“We provide tools so people can create and distribute their own animated content,” said Michael Howse, chief operating officer of Nimble Collective in Palo Alto, California, in an interview with VentureBeat. “What we came up with is the ability to distribute rich apps via the cloud on Citrix.”

Nimble Collective is developing what it calls the industry’s first cloud-based, end-to-end platform that will serve an estimated 10 million-person community of professional and aspiring animators.

The company unveiled itself and its service plans at today’s Citrix Synergy 2015 Conference in Orlando, Florida.

Howse was previously chief executive of Bigfoot Networks, which Qualcomm acquired in 2012.

“The animation content market generates $90 billion annually, but is still dominated by studios because they can afford expensive technology and tap large-scale budgets,” said Howse. “However, several key trends are driving change — cloud-enabled application streaming, along with direct-to-consumer video networks democratize content development and distribution that until now would cost individuals and small teams millions of dollars to set up.”

Nimble has an “all cloud” service that provides a full animation workspace, streamed anywhere an artist chooses to do work.

This is the first Bitcoin exchange to be licensed in the U.S.

Today, New York’s Department of Financial Services granted a license to Bitcoin exchange itBit, giving the company the ability to operate broadly in the U.S.

In addition to receiving a charter from the NYDFS, itBit is also announcing a $25 million round of funding, according to the New York Times.

The banking trust charter will give itBit the ability to operate similarly to a bank. However, it may not clear up the confusion surrounding other Bitcoin business, which for the moment operate without guidelines.

“We have sought to move quickly but carefully to put in place rules of the road to protect consumers and provide greater regulatory certainty for virtual currency entrepreneurs. The technology behind Bitcoin and other virtual currencies could ultimately hold real promise and it is critical that we set up appropriate rules of the road to help safeguard customer funds. Indeed, we believe that regulation will ultimately be important to the long-term health and development of the virtual currency industry,” said NYDFS superintendent Ben Lawsky in a prepared statement.

This is the first legally authorized Bitcoin exchange for the U.S. Over the past year, Bitcoin businesses and regulators in New York have been working together to develop a regulatory framework for virtual currency businesses; however, official rules have yet to materialize.

In July of last year, the department drafted up some potential Bitcoin regulations and introduced the concept of Bitlicenses for virtual currency businesses that comply with its mandatory rules. The department was taking comments on the proposal until January.

The license awarded to itBit is not a Bitlicense, but rather a license that is traditionally given to banks, and it comes with very strict guidelines. NYDFS is expected to unveil a set of guidelines for Bitcoin businesses soon, which will potentially clear up much of the legal ambiguity that virtual currency businesses have been forced to operate under in the past.

As an example, just last week, the Federal Department of Treasury slapped virtual currency network Ripple with a $700,000 fine for failing to register its money business and for not instituting anti-money laundering protocols.

China Incubator Suhehui Founder Darren Luo Interview: Building A Startup College for Entrepreneurs

Since their launch in 2012, Shanghai-based incubator SuHeHui incubator has successfully incubated 150 companies and invested in a further 50. It selects about 10 startup teams as part of a competition batch and provides necessary services for startups during a 6-month-long incubation period along with a funding of 200,000RMB (in exchange for 8% share).

At the graduation ceremony and roadshow all teams are presenting ideas to attract further investments. TechNode interviewed Suhehui founder Darren Luo about how it operates and his opinions on China’s tech trends.

Tell us about Suhehui incubator and how can startups apply for it.

Suhe(苏河）is like mother river and hui（汇） means integration. Since the oldest entrepreneur was born in riverside, we wanted to give the meaning that the entrepreneurs are born here again and we gather them here. We aim to pass the spirit of the previous entrepreneurs to current entrepreneurs. It’s like a real startup college plus angel investment. It’s difficult to enter since out of up to 800 monthly applications registered we only choose 10 companies. With a lot of incubators in Shanghai, Suhehui offers free office space for startups to stay as long as they want.

Suhehuiインキュベーターについて、またどうしたらスタートアップが志願できるのかを教えてください。

There are six offices around Shanghai, including Zhejang, Beijing, Cheongdu, Hangzhou, and Suzhou.

How much investment do you put into these startups?

In seed round we invest RMB 50,000 ~ 200,000 to take less than 8 % stake with valuation RMB 2.5 ~ 5 million. After the seed round, the fundraising process is very quick. In the angel round, we invest in startups with an offline angel investor group. This syndicate model helps reduce the risk by investing into early stage startups together. The investment amount ranges from RMB 1 to 3 million and valuation ranges from RMB 8 to 20 Million.

What’s the market trend in China and which of Suhehui’s startups reflect it?

The age of entrepreneurs is increasingly younger. O2O is surely the trend in the market. Consumer related business like clothes, eating, living, working and transportation.

51Qiguai.com is a grocery delivery service to the University campus. With 30,000 daily orders, there are 20 campuses in Shanghai using the service, and it also covers Hangzhou, Beijing and Guangzhou. Students can make online orders in advance, then the company sends groceries to school using its operation channel. The student can pick it up at several stations on campus. The company just received investment from Zihui Venture Capital with RMB$100 million valuation.

24Tidy.com is a laundry delivery service and the business model is same. The company sends a person to pick up the laundry and send it back after washing. The company raised US$20 million investment from Sequoia Capital.

Tell us about successful startup portfolios in Suhehui.

Wanzi.cc enables Chinese people traveling to other countries to find a Chinese speaking local guide. The founder previously worked for Alibaba, now leads the company with a 100 million RMB valuation. With 50 staff, each day the company generates more than 10 deals.

Mikecrm.com develops an online sheet-making tool, which helps enterprises with their customer management and marketing. The SaaS company now has 100,000 subscribers from enterprise and currently Suhehui’s online application form using the API is using Mikecrm. The company has received 4 million USD investment from Sequoia Capital.

The impressive thing about the Central European nation’s rise in gaming is that it’s a product of entrepreneurship and a little bit of government support. Germany supplies a small amount of financing, tax breaks, advice, and space for startups. But mostly, it’s a bootstrapped industry. Fledgling companies like the region’s low costs and maelstrom of tech talent (which includes many expats from all over the world). But it’s really a long-held passion for games that keeps it all going, said Handy Games chief executive Chris Kassulke, a Wuerzburg, Germany-based studio that has worked in mobile for 15 years.

The International Games Week Berlin — a mini-version of the huge Gamescom event in Cologne, Germany, every August — is a kind of collaboration that you would never see in the United States. Quo Vadis itself had about 2,500 registrations, up 400 from a year ago. Its audience was spread thin among the other events and venues. But these showcases are friendly, not competitive, toward each other.

Berlin officials would like to argue that their city is the best gaming hub in Europe. But numerous folks from outside of the city noted that it has a smaller population of gaming employees than Hamburg, Cologne, and other locales.

All of Germany’s various game hubs are on the rise. From 2004 to 2013, the number of game developer and publisher jobs in Germany grew from 6,938 to 10,230, according to Elmar Giglinger, the chief executive of the German government’s Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, the regional government entity that deals with the film and media industries.

Revenue among these game companies has risen 14 percent per year. And if you count user acquisition and marketing tech, the number of industry-related jobs rises to 25,000, said Stephan Reichart, the organizer of Quo Vadis. That’s a lot more than Finland’s job base of 2,600 game developers, and a lot less than the U.S., which has big publicly traded game companies.

Unlike the U.S., Germany doesn’t have a big entertainment industry. The German government pumps a huge amount of money into films, but the movies aren’t global blockbusters. By comparison, it has pumped scant money into games, partly out of the politically driven concern that they’re bad for kids, too violent, or too addictive.

Venture investors don’t pour tons of money into games in Germany. Companies such as Goodgame Studios, which had $220 million in revenues last year and 245 million users, grew without such funding.

Germany’s game market is around $3 billion. And market research firm Newzoo estimates that the overall game market is $91.5 billion. But German game developers and publishers themselves only hold about 7 percent of their home market, said Reichart. That is down from 11 percent in the past. So, while the number of German game industry jobs has grown, German share of the industry revenues has not grown as fast as foreign share of Germany’s game revenues.

“We need to stand as an industry and get back to where our market share was in the past,” he said.
