Yu’ebao funds, according to Alipay.

In April this year, Zhao Cai Bao, a platform for third-party financial institutions to launch online products like Yu’ebao, from insurance and small loans, for individuals or SMEs, was launched.

Ant Financial is building a credit scoring system leveraging purchasing and user data collected by Alibaba marketplaces, which is expected to help financial institutions including Ant Financial itself make credit decisions.

Ant Financial Services Group received regulatory approval to set up a private bank, named MYbank, this September.

Xiaomi claims the company was valued at over US$300 million this round. That a company with just an imitation wristband has such a high valuation less than half six months after launch is rarely seen. Obviously it has a lot to do with Xiaomi’s backing.

Earlier in October, Lei Jun, co-founder and CEO of Xiaomi, said they planned to duplicate Xiaomi’s business model and develop a hundred more Xiaomis in various hardware sectors. Huami is a typical example.

Experience of the morning prayer service, and a stay right beside Chion-in temple attracted me to book this place.
I'd seen few photos of it and wondered what the facilities were like … , so I arrived a little anxiously. But it was surprisingly luxurious! Even a humidifier was provided, and everything was well taken care of.

It's located very near the bus stop, and it's on the mid-way through the slope after entering in the compound of Chion-in. In front of Sanmon, the main gate.
It's also in Gion area and convenient for sightseeing. The tourist spots like Shōren-in temple and Yasaka shrine are within a walking distance, and I could enjoy a relaxed visit after checking in.

Luxurious atmosphere aplenty! I could see Sanmon, the main gate, from my room.
I had an image of a budget hotel before my arrival, but everywhere was beautiful and the facilities were perfect!
The room was spacious and made me feel like staying for another night. It's a good price for the facilities, and I have no complaint.
