This week I’ve noticed that the indoor pollution level tends to be just under half of what it is outside. So if it’s really bad out there, the air in your home is awful as well. Today, for example, it’s 110 out there (categorized as “unhealthy for sensitive groups”) on a scale that goes up to 500, but inside it’s 47 (“good”). Turning on the Mi Air Purifier quickly brings the PM2.5 level down even further, and it’s below 20 in less than 30 minutes.

The built-in pollution read-out in the Mi Air Purifier responds quickly. Moving the unit to another room causes the number shown in the app to rise as it detects dirtier air.

The gizmo has three speeds, but usually it’s best left to the auto setting. The noise levels on the lower two speeds are fine, about the same as an air-con unit that’s not working too hard. However, the top speed setting is awful. Thankfully, you won’t really need the top speed setting unless the air is hideous, so I don’t think you’ll hear it too often. But listen to it drown out the music in my room when I turn it up from auto to max speed:

Cheaper oxygen

This isn’t a review, so I can’t weigh this up, but the low price and the well-made Smart Home app, which is a hub for all of Xiaomi’s other smart gadgets, makes it an appealing buy for first-time air purifier shoppers. Costing just RMB 899 (about US$150), the Mi Air Purifier is a lot cheaper than models from well-established and well-regarded brands that are now marketing themselves heavily in China, like Blue Air and IQ Air. A few major names also make indoor purifiers, like Samsung and Whirlpool.

The only downside I can think of to the Mi Air Purifier is that you’d need three, four, or even more of these to keep an entire home purified. But that’s the same for those pricier models.

Other Chinese firms are pushing the price down as well. This one from software company Cheetah Mobile is the same price as Xiaomi’s and looks funkier. Or, this sort of homemade contraption does the job for just RMB 200 (US$33).

10 Indonesian startups with impressive growth and funding

While there has been an increased number of startup funding rounds in Indonesia in recent years, the archipelago’s investment scene is mysterious because the majority of funding news features undisclosed amounts of capital. Occasionally, Tech in Asia will get wind of a specific number, but more often we just get clues like “seven-figure amount” or a “significant series A” investment, but not too often. Because of this, quantifying the best-funded startups in Indonesia is nearly impossible – perhaps like trying to bake a cake using a recipe with no measurements.

The term “best-funded” also carries a vague definition, as different startups have different financial needs for stable growth. US$1 million is probably not a sustainable investment to big boys like Lazada Indonesia or Traveloka, but it’s more than enough for smaller firms like Female Daily Network to scale up. With this in mind, we’ve put together a list of Indonesian startups based on a couple checkboxes.

1. BukaLapak

BukaLapak is a consumer-to-consumer ecommerce marketplace that directly competes with the likes of Tokopedia. It’s clear that BukaLapak doesn’t have as much cash as its competitor, but it has seen consistent funding and considerable growth. Back in July 2011, the company – which was born from local digital agency Suitmedia – closed a seed round with a Jakarta incubator called Batavia, which was run by Rebright Partners and local financial firm Corfina Group. Batavia Incubator no longer exists, but BukaLapak sure does. At the time of funding, the site was already receiving more than 9 million monthly pageviews.

In September 2012, BukaLapak got another hit of venture funding when it secured a series A round from Gree Ventures after adding a new payment system that allowed visitors to use Bank Mandiri’s Clickpay.

Traveloka is the quietest company in Indonesia that is also a potential unicorn. Founder Ferry Unardi dropped out of Harvard before coming back to Indonesia and starting the ticket booking site in 2012 and received seed funding from East Ventures a couple months into operations.

China just 3D-printed an entire mansion. Here’s what it looks like

A Chinese construction company last weekend unveiled its two largest 3D-printed buildings to date. One is a grand-looking, three-story mansion (well, McMansion), and the other is a more utilitarian five-story apartment block. Both are made entirely by 3D printers creating layers of materials that form walls and roofs.

The giant 3D-printed homes are made by Winsun, the same company that cranked out basic one-story homes last year.

This latest project is a proof-of-concept for now, with both the villa and the apartment block (which are undecorated inside) positioned side-by-side in an expo area, according to photos on Chinese sites such Caixin and Netease News.

The latest 3D-printed homes are in Suzhou in eastern China, where Winsun is based. The partially finished wall section pictured below shows how the firm’s giant 3D printer creates layers of 3D-printed concrete that is later formed into a section of wall. These pre-fabricated elements are then put into place to build the entire structure.

Rocket Internet, PLDT seek to boost ecommerce spending with new epayments venture

Ecommerce giant Rocket Internet and Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT) took a big step towards their goal of becoming a strong contender in online payments in the region.

In a joint statement, the companies announced they’ve inked an agreement to form a 50-50 joint venture for online and mobile payment solutions, with a focus on emerging markets.

This follows PLDT’s US$445 million investment in the Germany-based startup incubator, a transaction that marked the start of a strategic partnership to develop services catering to “unbanked, uncarded, and unconnected” populations.

Manila-based PLDT will throw in the intellectual property and business operations of its mobile-first payment platform Smart e-Money into the joint venture. For its part, Rocket Internet will contribute its “participations” in two payment platforms it helped set up: Paymill and Payleven.

Smart e-Money is a pioneer in mobile banking and ewallets, handling transactions valued at about EUR 3.4 billion (US$4.06 billion) in 2013. Rocket Internet’s epayment services, on the other hand, cater to high growth, small and medium ecommerce businesses across Europe.

The joint venture particularly targets Rocket Internet’s ecommerce operations under brands such as Zalora and Lazada in Southeast Asia. Prior to this deal, the companies had begun making use of PLDT’s MePay. MePay is a payment service for shopping on Zalora’s site without a credit card.

The joint venture agreement is subject to regulatory approval, and will likely close within the first quarter.

South Korea to invest $400M into startups making wearables, drones, and self-driving cars

Under the helm of President Park Geun-hye, the South Korean government has been heavily involved in the local startup scene, and committed KRW 2.17 trillion (US$1.97 billion) last year and KRW 2.25 trillion (US$2.04 billion) in 2013 to startups in their infancy. Today, South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced that another US$400 million will be invested into developing “new and indigenous products and technologies that will help boost the country’s economy and exports,” Yonhap News Agency reports.

2014 saw a growing number of South Korean startups achieving a measure of success, whether it be going public or receiving big investments. It also saw Daum Kakao, the parent company of the popular KakaoTalk app, looking to hedge its bets with an investment firm that has US$90 million in the bank. The upward trend seems likely to continue into the new year, with the government also setting aside a US$181 million budget for early-stage startups in general.

12 Asian indie games to look out for in 2015

Game development has come a long way. No longer just an arena for the big players, it is now accessible to small businesses and even individuals as app platforms and development engines and assets get more accessible.

The quality of games produced in Asia, be it for PC, mobile, or console, has also been rising. I’m cheered by the thought of never again seeing a badly rendered 3D sheep try to pick words out on a screen while jumping across platforms (this game is from Singapore, if you are wondering).

2015 is sprawling out before us and it’s going to see a ton of great games. Here are some you should take note of in the new year.

ゲーム開発は大きく発展してきた。もはや大企業の独壇場ではなく、アプリ開発プラットフォームや開発エンジンを使えば、今や中小企業や個人でもゲーム開発が可能で、そのようなアセットはどんどん利用しやすくなっている。
アジア発ゲームのクオリティも、PC用、モバイル用、ゲーム機用とあるが、どんどん上がってきている。ひどいレンダリングを施された3Dの羊が飛び回りながら画面内の文字を拾う、というのを二度と目にすることはないという期待に喜んだ（ご存じなければ、このゲームはシンガポール発である）。
2015年は我々の前に大の字になって寝そべっており、素晴らしいゲームを山ほど目にするだろう。新年注目すべきものをここに紹介する。
