Here at Tech In Asia we tend to tilt our coverage towards startups and industry news, as there are plenty of other great blogs around the world that keep tabs on every single component that’s inside every single gadget released by LG or Acer.

At the same time, we still like to keep our eyes on big-picture gadget trends and challenges that the Asian hardware giants face.

Social Photo Service Cooliris Enables Sharing Drone-captured Photos

Social photo aggregation service Cooliris announces today that it has been integrated into drones by Aibotix, a German autonomous aerial vehicle maker.

Aibotix’s next generation hexacopter Aibot X6 has a built-in camera mount that will be able to take photos of aerial angles of objectives and automatically upload to Cooliris Group real time. Cooliris users then can access photos or share to private groups on their iPad and iPhone.

Cooliris is the first consumer photo application that is integrated into Aibotix drones — it may be one of the first when it comes to drone-captured photo sharing in general. As a social photo viewing and management service, Cooliris has integrated more than 20 social services worldwide for users to browse across-web photos in one place.

Aibotix, founded in 2010, have been working on advanced image processing, sensor technology and robotics for many years. The Aibot X6 is sold around the world.

New smart wi-fi router with a touchscreen makes home wi-fi set up a lot less painful

Wi-fi routers are the worst. They’re all still configured by hidden away and arcane set-up pages, and the whole process of making wi-fi for your home hasn’t improved for decades. A new router with a touchscreen is aiming to change all that. The smart wi-fi router is made by GEAK, the same Chinese squad that makes Android-based smartphones and the smartwatch that I reviewed earlier this week.

The GEAK Router was unveiled today – hat-tip to Technode for spotting it – but no price or shipping date has been set yet. The company has said that the smart router, which features a touchscreen to make set-up a hell of a lot easier – will be cheaper than the upcoming model from rival Xiaomi. But that has no price set either.

GEAK’s router supports the new 802.11ac frequency as well as older frequencies, and comes with a 2TB hard-drive to serve as a home entertainment hub. Xiaomi’s router does the same two things.

Ex-Rocket, Groupon guys start CompareHero, a finance comparison site in Malaysia

Comparing prices on loans is useful when planning your finances. Yet, this proves to be an arduous process since you have to manually go to providers and find out the details. In Malaysia, CompareHero wants to solve this problem by helping users make informed choices by comparing credit cards, loans, insurance policies, and even mobile and internet plans on a single website. In its first few months of existence, the site managed to help over 10,000 users.

WeChat to launch banking platform by mid-December

WeChat‘s upcoming financial services platform will be launched in mid-December this year, according to Yicai (article in Chinese). Tencent (HKG:0700) is working with four Chinese fund companies to create a financial product in which users can invest their savings, similar to Baidu’s Baifa and Alibaba’s Yuebao.

Users can store their savings straight from their smartphones through China’s most popular messaging app WeChat via TenPay, Tencent’s very own third-party payment system. Their money will be accessible at any time and there will be no limit to the amount of money they can deposit (unlike Baidu’s product).

Australia’s CoinJar gets $455,000 to build bitcoin wallet and exchange

CoinJar, a startup that launched a bitcoin wallet with 10,000 registered users in Australia, has secured a A$500,000 ($455,000) seed round led by Australian venture capital firm Blackbird Ventures, which put in $228,000.

Angel investors have also participated in the round, and they include entrepreneur Torsten Hoffman, RetailMeNot founders Guy King and Bevan Clark, game developer Rob Murray, and technology investor Chris Hitchen.

This, it claims, enables it to offer bitcoin at prices and fees lower than that of other Australian exchanges like SpendBitcoins, Omnicoins, and Buy Bitcoin Australia. Since launching in May, the exchange has done over $1.82 million in trades.

Lastly, CoinJar also operates a payment gateway that enables merchants to accept payments in bitcoin without worrying about exchange rates and Bitcoin address handling. Online businesses are charged a one percent merchant fee, which is two to four times less than what PayPal charges.

Baidu Mobile App Announced 400 million Users

Baidu Mobile app announced 400 million users, with 100 monthly active users, yesterday.

The Baidu Mobile has included all services the company offer, search, maps, music, video, mobile reading, news, Baike (a Wikipedia-like service), etc. The app streams videos through Baidu Video (a video aggregation and search service) and searches e-books across the Web and save them into your phone. It also has features like code scanner for price comparison.

The core feature with Baidu Moible, of course, is still search where most of Baidu’s revenues are from. Baidu believes they have made mobile search much easier-to-use through technologies and new functions like voice search. In Q2 2013, for the first time 10% of Baidu’s total revenues was from mobile. But the company saw a higher percentage of traffic that had shifted from PC to mobile.

Chumenwenwen: Mobile Voice Search Application Aimed at Chinese Market

Why type to search for nearby restaurants, hotels or even toilets using a tiny keyboard when you can just speak to your phone. That’s the premise of the new, free Chumenwenwen voice search application that is available on multiple platforms including WeChat, the most popular mobile messaging app in China.

“We now have more than 200,000 users, and the figure is rapidly expanding now,” Yizhou Zhu, 26, co-founder of Shanghai-based startup Mobvoi, developer of Chumenwenwen. Graduated from Stanford University, he chose to devote himself to mobile voice search.
