Snaptee gets US$600K funding, wants everyone to become t-shirt designers
Chances are, you’re not a t-shirt designer. But you most likely have a smarthphone with a camera. With just this — and an eye for interesting photos, of course — you can become the next design icon, at least with t-shirts, with Snaptee.
Snaptee.co, a Hong Kong-based startup that lets smartphone users print out their photos as t-shirt designs, has just received a US$600,000 funding from a group of Singapore and Hong Kong investors, reports Tech Crunch. These include Yat Siu of Outblaze Management Team and Animoca, Chris Lee of 6waves, Mikaal Abdulla from 8 Securities, Singapore-based angel investor Emanuel R. Breiter and Hong Kong-based investor Tytus Michalski of Fresco Capital.
The premise is simple. The Snaptee application — currently available for iOS devices — lets you tweak your photos and have these printed out as t-shirt designs. You can have your shirt printed and shipped to you for $19.99 apiece. The team ships worldwide for the same price.
The app has six filters and 20 templates to choose from, and lets you adjust color and brightness values for the most creative effect. Going beyond printing your own shirts, Snaptee also offers a platform for sharing your designs with the world. Other buyers can order your shirt design for US$24.99 apiece.

We got in touch with co-founder Wai-Lun Hong, who told e27 that Snaptee is all about creativity. “With Snaptee, we bring down the barrier to an unprecedented low level. Imagine in 30 seconds, with your iPhone, you can finish designing a slogan tee with a picture you took of golden gate bridge, and it will ship to your home for just $19.99. To me, I think its amazing, and our team are set to make it happen!”

Snaptee also lets users “remix” others’ designs, which have been made publicly shared. This results in somewhat a collaborative output. I asked whether the team envisions Snaptee to become an e-commerce platform for shirt designers, and Wai-Lun said this is a possibility, but not yet their priority. “The top priority of us is to create a culture that people really enjoy designing fashionable t-shirt for themselves. Remix is one of the feature we know people love.”
One concern I brought up was the potential for intellectual property rights infringement, and the Snaptee team seems to be well aware of this. “Generally, we remove anything violate IP rights, that include direct copying of logo and brands. While remixing others design is another story that we need to work on, but generally speaking, we respect IP right and try to avoid any party’s right being offended.”
