Letterman: Thank you very much. Beautiful! Excellent! Here we go. Our first guest tonight is a three-time Academy award nominated actor. His films have made a staggering $6 billion. Whoa. Hell, I got that on me. He stars in a brand new motion picture entitled The Tourist, it opens on Friday. Ladies and gentlemen, here’s Johnny Depp.

Letterman: Good to see you, Johnny. How are you doing?

Depp: It’s nice to see you. I’m all right.

Letterman: I watched your movie, I don’t want to seem goofy about this, I enjoy watching you in films because you never know when you are going to pull some stuff. You know what I mean?

Depp: Yes.

Letterman: As an actor, it’s fascinating to watch you, and that’s what you want.
Depp: That’s kind of been the problem with my career for—
Letterman: No, no. You know what I was thinking about? I think the first time I saw you on the big screen was in Edward Scissorhands.
Letterman: How long ago was that? That has been twenty years, hasn’t it?

Depp: That’s been twenty years. Yes.

Letterman: Kind of an odd film.

Depp: Yeah. In some ways.
Letterman: Do you like working with Tim Burton?

Depp: Yes, very much. We’ve done a number now over the years.

Letterman: Of all the directors, you can’t really say who you prefer, but you guys are symbiotic. Is that right?

Depp: Yes. We’ve developed a [?]. It just sort of works somehow.

Letterman: Where did you make that movie?

Depp: Tampa, Florida.


Letterman: How did they get you--, that leather thing with the—
Depp: Yeah. It had a tremendous amount of leather in it.

Letterman: Yes, it must have been godly uncomfortable, right?

Depp: It is hideous.
Letterman: As an actor, can you get to a point where you can act with being aware of this horrific costume?

Depp: No, no, because you’re basically bound up like an old [?], in leather, in rubber, and things like that. It could be somebody’s Sunday night.
Letterman: Yes, what? Hello. A Sunday night!

Depp: It’s always uncomfortable.

Letterman: How long would they leave you in the suit? Would they have to take breaks
Depp: Yes, they’d drag me down those slip and slides. It’s pretty much an all-day affair. Letterman: But it’s a health hazard. You could overheat, I’m sure.

Depp: I did overheat a few times, yes. There was a scene in the film where I am being chased by the cops and I have to run a great distance down the street in this very strange little neighborhood. On about the ninth take, I was overheating pretty seriously. I took a detour to the side of someone’s house and, you know, I let loose.
Letterman: Mr. Depp, when you say you let loose, tell the jury exactly what we are talking about.
Depp: I upchucked.
Letterman: You’re here on a good night, buddy.
Depp: Yes.

Letterman: When you were a kid starting out, actors who are iconic like James Dean, you know him of course, you must have enjoyed his works : Yes, I know him very well. I’m very lucky.

Letterman: What was it like to have a good friend who is such a great actor? Any hints any advice from him?

Depp: Yes, a lot. He basically had the great gift of not really caring.
Letterman: Is that a good thing for an actor?

Depp: Yes. I think that’s the best thing you could—

Letterman: Why?
Depp: Because you don’t put so much pressure on yourself, I suppose. You are able to stay relaxed in a scene.
Letterman: You just sort of let the part overcome you, or you overcome the part, but you don’t have to think about it. It’s not calculated is what you are saying.
Depp: No, exactly.
Letterman: He must have seen your work and enjoyed it.
Depp: I don’t know. I’m not sure.
