Jack Ma Wants to Buy Yahoo, Everyone Else Not So Sure

Jack Ma is the CEO of China’s Alibaba, which Yahoo owns a stake in. But the apprentice may become the master if Ma gets his way; he has said that he’s very interested in buying Yahoo. At a speech yesterday at Stanford University, he said:

"I’m very interested in Yahoo. The Alibaba Group is very important to Yahoo, and Yahoo is very important to us."

Of course, Yahoo is not officially for sale. The company is floundering and it did just fire its CEO — over the phone — but Yahoo founder Jerry Yang reportedly said after the firing that the company is not for sale. Still, there’s plenty of speculation.

Even if Ma doesn’t get the chance to buy Yahoo wholesale, he has right-of-refusal to buy back Yahoo’s 40 percent stake in Alibaba should the company be sold to someone else. But it seems increasingly clear that Ma is looking to buy the whole enchilada himself, should the opportunity arise.

That news, of course, has led to some consternation in the United States. Privacy activists have expressed concerns that Yahoo’s data on American users might be surrendered to the Chinese government if the company were to be purchased by Alibaba.

Alibaba has rejected these assertions, saying that data from outside China would stay there, and thus would not be under the jurisdiction of Chinese authorities.

Anyway, Ma may well be up to something. He’s said he plans to spend the next year in the US learning more about the country and the market. Perhaps Alibaba is planning to expand stateside regardless of what happens with Yahoo? We’ll keep an eye on it.

Needless to say, concerns remain. Still, could Alibaba be any worse to Yahoo users than Yahoo itself? Skeptics of Alibaba may do well to remember that Jerry Yang’s Yahoo surrendered the private emails of Shi Tao and other Yahoo users to Chinese government, resulting in multiple arrests and, in some cases, long prison sentences. In 2006 Congressional hearings, when other net companies promised to keep China user data outside of the mainland to protect user privacy from government incursions, Yahoo stated they could not protect the privacy of Chinese users.

MiShang Shows Off Fashion, Photos, and Social E-Commerce

Social e-commerce and fashion photo app MiShang is one of a bajillion new Chinese start-ups that fits into the category of a ‘light community’ – i.e.: a not-too-intensive or demanding social media service that you can enjoy as an adjunct to another SNS.

MiShang is a curious hybrid, being either a neat fashion-oriented photo app, or a social shopping platform – or both – to its users. It allows sign-up via a Sina Weibo or Tencent QQ account, and places a strong emphasis on sharing your fashion and brand ‘likes’ with your friends using Sina or Tencent Weibo, or QZone. The company’s own website uses the English phrase “stylecasting” to describe its social approach, in that it’s mostly about browsing a live-stream of stylish items from the people that you follow.

The e-commerce aspect of MiShang ties to China’s largest online shopping platform, Taobao. That allows MiShang to earn money from click-thrus that lead to purchases on branded Taobao storefronts.

The service and app encourages users to also show what they love and what they’re wearing, allowing your MiShang fans to ‘like’ an outfit, or comment on it.

Mishang’s CEO is Jiang Fang, a former employee of Li Kai-fu’s Innovation Works who says he left the famous Chinese start-up incubator to make a light social network, inspired by the American interests/pinboard site Pinterest.

Zaker: The News-Readin’, Page-Flippin’ Flipboard Clone [REVIEW]

Most successful international apps have a group of Chinese imitators. The success of magazine-style news-reading app Flipboard has brought with it many such Chinese “brothers,” such as Fruit, Netease reader, and perhaps the most popular of them all, Zaker. To commemorate its growing acclaim this year, it’s time to give it a mini-review.

世界的に最も人気のあるアプリには、常にそれを真似た一群の中国版が存在する。雑誌形式でニュースを読むアプリのFlipboard(フリップボード）が成功したことで、そういった中国の「姉妹アプリ」が登場している。その「姉妹アプリ」にはFruitやNetease readerなどがあるが、おそらく最も人気があるのはZakerであろう。今年、そのZakerの評判が伸びていることを賞賛するために、ささやかなリビューをしてみたいと思う。

Zaker is made by Dooland, a web company founded in 2007, and has separate versions for iPhone and iPad. Like Flipboard – which got blocked in China back in May of this year – it carefully grabs news and interesting articles from numerous sources – from microblogs such as Weibo, blogs, news sites, and magazines, and updates in real time. Users can add their own sources via RSS and Google Reader.

As a reading app, Zaker has done much to improve the reading experience. Pages are turned with the same motion you would use to turn pages in a real magazine. Also, Zaker makes use of social networks such as Sina Weibo to allow you to share what you’re perusing.

Zaker(扎客）は2007年に設立されたウェブ企業のDooland（読覧）によって開発され、iPhone用とiPad用に別々のバージョンがある。Flipboard（中国では今年の５月にブロックされた）と同様に、微博などのマイクロブログやブログ、ニュースサイト、雑誌やリアルタイムの最新情報など数多くの情報源からニュースや興味深い記事を入念に取り上げている。ユーザーはRSSやグーグルリーダーを通じて独自の情報源を加えることもできる。

Zakerは、ニュースアプリとしての読む環境を向上させるために色々と改良を行なってきた。Zakerでは本当の雑誌をめくるような感覚でページをめくることができ、また新浪微博のようなソーシャルネットワークを利用して、ユーザーが読んでいるニュースや記事などを共有することもできるようにしている。

When you login to Zaker, it’s a bit like a Twitter or Weibo app, with vertical scrolling to browse content. You can click on any link and read the news or watch the videos directly in the app. Clicking on the screen in the upper right corner lets you send a new tweet (to Weibo, I mean). You can favourite, retweet, and comment on any tweets you like inside Zaker, making it into a sort of satellite social network. Also, when you write and send your tweet, you can directly use the camera to take pictures.

Chen Chi-he, the CEO of Dooland, believes its advantage lies in the content. About 300 newspapers, 800 general news websites, and many magazines have cooperated with them in agreeing to aggregate content. Talking to Chinese tech site Hexun, he said:

"Copyright risk is what we questioned about Flipboard’s model, so we have to consider that fully by establishing a good relationship with the content side [...] We will try to combine with e-commerce, LBS, and games. But at this stage, what we should do first is build a user base."

In China, on a subway or bus, you often see people reading while commuting. The market for such readers will surely only get bigger here, especially as Apple and its iOS gadgets grow in popularity in China. Perhaps Zaker will lead the reading revolution here.

China’s Top 20 Daily Deals Sites – and Who Has the Hottest Deals?

In updated stats from group buy deal aggregator DaTaoTuan which go right up to the end of August, we get a new snapshot of China’s frantic and fragmented daily deals segment. Last time we checked, earlier this summer, we saw Tencent’s QQ Tuan was the king in terms of both market share and revenue.

This time round we see the top 20 deal sites in the country, and also get a good sense of who’s creating – and selling – the most successful packages. Note that DaTaoTuan didn’t scrape revenue figures this time.

China’s Group Buy Top 20

The market share in China, by revenue, up to the end of August (pictured above) shows that Tencent is still the leader. Below QQ Tuan, however, it’s still a choppy sea of rough competition. Meituan has slipped from second place in June to fourth in August; Manzuo from its third ranking down to fifth; 24Quan from fourth to eighth; and FTuan – which bagged US$60 million in funding this week – from sixth to tenth.

We were surprised to see that 55Tuan – whom we recently saw being sued by a comedian for using his image without permission – rose from ninth to be ranked second behind Tencent.
