LINE and KakaoTalk do share similar “cool factors” plus interesting features, but LINE has the edge in growing users with their hugely popular casual games (remember LINE Pop? LINE Bubble?) and kawaii stickers (stamps) distribution.

As you might have noticed, Asian-originated messaging apps employ similar strategies by engaging celebrities in TV commercials and “official accounts” for their fans to follow. On another hand, LINE is working closely with Nokia while KakaoTalk has just partnered with Friendster in Malaysia.

In summary, messaging app providers prefer to work with partners with wide reach in order to boost their brand awareness and ultimately grow user base. They will open up for selective brands (with substantial cost) once they have reached a sizable level of user base.

Interestingly, the first brands that LINE and KakaoTalk are collaborating with locally are all online marketplaces or retailers, namely Rakuten, Groupon and Zalora.

5 things I wish I knew before 500 Startups

There are tons of things that I learned throughout my time at 500 startups. However, these are the five things that I wish I knew better.

If you can’t find anyone who has experienced similar problems before, it will be difficult to address issues like how to scale your back-end performances, understanding term sheets, or decoding investors’ message that is specific to your product.

All mentors offer office hours of at least once per month each batch, or even more. Each ranges from 30 to 45 minutes a session. Make the best use of each mentor’s time by studying their profiles (literally stalk them). Do your homework. Send them an email about your company and a few questions that you want to discuss before the mentorship session. That is how you will make the best use of your mentor’s and your time!

2. Focus on your traction, metrics, and users, instead of product

GreenGar came to 500 Startups with 500,000 monthly active users. What does that mean? I have half a million people to think about every night before I go to sleep, literally. However, we’re not coming to 500 Startups to show off our traction (who cares?), we’re here to make a difference for our company, to take GreenGar to the next level. 500 Startups has a great team that understands distribution and growth hacking. However, it won’t be helpful if you don’t know your metrics. In fact, I think having a great traction like GreenGar has a lot of disadvantages as most people think GreenGar will be doing okay.

2. 自社の製品ではなく牽引力、メトリクス、ユーザに焦点を絞る

GreenGarには50万人のアクティブユーザがいながらも、500 Startupsへやって来た。これはどういうことだろう？実際、このユーザ50万人のことを考えずに寝ない日はほとんどない。しかし、当社が500 Startupsへ参加したのは、自社の牽引力をひけらかすためではない、GreenGarに大きな変化をもたらし、次の段階へ導くためである。500 Startupsには、流通とグロースハックに優れたチームがいる。しかし、自社のメトリクスを知らなければ、これは役に立たない。事実、GreenGarのように、牽引力が大きいと、順調だと思われてしまうことが多いため、デメリットが多い。

We clearly knew how to make apps that people love and we knew how to make money. However, we made a huge mistake. We focused on developing the new product. Our lead developer, myself and my co-founder spent literally 16 hours per day writing 170,000 lines of code per week. We successfully developed the new Whiteboard. However, our metrics did not improve a bit during the three months here. One thing we did right was to listen to Dave McClure’s advice and do intensive user research about our user database. Therefore, at least we knew that the new Whiteboard is the product that all of our users have been waiting for.

3. There will be 1000 pieces of advice. Listen to all, but only choose those that matters.

From the first point, while it is sweet to have 1000 people giving you advice, it can also be the biggest pain in the butt as well. Before Demo Day, we had a month to prepare our final pitch. We pitched to mentors, investors and to each others. “Fake it until you make it” is the term that we use. Everyday, we pitched like it’s the real pitch at the Demo Day. If there were two people watching your pitch, you will get two different pieces of advice. If there were six, you will probably receive five different advice (likely one of them will agree with some other in the group).

最初に、1,000人のアドバイスが聞けるのはすばらしいと思う一方で、わずらわしくもある。Demo Dayまで1ヶ月間、最終プレゼンの準備をした。メンターや投資者に対して、そして互いにプレゼンを行った。「成功したかったら、成功しているように振るまう」、これが我々の決まり文句だ。毎日、Demo Dayの本番だと思って、プレゼンを行った。2人にピッチを見てもらうと、異なる2種類のアドバイスを聞くことになる。6人いれば5種類になることもある（グループのメンバーの1人の人の意見が他のメンバーの意見とかぶることがあるかもしれないので）。

I literally worked on my pitch and my slide deck everyday! It’s about two to three hours or work everyday, between improving the slides and practice. The bottom line is that everyone will spend time to advice you because they want the best for you. They want you to be able to get right attention on Demo Day. And more importantly, everyone wants you to succeed.

Lesson learned: There are no wrong advices. However, there are only a few that are valid for certain periods of time or at certain stages of your company. No one in this world knows your company, your product or your vision better than you.

実際に、プレゼンとスライドに取り組んだ。毎日、約2、3時間、スライドに手を加えたり練習を行ったりした。肝心なのは、みんなが、あなたに最高のプレゼンをしてもらいたいと思う気持ちで、アドバイスしてくれるところだ。Demo Dayに、あなたが注目を集めてもらいたいと考えている。何しろ、みんなで、プレゼンの成功を祈ってくれているところがすごい。

Hi, I'm happy enough to issue a refund and claim from the Royal Mail as a lost item, but am concerned that I can't do that if I issue a refund and you pay again when you receive it. The item should eventually arrive, I should have chosen a more expensive but more reliable system for sending it so far, lesson learnt. WeChat v5.0 Update Arrives on iOS With Social Gaming, Mobile Payments, and Sticker Store

The long awaited update to WeChat, the popular China-made messaging app, has arrived. This morning WeChat v5.0 for iOS is rolling out (to be followed by the Android iteration soon) with social gaming, mobile payments, and a proper sticker store. Plus a flatter iOS 7-style WeChat icon.

待望のWeChatの最新バージョンが登場した。WeChatは中国製人気メッセージアプリである。
今朝、iOS版のWeChat v5.0が展開され、アンドロイド版は続いて展開される予定。WeChat v5.0はソーシャルゲーム、お財布携帯、スタンプストアの新機能を搭載している。その上、フラットデザイン型のiOS 7に使用できる WeChatアイコンも追加された 。

The WeChat sticker shop is the only surprise feature, making it easier to find the animated emoticons that have been a feature of the app from the beginning. WeChat’s mobile payments and social gaming integration have been anticipated for months, and for now are only really useful for Chinese users of the app. (Update: Indeed, a Tencent representative points out that only China users of the app – where it’s called Weixin – get the social gaming center and mobile payment functions).

WeChat has nearly 400 million registered users around the world, with just over 70 million of those outside of China.

(Update: Added in above image of the sticker shop and new Hold Together feature). Mobile payments can be done in WeChat by scanning a QR code or barcode. We’ll test that out once we find a Chinese retailer that supports it.

According to WeChat’s iTunes Store page, the updated app also adds the ability to save favorite content clippings from chats or Moments, and now you can add friends nearby easily with the new Hold Together function.

WeChat v5.0 is now in the iOS App Store.

I asked AQ’s Chris Palmieri about the state of Hitotoki a few months back, and I was pretty excited when he told me that it would be relaunching. After a bit of a wait, the new service is now online and is known simply as Hi, living on the web at SayHi.co [1]. Like Hitotoki, it asks you to ‘sketch’ a moment from where you are, comprised of a photo and some text. The process is optimized for smartphones, geotagging your moment as you add it. Chris notes that Hitotoki and Hi began with the same goal of a 500-word moment, but points out that “how each [one] makes that happen couldn’t be more different.”
