The Japanese government may designate a special day to honor the nation’s scenic mountains.

On Friday, the Lower House of Parliament passed an amendment to Japan’s Holiday Act to designate August 11 as Mountain Day (Yama no Hi). The public holiday is aimed at “giving opportunities to get close to mountains and to appreciate the benefits of mountains.”

Japan’s topography is highly mountainous—peaks cover 70% of the island nation. Of course you can’t talk about mountains in this country without bringing up the iconic Mount Fuji. The nearly perfectly shaped, 3776-meter-high mountain is celebrated the world over and attracts mountain climbers and tourists from around the globe.

The only way I could pick a winner was to narrow it down to the most unique experience of the five. In that respect, “The Act of Killing” is distinct not because of its premise, but because of the exercise it gives itself.

Director Joshua Oppenheimer asks Anwar Congo, a major player in the Indonesian paramilitary Pancasila Youth, to help him film re-enactments of the killings that occurred during the organization’s anti-communist purge of 1965-66. Congo brags about having tortured and killed over 1,000 during the purge. He’s keen to relate the war crimes to a wider public, even hoping the whole thing will look like the old gangster movies that influenced the style and manner of his murders.

There are no great physical comedians any more.
This isn’t to say that physical presence isn’t a part of today’s comedy: it is. It’s impossible, for instance, to think of Louis C.K.’s humor without imagining his bear-like girth along with it. It’s difficult to think of laughing at Kristen Wiig without also thinking of her tiny frame (and of the wild gesticulations she is capable of). And Melissa McCarthy’s body is as much a part of her humor as her mouth or her mind. But this isn’t really the same as making your body do funny things, an art neglected of late.

We have our Steve Martins and Jim Carreys, but they and other comedians of their type tend to follow a trajectory that leads them away from their slapstick roots, toward more subdued romantic comedy, even realistic drama.
Pure physical comedy once ruled the roost. If you want proof of this, you can find no better example of it than the work of Harold Lloyd, whose 1923 classic Safety Last! was released last week on DVD and Blu-Ray by Criterion.

The kind of laughing you do during this film, and in fact the laughing you do during most comic films of the silent era, is more pure and often more whole-hearted than the kind of laughing you might do during contemporary comedies.

But O'Toole humanized the hero in ways that seem miraculous when you consider the caginess of the story that surrounds him; he does it, I think, by making Lawrence's conflicted and volatile emotions transparent even when the film keeps his motives mysterious. You never think, "This movie is a mess" or "This character makes no sense" because O'Toole makes sure you see the character as a paradoxically ordinary extraordinary man, cocksure and idealistic and naive, inclined to get drunk on his own power and success, but always thinking, always questing, always figuring things out.

Turkey is a primarily Muslim country so women should dress modestly covering their legs and upper arms. Turkish summers are very hot, and the Lycian Way is best traveled in the spring and fall.

The narcocorrido is a Mexican style of ballad that draws from mariachi, blues and country music elements, with a tempo and accordion accompaniment straight out of polka. It's a strange brew. Stranger still are the lyrics, which find melodious ways to exalt violent, ruthless drug dealers, the kind who assassinate cops and decapitate snitches. Actual drug trafficking gangs often commission the songs, both inspiring and taking inspiration from their grisly lyrics. In the documentary "Narco Cultura" narcocorrido producers and musicians brag that their folksy genre is about to become "the next hip hop," a popular form born in the dreams and frustrations of poor people.

Why is this happily married father of an infant selling murder music? Maybe because that music furnishes the modest but comfortable suburban lifestyle he enjoys in Los Angeles.

"The Christmas Candle" is a determinedly retro-minded holiday saga that contains no foul language, gruesome violence indeed anything beyond the mildest suggestion of hanky-panky, and for a certain portion of the moviegoing public, these absences alone would be enough to warrant a recommendation. The trouble is that the filmmakers have also neglected to include such other elements as wit, style, energy or anything resembling a coherent narrative. The end result is the kind of vaguely distasteful Yuletide concoction that viewers normally find playing on cable channels that they don't even realize that they have.

Based on the book by Max Lucado, the film, set in 1890, begins as Reverend David Richmond (Hans Matheson), an idealistic man of God who has lost his faith, accepts a new position in Gladbury, a quaint little English town that appears to have been built from the remains of the sets from a road company of "Oliver." Upon his arrival, he learns the town's odd secret. It seem that every 25 years during the Christmas season, an angel arrives at the local candle shop, owned by the Haddington family for generations, in order to bless one of their candles so that the eventual recipient will receive a miracle after saying a prayer and lighting the candle.

The US Food and Drug Administration has imposed a ban on a company offering personal genetic screening to the general public.

Google-backed 23andme has been ordered to "immediately discontinue" selling its saliva-collection tests after failing to provide information to back its marketing claims.

The tests aims to show how personal genetic codes may affect future health.

The company said it would address concerns.

The start-up has been operating since 2006 and was co-founded by Anne Wojcicki, the wife of Google co-founder Sergey Brin.

For $99 (£61), users receive a kit allowing them to take sample of saliva. This is sent to the company and in return users receive a readout of their genetic code.
