Cacoo Gives You a Virtual Whiteboard for Google+ Hangouts

We’ve written about Japanese startups Cacoo a few times before. You may recall that they operate a collaborative web service that can be used to create diagrams, charts, and mind maps with others. Just now I received a mail from them saying that Cacoo now can work in Google Hangouts.

以前日本のスタートアップのCacooに関して何回か紹介したことがあるので、Cacooが、図表やマインドマップを使って他の人達と一緒に作業ができるウェブサービスを提供していることは記憶にあると思う。同社からGoogle Hangoutsで作業が可能になっとたった今、連絡をもらった。

Note that I’m in Tokyo, and my colleagues Steven and Charlie are both in China. First I had to proceed to Cacoo’s website, specifically launch-hangouts.cacoo.com. From there I could launch the Hangouts session, and invite Steven and Charlie to join. First I had to authorize the Cacoo app with my Google account (as did Steven and Charlie), but from there it was pretty smooth sailing.

We quickly made a little chart of our TechInAsia contributor structure (see below). This is not really complete or anything, so apologies to our great contributors in Thailand, India, and elsewhere. But you get the idea. We could all add items at the same time, and in a few moments we had a very simple chart.

Of course, if you’re well-versed in the tools that Cacoo provides, then you can likely do something far more complex than this. There’s always screen-sharing over Skype of course, but the collaborative element with Cacoo in Google Hangouts is pretty neat.

Personally, I’m not sure if I really have any need for such a solution, but when we heard from the startup last, they had a strong user base of 200,000. And as of today, a representative tells is that the service is being used by 420,000 users in 120 different countries.

もちろん、Cacooが提供しているツールに精通していれば、これよりもっと複雑な事ができるのだ。もともとSkypeでも画面共有はできるが、Google Hangoutsで行うCacooの共同作業は、かなり手際よく行えるのだ。

個人的には、このようなソリューションが本当に必要かどうか分からないが、同社から先日聞いた内容では、ユーザー基盤は既に20万人に達しているそうだ。また、広報担当者によると、このサービスは現在、120か国で42万人のユーザーに利用されているとの事だ。

FoodPanda Indonesia has 81 partner restaurants so far in Jakarta ranging from Nobuzen, 4 Fingers, Trattoria Il Sale, and even local foods such as Bebek Goreng Surabaya. I believe it has a good chance to be big in Indonesia, especially since people have grown weary of call centers for ordering food delivery, an experience that often sucks. Ordering through the internet can be frictionless and faster, especially if done via a mobile app in the future.

FoodPanda Indonesiaは、今のところジャカルタではNobuzen、4 Fingers、Trattoria Il Sale等、81のレストランと提携し、Bebek Goreng Surabayaの様な郷土料理までも扱っている。コールセンター経由で料理のデリバリーサービスを利用するは面倒で、皆うんざりしてしまったので、インドネシアで成功するチャンスは大いにあると思う。インターネット経由で注文するのは、ストレスがなく、より早い。モバイルアプリから将来注文できれば、特にそうだ。

“Put yourself in the shoes of who’s coming to your site,” says Frankel. “What are they trying to get done? Think about the goal of your potential customer.” Pepper the site with action items to help customer easily do what you want them to do. Birchbox has done a good job of this, encouraging users to “learn more” and directing them to claim a gifted Birchbox, since it’s a popular gift item and giftees are likely to be first-time visitors.

5. Security

If you’re selling anything online, you need to put some effort into securing your site with an SSL certificate.

5. セキュリティー
もしネットで何かを販売しているなら、サイトのセキュリティーをSSL証明で強化する必要がある。

The SSL will encrypt communications between you and your clients (i.e. a credit card number, Social Security number), which will allay their fears of providing such information, since there’s so much identity theft on the web. VeriSign, TrustE, Entrust and GeoTrust are good options to explore.

Twitter. Facebook. Tumblr. YouTube. Pinterest. Google+. LinkedIn. Instagram. Foursquare. There are a lot of social platforms out there, and you should promote your presence on them on your website, because social media is critical part of marketing your business. Though not a traditional business, digital savvy Team Coco does a great job promoting its many social channels on the website.

Twitter、Facebook、Tumblr、YouTube、Pinterest、Google+、LinkedIn、Instagram、Foursquare等、様々なソーシャルプラットフォームが存在している。今やビジネスを売り込む上でそのソーシャルメディアは欠かせないものになっており、そこにちゃんと存在をアピールしていることが自身のサイトからもわかる様にすることだ。従来のビジネスではないが、デジタル業界に精通しているTeam Cocoは、ウェブ上で同社の多くのソーシャルチャンネルを実にうまく宣伝している。

Smartphones and tablets are driving an increasing amount of web traffic, and the numbers are only going to grow as mobile devices become cheaper and more mainstream. Andy Chu, director of Bing for Mobile, says 70% of task completion happens within one hour on mobile sites, meaning that people are often browsing on the web with intent — they’re looking to do something, buy something or go somewhere. If someone searches for a restaurant on his smartphone, he’s likely to eat at that restaurant within the hour, says Chu. So your website better be readable on handheld devices.

“We’re the leader in the U.S. market, but we’re kinda like a rookie in China”, said Alvin. Speaking of the differences between Chinese and American reading apps, he thought that “in the States each app has its own uniqueness, while in China there’re so many clones. Some even totally ripping off our source code. We’re considering filing a report with Apple on that matter.”

He went on to note that one edge of local players is faster connection due to their China-based servers, and it would be a large investment if they do the same thing. So there’s no imminent plan to move some of Flipboard’s servers to China. As for content, he believed that even though their Chinese rivals have so much more content, that doesn’t mean the quality is as good as Flipboard China’s. They’re putting more focus on the quality of content.

Alvin also noted that currently there’s no revenue plan for Flipboard’s China operation, the company will try to craft a nice product with excellent user experience for the competitive and challenging market before considering making profit in China. There’re too many challenges in China, but it also has fruitful opportunities.

Developers See Google as Bigger Growth Area Than Facebook

Facebook may have been a hunting ground last year for developers expanding their social mobile programs, but their sights are set on growing with Google in 2012, a new study suggests.

According to a new report by mobile platform company Appcelerator and analyst firm International Data Corporation (IDC), developers are more interested in using Google products such as Google+, search, Gmail and the Android Market to implement their social strategies.

The survey — which was conducted among 2,173 developers worldwide — found that 39% of participants said the network effects of Google’s initiatives are more important to their social strategies in 2012 than Facebook’s social graph.

“Google is learning some good lessons from Facebook about what not to do and what to do better,” Appcelerator principal analyst Michael King told Mashable. “We didn’t expect Google to expect to do so well against Facebook, but it puts them at an advantage. Many developers now see Google as offering more opportunities for growth than Facebook.”

The report also found that developers have expressed less interest in developing Android apps this year “due to continued fragmentation of the platform” and are looking to expand their iOS efforts. It noted that HTML5 will play a bigger role in the mobile app development space this year.

About 79% of mobile developers who took the survey indicated they plan to integrate HTML5 into their apps in 2012. Not surprisingly, overall mobile app development continues to grow. More than half (53.5%) said they are focusing on mobile strategies compared to 27.4% in 2010.

I have just returned from the UPS store where I shopped the Linn Sondek to you. I packed it very carefully, stuffed with material and bubble wrap and taped over and over into a sort of cocoon. Be careful when you unpack it for I wound protective bubble

Reality: It is less important whether you have failed before or how many times you have failed that prepares you for success, but what qualities you possess when the moment of opportunity comes your way. You can continue failing in future endeavours if you never learn the lessons from the previous ones.

Similarly, you can equip yourself with the right tools in place before you embark on a project, so that the current doesn’t become the failure that prepares you for the next one. These tools can range from having the right specialists in the team, market analysis, funding, roll-out strategy.

You don’t need to fail first, in order to know what you need.

失敗しなくても、何が必要かは知ることができる。
