The first merchants that have introduced it are nine chain stores, Guoda Pharmacy, Aiyingshi (children’s and infants’ goods), Diary Queen (fast food), RAINBOW (Department stores), LOTUS (supermarkets), MINSUN (department store), Haolinju (Convenience stores), Guoda365 (Convenience stores) and One Plus One Super Market. WeChat Has Enabled Payments at Physical Stores

A new payments capability has been added on WeChat, the leading Chinese mobile messaging app, that enables payments at physical stores.

The feature is named “Card Swiping”. With a tap on the button, a QR code and a bar code will be generated. Merchants who have supporting POS machines or other devices will be able to accept payments by scanning either code.

So far the WeChat feature only supports debit cards bundled with WeChat accounts, instead of credit cards.

Payments under RMB300 (about US$50) don’t require password.

The online service, dubbed Edaixi, currently gets about 1,000 orders per day, and plans to reach 10,000 per day within one year. Edaixi’s main service charges a flat RMB 99 (US$16) rate per each of its custom laundry bags, whereas most of its competitors only charge per piece of clothing. It will also clean individual pieces of clothing, shoes, furniture, air conditioners, and handbags.

Tencent Expands Its O2O Territory, Again, Investing In Laundry This Time

Over the past few years, a number of on-demand laundry services have sprouted up. Another such new service Edaixi (“E-washing”) has attracted investment from Tencent.

Unlike many laundry startups such as 24tidy, Ganxike (“dry cleaner”), Xiyigj (“laundry’s helper”), Ayibang (“maid’s help”), WeWash to name a few, Edaixi was born out of Rong Chain Laundry, a time-honored laundry brand founded in 1990. Rong Chain’s established offline laundry chain and its 4 million users definitely give Edaixi the upper hand in the O2O laundry competition.

Aside from clothes, Edaixi also provides on-demand cleaning for air conditioners, furniture covers, leather goods and shoes.

[Update]Alipay Teams Up with Global Blue to Provide Chinese Tourists Tax Refund Service in Europe

Alipay, the payment arm of Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba, has entered into partnership with Swiss tax-refund company Global Blue to launch a service that will allow Chinese tourists to receive tax refunds directly into their Alipay accounts when they are shopping in Europe.

According to the company, the service will be available from mid-July at 5,000 stores in France, Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom, as well as South Korea. More countries are expected to roll out the service in the coming month, the company added.

Xiaomi’s upoming tablet, the Mi Pad, will go on sale in beta for the price of… 16 cents

Earlier this month popular Chinese phone maker Xiaomi announced it would venture into tablets with the upcoming launch of the Mi Pad, a 7.9-inch screen device that will cost RMB1499 (about US$240) at 16GB of storage. While the revelation came as no surprise, one unknown remained – founder Lei Jun gave no release date for the device.

While there’s still no telling when ordinary Chinese consumers can log on to Xiaomi’s website and pick up a Mi Pad, diehard fans will soon have a shot at snagging it for the price of RMB1 (about US$0.16).

Xiaomi intends to ship 60 million smartphones this year, more than triple its count for 2013. The company recently began operations in Malaysia, it’s fourth market outside mainland China, and will likely enter India and the rest of Southeast Asia this year.

Xiaomi breaks into global top 10 for smartphone shipments, kicks out HTC

279.4 million smartphones shipped globally in Q1 2014 – and 97.5 million of those are in China. The most significant change in the newest figures from Canalys is that Chinese phone-maker Xiaomi has broken into the global top 10 for the first time.

Boosted by buyers in China, half of the worldwide top 10 phone brands are now Chinese. Huawei is third, Lenovo fourth, Xiaomi debuts in sixth, Coolpad is eighth, and ZTE is ninth. Samsung remains the global smartphone leader, accounting for 31 percent of shipments, while Apple is second with 16 percent.

The upstart brand is working on launches in 10 new countries this year, including major markets like India and Indonesia. Xiaomi’s Hugo Barra explained to Tech in Asia last week that its next launch will happen in Malaysia in the next few weeks.
