Shenzhen-based Maker BIGnew Pal Helps You with Environmental Monitoring

BIGnew Pal Technologies is a Shenzhen, China- based appcessory developer. Its first product is Air. Air!, an air quality detector designed and prototyped in the wake of reports about a terrible haze in Beijing last year.

It uses the Low Energy Bluetooth to transmit data of air quality and temperature to your iOS or Android devices. It’d alert you when air quality moves below a specific level.

It took less than six months for the team to build a prototype. After having raised over $20,000 on Kickstarter, it has been put into mass production and is expected to ship in January 2014.

BIGnew Pal Technologiesは中国の深圳市に拠点をおき、中国ベースのappcessoryの開発をおこなっている企業である。最初の商品はAir。Air!は昨年北京で報告された薄煙の発生に伴い生まれた、空気汚染を感知するためにデザインされたプロトタイプだ。

Low Energy Bluetoothを利用し空気の質や温度に関するデータを個人のiOSやAndroidといったデバイスに送信する。大気汚染がある程度のレベル以下に感知されると注意喚起もされる。

このプロトタイプの作成には６ヶ月もかからなかった。$20,000をKickstarterで資金を集めた後、大量生産に切り替えた。　2014年の一月には配送予定。

UVindeSir is another product the company is working on (raising funding). It’s a UV index meter. Plugging it into your iPhone or Android phone, you can read UV Index on its app. The app will estimate how much time you should be exposed in any specific weather condition before reaching the maximum amount of UV.

The company is in talks with Moji, one of the most popular weather apps in China, Dayima, a period tracker app, and other Chinese apps to bring more functions to it.

Daxin partners with Ufactory on the tech side. Ufactory, also based in Shenzhen, is an appcessory solution provider.

The company said they were approached by some investors and in talks on a potential investment.

Twofold: 1,700 ‘paid for classes’ students and going strong

Twofold, the Amazon for practical expertise, claims to have about 2,300 registered users and more than 70 active professionals teaching through its platform

Platforms such as Udemy, Coursera and Udacity have long been around to help democratize access to education, which was traditionally only available through educational institutions. Now, anyone can learn almost anything if you are connected to the world wide web.

Twofoldますます好調、1,700人の生徒が有料授業に登録

実践的ノウハウのアマゾンといわれるTwofoldはそのプラットフォーム上で約2,300人の登録済みユーザーと７０名を超える現役のプロの講師を抱えていると言う。　

Udemy, CourseraやUdacity等は一般の人々が教育にアクセスするためのプラットフォームとして既に知られているが、一定の教育機関を通してのみ提供されてきた。しかし今ではネットにアクセスできれば誰でもほぼどんな事も学習が可能となってきた。

In Singapore too, we have companies such as Learnemy, Kezaar and Learnershive, which aim to provide a platform for professionals to teach and share their skills to anyone at a nominal fee. Adding on the list is Twofold. Founded back in July 2011, Twofold is a platform where you can get practical expertise from professionals. As a professional and hoping to teach, you can set up a “teacher” account on Twofold, and the platform will help market your skills to people whom are interested in them.

例えばシンガポールでもLearnemy, Kezaar, Learnershive社などが専門家にプラットフォームを提供しわずかな料金で専門技術を一般に提供している。そこに加わったのがTwofoldである。　2011年の７月に設立されたTwofoldは専門家から実践的技術を学ぶ事ができるプラットフォームである。　専門家で教える事を望んでいる人がいれば、Twofoldで教師の口座を設定するとプラットフォームを通してあなたの専門技術を必要としいる生徒へと結びつける手助けをしてくれる。

To date, Twofold has had over 2,300 registered users on its platform. Some of the listed skills you can learn from professionals listed on Twofold include DJ courses, make up courses, sales courses, SEO courses, besides others. Of the 2,300 registered users, Twofold shared with e27 that over 1,700 individual payments have been ‘paid for’ classes on the site. In between December 2012 and October 2013, the site generated an average of S$1,100 per month by taking a 15% fee from each transaction.

In terms of teachers and coaches, there are over 70 of them active on the platform. Students usually attend group classes, although some coaches do provide one-on-one classes. The platform currently attracts teachers by “emailing them and telling them about the ease of use on Twofold”. The company also holds regular “Learn Over Lunch” sessions where it encourages attendees with minimum five years of experience in their fields to consider teaching.

プラットフォームでは７０名の講師とコーチが活躍中である。普通は複数の生徒からなるクラスに生徒は参加するが、コーチによっては一対一のクラスも提供している。Twofoldでは現在講師を募集する為に『Twofoldの使い勝手の良さをe-mailし宣伝している』。又会社では定期的に『ランチを食べながら学ぼう』を催し、その専門領域で５年を超える人達を対象とし講師となってもらう事を奨励している。

“I derived the classification from the offerings of the other two portals. Learnemy seems to be sports focused (with some programming options) and Kezaar seems to be very food focused. We have those offerings from time to time and do not disallow users from putting those products up. Twofold, however, is more focused on providing expertise that users can use right away in their professional or personal lives,” said Rai.

With regards to that, e27 spoke to Learnemy’s Founder, Elisha Tan, to get her thoughts on the categorization of listings on Learnemy’s platform. When asked if she agreed that Learnemy is focusing on hobbies, Elisha begged to differ: “Hobbies are skills. Playing sports are skills. Playing music instruments are also skills.”

We also understood from Tan that currently, Learnemy has amassed a total of 2,300 registered users (talk about coincidence!) and 100 teachers on Learnemy. As Learnemy is a newer entrant to the space, as compared to Twofold, Learnemy so far has only 513 class payments from its students. Learnemy takes a 20% transaction fee for each class.

For Kezaar and Learnershive, e27 did a quick check on their website and Facebook pages, and it appears that there are minimal activities on their respective platforms.

Twofold is currently raising a funding round of US$750,000. When asked what valuation would the funding round be, Co-founder, Rai told e27 that the company is currently working with its mentors to decide on the valuation.

KezaarとLernershiveに関しても、e27がホームページやFacebookを簡単にチェックした所、夫々のプラットフォームでは最小限の利用しかなされていないようだった。

While the team does not have any official advisors, Co-founder Nityanand told us that he has been constantly getting a lot of advise from Strategia Venture’s Ben Chew as well as NTU Ventures’ mentor Kee Thian Seng. The team has also been reading Jungle Ventures’ venture partner, Lim Der Shing’s personal blog which feature his analysis of investment deals in Singapore from time to time.

Founded by Nityanand Rai, Mohd Rushdy, Michelle Khoo and Kelvin He, the funding will be used for product development, design and marketing, as well as giving the team a three-year runway.
