Whether it’s in a movie scene or an actual boardroom, the CEO wants a situation explained to him in simple terms, and looks like he isn’t knowledgeable or interested in the rocket science details of the matter.

Internet-Based Theater Company Lives Between Cyberspace and the Stage

A small Philadelphia-based company called New Paradise Laboratories is re-creating theater for the connected generation. It’s incorporating social networks like Facebook, Skype and Chatroulette into the production and presentation of shows, pulling theater into the virtual space.

This innovative experience takes audiences through a rabbit hole on a visually stimulating online adventure. Stories evolve on social networks with multimedia components from YouTube and Sound Cloud. It can be hard to decipher what’s real and what’s fiction.

Before shows open on stage, the audience gets to interact with characters on Facebook, Twitter and Flickr accounts. The theater company works with actors to develop the fictional characters on social media accounts.

“A few years ago, we realized there was a whole audience of people that weren’t really participating in theater but they really heavily influenced by the Internet. They grew up online,” said Katy Otto, NPL’s activity coordinator. “NPL had a lot of interest in making theater that would appeal to these people.”

For the production Fatebook, the company’s theater experience begins on social media. The cast list is available online and shows all the character’s online accounts.

劇場で劇が始まる前に、観客はFacebook, Twitter や Flickrアカウント上で登場人物と対話する事が出来る。劇団はソーシャルメディアアカウント上で俳優により架空のキャラクターを育てる努力をしている。

Fatebookの開発はソーシャルメディア上で始めた劇団の経験だ。登場人物のリストはオンライン上で利用可能で俳優のオンラインアカウントが表示されている。

“In ‘Fatebook’ it was a cast of characters that built identities on Facebook but with a different account — they would create an identity,” Otto said. “To start the performance you would follow a cast of characters and their interactions with each other. That culminated in a performance where they all met at a party and got to see how different people evolved.”

The 1996-founded theater company worked to bring Broadway home to the Internet, where interactive performances may thrive. Fatebook was one of the first plays of its kind.

“I feel like it’s like a medium where stories can be told in a whole bunch of ways,” NPL’s artistic director Whit MacLaughlin told Mashable. “I wanted to find out how you use translate theater into an online space. You have to figure out the narration of social media — how to convey something about a person.”

Extremely Public Displays of Privacy is the newest experience presented by NPL. The play’s three acts are available online. Act one consists of videos of the two main female protagonists meeting online for the first time on Chatroulette.

Actress Annie Enneking played Fess Elliot in the production. Enneking created Elliot’s online persona for close to a year, taking pictures, writing songs and updating her Facebook 24/7 as her fictional character.

“I felt very vulnerable to do it,” Enneking said. “I was creating the character online for nine months. Suddenly the day the play went up, we had to go through back in time and publish posts given the timeline of the life of production.”

Separating herself from “being Fess” was difficult when the play was over.

“What I loved the most was that I had a constant outlet for my creativity. I would follow my impulses. I was creating little pieces for my character,” she said. “After the show closed, it felt like a little death.”

In addition to molding the two characters’ lives online, the play also incorporated geo-location technology where a character guides you through a park. Audience members could download a sound file for a 45-minute guided tour in a Philadelphia park. Online audiences can take a virtual walk online via YouTube. The third act completed the play with a real-time performance in Philadelphia where the theater is based.

NPL is currently working on its next interactive play called ’27′ — based around the idea that the lives of creative individuals such as Jimi Hendrix and Kurt Cobain end around this time. The production will debut next fall.

Grab Data and Build Your Infographic in Minutes, Using Piktochart

Piktochart is a Malaysia-based startup that focuses on helping customers build infographics fast. Like really fast. I first saw the beta product in Beijing when I met the founders, Goh Ai Ching and Andrea Zaggia. It looks sweet and promising. Eventually, they entered Startup Arena for our Startup Asia Singapore conference and I knew I had bring them in. They won fifth place, which isn’t too bad for a product that was only just ready to demo back then. Now Piktochart is ready for the anyone who loves create interesting graphical presentations.

What I like is its sexy and intuitive drag-and-drop interface.. I quickly made the graphic, pictured above, just to test how Piktochart works. That image took me just about five minutes.

The free version allows you to play around with three themes and download the infographic as image file. The pro version, which cost about $9.99 per month, for a limited time only (no deadline given though), will offer over 20 themes, with additional themes as time passes. The pro version also allows you to download the file as HTML or raw data.

It is a little annoying that you can’t find the pro pricing details though. Clicking the “upgrading to pro” button brings you directly to Paypal, which to be honest is quite an unpleasant surprise. Tom: Kathmandu’s universities put out hundreds of computer engineers every year; and with the lack of work opportunities, these engineers are hungry and motivated, especially for a Silicon Valley-style startup right in their backyard. Add that to the social mission of being a part of not only trying to change their own country but using their skills to change how the world works and create millions of jobs for those in developing countries, and you’ve got a recipe some seriously motivated talent. We’re certainly not at a loss to find programmers with a passion for developing software for the developing world, in the developing world.

2. Your CloudFactory creates opportunities for a claimed million “cloud workers” to do things like digitization, moderation, translation, etc. How does the system work, and what’s the deal for all these workers?

Tom: We use several worker pools, some of which are in Nepal and others through partnerships such as Amazon’s Mechanical Turk. The idea behind all of these systems is a massively distributed workforce who get the huge benefit of not only working from wherever they would like, but also whenever they would like. Our own workforce, that is starting in Nepal, has much more opportunity for growth, training, and feedback which will then give our clients higher quality results.

２．貴方のCloudFactoryはデジタル化、近代化、変遷などの為に百万もの”クラウド・ワーカーズ”に機会を創出していたという事ですが、どのようにシステムが働き、技術者との契約関係はどのようなものか？

3. You have a business card scanning app called BizcardArmy which is a sort of showcase for the CloudFactory.

Tom: BizcardArmy is a great example of CloudFactory in a market flooded with automated business card scanning apps that don’t really work. The efficient and on-demand human workforce that CloudFactory provides is the perfect solution for both the business and the users who get a great solution for turning paper business cards into contacts on their phones. As I said, this is just an example of the power of CloudFactory, and these same principles can be applied to all kinds of ideas from savvy entrepreneurs.

4. What’s your personal startup/entrepreneur story?

Mark: My wife and I actually came to Nepal for a two-week vacation – and that kept getting extended. Three and a half years later we are still here and have teamed up with Tom and his wife to take CloudFactory to the next level. Initially we started as a Ruby on Rails outsourcing company and grew quickly as we hired smart young computer engineers and trained them up.

マーク：妻と私はネパールに２週間の旅行で来た–それが伸び続けた。３年半後、まだここにいてCloudFactoryを次の段階に導く為にトムと彼の妻とチームを組んだ。最初に我々はRuby on Railsをアウトソーシング企業として始め、成長し若く賢い技術者を雇い教育した。

Then we wanted to give training and opportunities to other talented people in Nepal and other developing countries. At the same time we were getting requests from clients to hire people in Nepal to do lead generation, image and video tagging, and other non-programming work. The supply and demand were there, so we started work on an innovative platform to bridge the gap. Initially it was a side project where we reinvested profits and extra time from the outsourcing side of the business, but since January it is now 100 percent of our focus.

5. How’s the startup scene in Nepal?

５．ネパールでの起業状況は？

Tom: To describe Nepal in a word would be “adventure” – which is also how you could describe the startup scene. Wherever it exists in the world. Startups are not for the faint of heart whether you’re an entrepreneur, an investor, or a geek looking to change the world. So, in one way, you could look at Nepal and find all the reasons doing a startup in a country like Nepal is difficult, but if you’re ready to generate your own electricity and pass a few cows on the way to work, you may just find all the hidden advantages that go along with creating a startup at the top of the world; not the least of which is an awesome and hungry workforce or the breath-taking mountain views from the office.

トム：ネパールを一言で言えば”冒険”だ –これは起業状況をも表す事が出来る。どこに存在しようと同じだ。事業家であれ、投資家であれ、世界を変えようとしている変人であれ、起業家は弱いものではない。ある意味で、ネパールのような国で起業する事の難しさを見つける事が出来るかもしれないが、もし電気を作り、仕事場への道を作る心の準備があれば世界の頂上での起業に隠れた利点を見つけるかもしれない。すなわち、恐ろしく飢えた人材とか事務所からの息を呑む山景とかでは少しもない。
