Lessons From Other Western Mistakes in China

He started traveling to the region every month or two to study the market. “There were already several cautionary tales in the gaming space,” he said. “We were resolved that we weren’t going to spend PopCap’s money until we could really coherently explain the mistakes by Western companies. And I wanted to make new mistakes, not old ones.”

Some of ways in which other Western companies had erred included:

Not giving the local team enough authority or power to make their own decisions: Companies would insist that decisions have to be approved by upper management in the West.
Not hiring a local enough team that really understood the Chinese market: Gwertzman said many U.S. companies would bring in expats and not listen to local staff when they made recommendations.

現地チームに自身で決定を下す権限を十分に与えなかった。: 会社が決定に際して欧米での上層部の承認を得ることにこだわった。

Or they’d do the opposite and hire a Chinese head or GM who was relatively unknown to senior management: Because they didn’t grow up in the culture of the company, their decisions might be second-guessed by central management which was thousands of miles away back in North America or Europe.

Over-investing too early: Companies would set up extremely high revenue expectations right away and when revenue didn’t meet those targets, they would ramp down their investments. “You’d see these huge over-investments and rapid collapses,” he said.

Gwertzman said he started the unit slowly, trying to be cash-flow positive from the outset. Revenue doubled every year subsequently, although this is the first year where it will be meaningful in terms of PopCap’s overall business.

Choosing Platforms in China

The unit’s latest big release has been the social version of Plants Vs. Zombies on the Renren platform, which is quite distinct from the Western version as it marries city-building with the original title’s tower defense elements.

The new Baidu Yi platform will also feature strong cloud integration for storage, back-up and sharing – a key aspect also of Alibaba’s recently-launched mobile OS, called AliYun.

From an introductory video supplied by Baidu, it looks like the Ting mobile app will support MP3 downloads of its licensed music (see screenshot below), which comes from its Baidu Ting web app.

Baidu Yiプラットフォームはストレージ、バックアップ、共有などの強力なクラウド統合を特徴としており、同種の機能はAlibabaが最近発表したモバイル向けOSであるAliYunでも重要機能とされている。

Baidu提供の紹介動画から判断すると、TingはBaiduのTingウェブアプリ上で提供される、ライセンス契約された音楽MP3(下記スクリーンショット参照)のダウンロード機能をサポートするようだ。

This is interesting. When Kik first came out with a whopping 1 million users in 15 days after its debut, Ted Livingston claimed that Kik will “kill SMS” eventually. Then Kik clones sprang up in China, to name a few, Weixin(by Tencent), MiLiao (by Xiaomi Tech), Youni (by Shanda) and the lately Kouxin (口信，means oral message in Chinese, by Qihoo 360). People are speculating that how operator will react as those apps are undermining one of their largest profit channel: SMS. Especially in China, Chinese people have a craving for SMS with 825 billion text messages sent in 2010.

However, Chinese operator seems to take it amazingly well by adapting to the trends rather than stifling those services. China Unicom launched its free-text messaging service Wo You (沃友) couple weeks ago. Now it’s China Mobile’s turn with Feiliao. At present we have little knowledge regarding how much effort China Mobile will put into Feiliao nor do we know how determined China Mobile is to operate the service if by any chance it gets so popular that might even threaten its SMS business which is very profitable. Maybe let’s just wait and see if operator will kill SMS on its own, though this will be the most unlikely case for China Mobile or any operators.

しかしながら、中国の携帯会社はKik類似サービスを圧迫することなく、非常にうまく適応しようとしている。数週間前、China Unicomは無料のテキストメッセージサービスWo You (沃友)を立ち上げた。それに続き、China Mobileは今回Feiliaoを開始した。いまのところ、China MobileがFeiliaoにどれほどの労力をつぎ込むのかや、収益性の高いSMSビジネスを脅かすほどに人気を得る可能性のあるサービスであるFeiliaoにどれほど本気に取り組むつもりかはわからない。我々は自身のSMSサービスを殺す様を見守ることにしよう。China Mobileや他の携帯会社にはあり得ないことだと思うが。

Facebook is Finally Looking At Asia SERIOUSLY

I love Facebook as a product, but sadly its team in Singapore doesn’t live up to the standard. Why? Because the Facebook team in Singapore isn’t very friendly and responsive to the blogger community (or maybe it’s just me).

Google Singapore, on the other hand, is doing an awesome job friending the tech community here in our tiny island. Every Googler — from sales and analytics to the PR folks — are open to talking to anyone. And whenever we have questions for the articles we’re working on, they respond quickly to ensure we meet our deadlines.

Facebook、アジアをやっと真剣に見つめる

私は商品としてFacebookが好きだが、悲しいことにFacebookのシンガポールチームはその基準に沿っていない。その理由はFacebookのシンガポールチームはあまり人なつっこくなく、ブログコミュニティにも反応しないからだ(私だけの意見かもしれないが)。

それにひきかえ、Googleシンガポールはここ小さな島でもハイテクコミュニティーに慣れ親しんで非常に良い仕事をしている。Googleで働いている人はだれでも、販売担当、分析担当、宣伝担当などであれ誰にでも気さくに話しかける。我々の書いている記事に必要なことがあっても、彼らに尋ねれば、締め切りに間に合うように迅速に回答が返ってくる。

Perhaps that may change now that Alexander Kleinberg has joined the Facebook Singapore team. So who’s Kleinberg? We briefly heard his story at the Social Media World Forum in Singapore earlier this evening. Kleinberg is the person who helped Google set up its offices here in Singapore. And he joined Facebook just three months ago.

それもAlexander Kleinberg氏がFacebookシンガポールチームに加わったことで変わるかもしれない。Kleinberg氏とは一体何者だろうか?我々は彼の名前を今晩はやくにシンガポールのソーシャルメディアワールドフォーラムで聞いただけだ。Kleinberg氏はここシンガポールでGoogleのオフィス新設を手伝った人物だ。彼はFacebookにわずか3ヶ月前に加わったばかりだ。

So what does it mean for Facebook in Asia? Nothing much, at least for now. Kleinberg can’t reveal anything until F8, Facebook’s upcoming developer conference on September 22nd in San Francisco is over. But it’s likely that the team in Singapore will play an important role in catalyzing Facebook’s growth in Asia. I wonder if Facebook’s long-rumored expansion to China will be part of his plan?

このことはアジアのFacebookにとってどんな意味を持つのだろうか?今の所、このことはそれほど大きな意味を持たない。Kleinberg氏は9月22日にサンフランシスコで開催されるFacebookの開発者会議F8までは何も明かすことができない。しかしそのチームがFacebookがアジアで拡大するための重要な触媒作用を及ぼすのに一役買う可能性は高い。長い間噂されていたFacebookの中国進出も彼の計画にはあるのだろうか?

Anyway, Facebook is hiring in Singapore. And apart from getting more sales people, I’m happy to see that the social network is looking for an APAC corporate communications manager in its Singapore office. I spoke with Kleinberg briefly before he left and was glad that he is open to taking questions from bloggers like us. He seems like a nice guy who could really transform Facebook Singapore (and, by extension, its Facebook-in-Asia mandate) into an APAC stronghold. We’ll get in touch with him again once F8 is over. Stay tuned.

ByeBye Alipay, 360buy Got Married With UnionPay

We reported back in May that 360buy had removed Alipay, the no.1 online payment solution from its payment methods. No one really knows what’s going on there since then. But yesterday, in Chengdu, at the same place APEC SME Summit 2011 (I was there attending) was held, 360buy together with UnionPay, the national bankcard association in China, announced their strategic partnership on online payment as well as mobile payment solution. We broke the news on weibo and the tweet has been retweeted ~650 times and commented ~140 within several hours. It’s probably for the first time, a leading Chinese eCommerce site said NO to Alipay.

我々は5月に360buyが業界第一位のAlipayを決済方法から削除したことを伝えた。それ以降、実際にはなにが起こっているのか知る人はない。APECのSMEサミット(私も出席していた)が開催されている昨日の成都で360buyと中国銀行カード協会であるUnionPayがオンライン決済とモバイル決済における戦略的提携を結んだことを発表した。我々はWeibo上でこのニュースを伝え、その投稿は数時間で650回リツイートされ140のコメントがついた。おそらく中国の大手電子商取引サイトが初めてAlipayにノーを突きつけた初めてのケースだろう。

Apparently, Liu Qiangdong, CEO of 360buy is not happy with the high commission fee charged by Alipay. He used to complain that the commission fee charged by Alipay is almost 4 times than the other payment gateway provider, and thus 360buy has to pay rmb 5-6 million more. According to 360buy’s official, around 80% of its users are using Pay On Delivery as payment method and only 1-2% transactions are paid via Alipay, so taking Alipay off should not be a big problem for 360buy users.

360buyのCEOであるLiu Qiangdong氏はAlipayの要求する手数料に満足していなかったようだ。彼はよくAlipayの手数料は他の決済事業者の4倍近いと不満を漏らしており、360buyは結果として500万から600万人民元多く支払わなければならなかった。360buyの担当者によると360buy利用者の80パーセントは着払いを支払い方法として選んでおり、Alipayを決済に利用しているのは1から2パーセントにすぎなかったという。そのため支払い方法からAlipayをなくしても、360buyの利用者にはそれほど大きな問題にはならなかったというわけだ。

However, the story behind it might be more complex than we thought. A VP of Dianping (the leading Chinese Yelp) commented on the weibo saying, the true reason caused the split is that 360buy is not happy with Alipay’s keeping the record of all 360buy’s customer data, according to his insider friends.

Also today, on 360buy’s payment methods page, UnionPay has taken place of Alipay and becomes the top recommended payment method. Furthermore, 360buy will also widely adopt UnionPay’s MicroSD Card mobile payment solution for its mobile eCommerce strategy.

しかし、本当のところは我々の考えているよりも複雑かもしれない。Dianpingの副社長(中国版yelp)はWeibo上で事情通の友人に聞いたこととして、360buyとAlipayの仲違いの本当の理由は、Alipayが360buyの顧客データの記録をとり続けていることに不満だったということをコメントしている。

現在、360buyの決済方法ページにはUnionPayがAlipayの代わりに推奨決済方法になっている。360buyはUnionPayのMicroSDカードモバイル決済をモバイル電子商取引戦略に広く採用するつもりだ。

Apparently, Alipay is facing a serious threat from UnionPay, not only on web-based online payment, but also in mobile space. 360buy is the first one said No, and I guess it would not be the last one.

Up for bid from an estate that had many gorgeous items is this great vintage necklace from MIRIAM HASKELL. I was told that it was purchased in the 80's and never worn.

Last month Meituan announced a Series B fund raising of US$ 50 million led by Alibaba, in conjunction with Northern Light Venture Capital, Walden International and Sequoia.

先月、Meituanは5000万ドルのBラウンドの資金調達を行ったと発表した、投資したのはAlibaba、Northern Light Venture Capital、Walden InternationalとSequoiaだった。

Wang said that, the number of group buying sites in China is declining since half a year ago. And he believes that eventually, the No.1 group buying site will take over 70% of all the daily deals market while the second one will grasp 20%, and the rest will have to scramble for the remaining 10%.

According to Hitwise, an internet data research firm, Meituan comes in third in traffic after Lashou and Taobao Juhuasuan(淘宝聚划算). However, Wang claims that Meituan is the largest in terms of local services; for instance, the Chinese Groupon-like service boasts a total of nearly 300 deals per day with over 100,000 orders.

CEO of Dataotuan, Wenli Liao, based on these findings, says “Our general conclusion looking at the July numbers is that, the daily deal market in China is getting tougher for all the players. The top 10-20 players have to start finetuning on all levels as the impulsive “Just publish a deal” period seems to be coming to an end.”
