All of this seems crazy, but it is how things operate at the atomic level: The laws of physics are different. Einstein was so skeptical about quantum entanglement that he wrote a paper in 1935 titled “Can quantum-mechanical description of physical reality be considered complete?” He argued that it was not possible.

In a classical computer, information is represented in bits, binary digits, each of which can be a 0 or 1. Because they only have only two values, long sequences of 0s and 1s are necessary to form a number or to do a calculation. A quantum bit (called a qbit), however, can hold a value of 0 or 1 or both values at the same time — a superposition denoted as “0+1.” The power of a quantum computer increases exponentially with the number of qubits. Rather than doing computations sequentially as classical computers do, quantum computers can solve problems by laying out all of the possibilities simultaneously and measuring the results.

There are many complexities in building a quantum computer: challenges in finding the best materials from which to generate entangled photon pairs; new types of logic gates and their fabrication on computer chips; creation and control of qubits; designs for storage mechanisms; and error detection. But breakthroughs are being announced every month. IBM, for example, just announced that it has found a new way to detect and measure quantum errors and has designed a new qubit circuit that, in sufficient numbers, will form the large chips that quantum computers will need.

This time on a smaller screen, the watch app tries to extend the experience to quickly find nearby places of interest recommended by friends. When a user’s current location is nearby a spot saved in one Spottly travel collection, the app alerts them with a notification. Samsung takes back global smartphone sales crown from Apple in Q1 2015

Samsung beat out Apple as the biggest vendor of smartphones worldwide in the first quarter of this year, according to research out today from analyst firm Strategy Analytics.

Samsung held 24.1 percent of the vendor market share in the quarter, while Apple had 17.7 percent, according to an article about the report from the firm. In the fourth quarter of 2014 — the holidays — the two mobile device makers were neck and neck, with 19.6 percent market share each, the firm found.

Samsung sells popular Android smartphones like the Galaxy S6 Edge and the Galaxy Note. Apple has been increasingly directing its focus at the Apple Watch.

The smartphone market as a whole grew by 21 percent year over year in the quarter, which is slower than the growth rate in every quarter of 2014, Strategy Analytics is reporting.

KKBox launched in 2005 as an Asian answer to iTunes, wherein users subscribed to unlimited music streams as an alternative to paid downloads or piracy. The company currently charges a monthly fee of NT$149 (about US$5) for access to its library, and is accessible in Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Thailand. It has over five million paying subscribers as of 2014, and raised US$104 in a funding round led by Singapore’s GIC last August.

No all-you-can-eat free tier exists, but the company has said it will launch one soon.

Spotify’s expansion into Asia in late 2013 led many Taiwanese to question the future KKBox. Co-founder Chris Lin told Tech in Asia last year that its long-standing relationships with long-tail labels in Asia would help it retain its users. Even so, the company continues to stay nimble. Besides launching KKTix and acquiring WalkieTicket, the company also invested in Paganini+, a real-time bidding platform. That purchase will likely help pay the bills for a soon-to-launch free tier – a must-have in the age of Spotify and YouTube.
