360Buy’s Express Delivery Trucks Ready to Hit the Road After Government Approval

We reported recently on a significant strategic shift in China’s e-commerce industry whereby a number of leading e-tailers wanted to start logistics companies so as to deliver their own products to customers. Now, China’s State Post Bureau has evaluated all their applications and it’s good news for only one of them: 360Buy. It was the only e-commerce site granted a license to expand into the courier industry, thereby dashing the hopes of Vancl, Coo8, and VIPshop.

In response to the news, 360Buy’s CEO Liu Qiangdong took to his Weibo account to say that his company’s express delivery service will launch at the end of August. It marks the end of a battle that has actually rumbled on for two whole years when the site – China’s second-largest B2C e-tailer – first applied to expand into logistics.

The strategic move being made by some of these sites reflects a desire to crackdown on the weakest link in its chain to customers, the assortment of hundreds of private and state-run courier businesses that deliver billions of dollars worth of items each year. The recently-listed VIPshop (NYSE:VIPS) claims that the company hits a successful delivery rate of just 95 percent with its current logistics partners, and that it needs to up those percentage points in whatever way it can – even if it means a phenomenally expensive shift into a new industry.

But the e-commerce market leader in China, Alibaba (with its Taobao and Tmall businesses), is sticking with the current system, and has made no sign of moving into logistics itself.

In total, the State Post Bureau approved 260 licenses for logistics companies in this initial round of audits, with all but one of them being conventional courier firms. The likes of Vancl and other hopefuls might be luckier next time.

だが、中国のEコマース市場最大手である（TaobaoとTmall事業を兼ね備えた）Alibabaは、現行システムに従い、流通産業へのシフトを行う形跡などは見受けられない。

Japan’s Food Photo App SnapDish Lands New Key Partnerships

It was just a few weeks ago that we told you about Vuzz Inc’s new SnapDish Android app aiming at a global audience. Today the company is informing us that they now have a key partnership in Korea as well, launching in the nation’s largest Android market, T Store, as well as the Japanese market qiip. Both are run by SK Planet, which will promote SnapDish in these markets [1].

Back in April when SnapDish (www.snapdi.sh) partnered with Chinese social network Renren, their total download count stood at about 120,000. But currently that total stands at 260,000 downloads – not staggering figures, but certainly solid progress as it has more than doubled its downloads in just over two months.

Now with some solid partnerships in key markets like China and Korea, SnapDish’s Hidetaka Fukushima tells me that he sees great possibilities in the Asia region for their product:

Cool New Karaoke App for iPhone Takes China By Storm

In a way, it’s amazing there wasn’t a good karaoke app for Chinese iPhone users years ago. After all, the KTV (China’s term for karaoke) experience is a big part of the entertainment scene in China. But Chen Hua, the man behind ‘Chang Ba,’ an iPhone KTV app that’s growing swiftly in popularity, is probably not too upset that no one beat him to the punch.

ある意味、中国のiPhoneユーザーが楽しめるカラオケアプリが数年前までなかったという事実に驚きだ。と言うのも、中国のエンターテイメント・シーンではKTV（中国で言うカラオケ）はかなり重要なのだ。だが、急激にその人気度を高めているiPhoneのカラオケアプリ「Chang Ba」の発起人であるChen Huaは、おそらく、彼の先を行く者がいなかったことなどさほど気にしてはいないのだろう。

Chen (pictured below) has actually been working with his team on the app for 18 months now, but the app’s recent launch has been met with incredible demand: nearly a million downloads over the first twenty days, according to Chen. He revealed this during an extensive interview with Sina Tech, but for those who don’t read Chinese, we thought it might be worth sharing some of the highlights.

Chen（写真下）は、チームメンバーと共に実に18ヶ月に渡りこのアプリの作業を行ってきたが、先日、アプリのサービスを開始し、驚くほどの反響を得た。Chenによると、最初の20日間でおよそ100万回もダウンロードされたと言う。中国語を読めないユーザーのために、我々は、Sina Techとの多くをカバーするインタビューで彼が明らかにした主要な点をいくつか紹介していきたいと思う。

Chen isn’t a newcomer to the world of startups, having launched a failed coupon site before beginning work on Chang Ba. There were a number of reasons for its failure, but one that any Chinese startup might do well to heed is that Chen says he was overpowered by the big companies in the internet business. “Competition in the PC internet market is too fierce, and the big companies control the flow of traffic,” he told Sina Tech.

Chen also shed some light on how he and his team came to make a karaoke app:

At that time, we felt no one was doing anything with voices on mobile. At first, we wanted to make an app where users created their own content, like recording themselves telling stories. But we found that Chinese users weren’t good at creating their own content. Only a few people could create their own stories or songs, but everyone can sing a few songs.

It turns out Chen wasn’t wrong. The app has nearly a million downloads, is in the top 5 in its category on iTunes, and Chen says they’ve barely done any promotion for it. “We don’t need to do any special promotion,” Chen said, the app has spread via word of mouth. While there is a neat karaoke web app made by a Chinese startup, clearly that other company made the major mistake of not taking it onto people’s smartphones.

With regard to copyright issues, Chen says his company is aware of them and striving to respect copyright law, which is why the current selection of songs on Chang Ba is so limited (just over 1,000). But the company’s focus over the next two years will be to buy the rights to more songs now that the app is seeing some success.

Finally, Sina Tech asked Chen the question “every [Chinese] investor is going to ask.” Are you worried about China’s web giant, Tencent, copying your product? Chen responded:

Every startup gets asked this question, but the only answer is whether or not you’ve made your own product well. If you haven’t made your own product well, then what’s the use in paying attention to others? Is your product the best one in China? Is your team’s ability to execute better than anyone else’s? Whether or not you’re successful depends on you, not others.

Chen finished: “Every failed company is because you didn’t do [the product] well enough or you made a mistake, not because other people were competing with you.”

Understanding Japan’s Anti-Download Bill

Many of our readers in Japan have likely heard about the country’s recent revision to its copyright law late last week, which makes illegally downloading music or videos carry a prison sentence of two years or less, or a fine of up to 2 million yen (almost $25,000). This is a tricky story to digest, as there are many reports out there that have been less than precise in how they have related this news. Here’s what I’ve gathered about the new law during some weekend reading.

先週終わりに日本政府が提出した著作権法の修正法案について、日本の読者の多くは既に耳にしていると思うが、これによって、違法に音楽や動画をダウンロードすると2年以下の懲役、または200万円以下の（ほぼ2万5000米ドル）の罰金に科されることになる。このニュースを告げる多くの報告記事には全く事実と異なるものもあり、この事例を整理するにはいささか手ぎわを要する。以下は、週末に関連記事を読み漁り、私なりに要点をまとめたものだ。

The bill was approved on June 15 and goes into effect on October 1st. There have already been laws in place for uploading copyrighted content, with a maximum of 10 years in prison of a fine of up to 10 million yen (almost $125,000). But according to Mainichi Shimbun:

[C]omplaints have continued to come from the music industry, which claims that piracy cases have not dropped after downloading pirated content was made illegal. In response, the opposition Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and New Komeito sought criminal punishment for downloading, and the ruling Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) also approved.

この法案は6月15日に可決され、10月1日から施行される。著作権を侵害する形でコンテンツをアップロードした場合の法は既に施行されており、10年以下の懲役もしくは1000万円以下の罰金則（ほぼ12万5000米ドル）が科される。だが、毎日新聞ではこのように述べている：

無許可ダウンロードが違法になってからも、違法ダウンロードの件数は減っておらず、音楽業界からの苦情が続いていた。それに応える形で、野党である自民党と公明党は違法ダウンロードに対して刑事罰を導入するとし、さらに民主党もこれに可決した。

Thus on June 15 during a meeting of the lower house education and science committee, a revision was submitted after a Q&A session, and was passed “with majorities in the LDP, New Komeito, and the DPJ without any questioning or testimony from experts.”

From what I can gather the new revision hinges on the user’s awareness that he/she has downloaded something illegal. The Japan Times cites DPJ member Yuko Mori as saying that the bill’s vague wording regarding “those who are aware” of the illegality could bring about “arbitrary prosecutions.”

よって6月15日、衆議院の文部科学委員会で、審議後、修正案が提出され、「質疑や専門家証言などなく、自民党、公明党、そして民主党により賛成多数」にて可決された。

Over on Torrent Freak, there’s a good explanation of the RIAJ’s proposed automated system for ISPs to monitor user connections and cross-check uploaded data against digital fingerprints of copyrighted content from an external database. The hope from rights holders is that your internet provider would then block infringing uploads, and maybe even send out warning letters to users.
