I tested the device a bit over the past few days and it works a treat. Setting the heater in my cold attic filled the room up with hot air immediately and it looks and feels far safer than similar heaters. This is a fan I’d trust, say, in the kids’ room.

Why is this on TechCrunch? There are a few companies with both design and technology chops. Sonos comes to mind as does Apple. Bang & Olufsen are also in that category. But I think what’s most important about a company like Dyson is that they took commodity hardware and made it alluring.

Alpinestars has recently developed the Tech Air Race System - a highly advanced, electronic airbag safety system that utilizes an advanced data logging unit and dual charge inflation module. Taiwan’s Cubie Hits 6.5 Million Users, Now in 9 Languages

Taiwanese mobile messaging app Cubie recently rolled out four additional languages — Indonesian, German, Italian, and Portuguese — making it available in a total of nine languages. Cubie says that growth in Asia is strong but it is also experiencing traction in Europe and South America. Besides Taiwan, Thailand and Malaysia rank second and third in terms of popularity based on country. Saudi Arabia is fourth followed by the US.

The company currently has 6.5 million downloads and is monetizing by selling cutesy stickers to users. Cubie’s international messenger, James Hill, said that some of its premium stickers are selling quite well and the startup is currently also exploring other revenue streams.

Last month, we looked into how Cubie got featured on Google Play which helped drive 50,000 downloads each day. Cubie last raised $1.1 million from a group of investors, including B Dash Ventures, NTT Investment Partners, Gumi Ventures, and 500 Startups.

In an e-mail interview with e27, the MeetDoctor co-founder and CEO shared about his startup, including the company setup, teammates, value proposition and future milestones.

Tell us more about your startup’s early days.

Actually the idea was coming from me, but then I invited friends — who had the same belief in that idea — to establish this startup. We have developed it since 2011, and October that year was our first beta launch. The development took around six months until its first beta launch, but we are still doing regular development to improve the site today.

The day we started, we only had three non-permanent staffs helping us developing some contents like health articles, interviewing some doctors, etc. Today we staff five employees.

We have more than 16,000 members registered at our site. But the great thing is there are almost 15,000 people visiting our site daily, and we barely did any advertising and promotion.

Among those members, around 35 to 40 percent are considered active. They probably feel the benefit of our platform already, so that they keep coming back whenever they have questions regarding their health.

Cosmetics e-retailer Luxola funded Series A by GREE Ventures

Luxola, a Singapore based online cosmetics and skincare store, has just announced their Series A funding from GREE Ventures, the largest investment the Japanese venture capital firm has made in Southeast Asia to date.

Launched back in September 2011, Luxola.com is a Singapore-based online cosmetics and skincare store. Many international brands have also debuted in the Singapore market and some of the brands featured on the platform includes BECCA Cosmetics, Benta Berry, BY Terry, Dr. Jart, DUO, DuWop, Estelle & Thild, Nuxe, Original Mineral, Phyto, PURE by Phytocare Sara Happ, SK II, Sleek Makeup, Strivectin, This Works and many others.

Prior to the Series A funding, Luxola recently raised funding of S$740,000 (around US$597,000) from a group of investors managed by WaveMaker Labs in collaboration with Singapore National Research Foundation (NRF). The funding round was announced in August 2012. Since then, the company has been expanding to Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and The Philippines. To support the growth, GREE Ventures invested an undisclosed sum into the company. While undisclosed, GREE Ventures told us that this is their largest investment in a Southeast Asia company to day. GREE Ventures also shared with us that the funding falls under the US$25 million dollar GREE Ventures Asia fund.

In addition to announcing its Series A investment, Luxola has also announced the hiring of two senior executives: Chief Marketing and Product Officer Christine Ng and GM of Indonesia Adrien Barthel. Ms. Ng joins Luxola after 13 years of experience in Silicon Valley where she has held senior product and marketing positions at eBay, Sephora and Pop Sugar. Mr. Barthel joins Luxola having spent the last 3 years rolling out the e-commerce platform for Carrefour Indonesia.

GREE Ventures invests in companies with a regional outlook

GREE Ventures, the venture capital arm of GREE, makes series A investments in start-up companies that have the potential to play an active regional role in East Asia and Southeast Asia. This was shared by Kuan Hsu, a Principal with GREE Ventures during our interview with him last year. Kuan echoed that startups in Singapore needs to think pan-Asia and regionally.
