The hole in App Annie’s data, however, is WeChat, which started monetizing from stickers, games, and in-app payments last year. App Annie pulls it’s data from Google Play and the Apple App Store, which means its stats for Chinese Android apps are likely skewed. Google Play is seldom used in China because it can’t be installed on most phones sold within the mainland. Much like Line’s mammoth revenues likely originate from Taiwan and Japan, WeChat’s likely originate primarily from mainland China. So while both apps are technically top earners globally, they remain regional kings in a fragmented global space.

Beer company invests $4 million in an NFC card to replace cash in the Philippines

Last November, brewing company San Miguel Beer announced its plans to enter into the telco business. While this is not yet finalized, the conglomerate has made another entrance into the tech sector as it invests about Php 200 million ($4.4 million) to launch an NFC reloadable cash card called the Sweep card.

With only three percent credit card penetration in the Philippines, the goal of the Sweep cards is to slowly turn the country into a cashless society. Its purpose will be similar to Hong Kong’s Octopus card, which allows them to use the card for train payments and store purchases. In the Philippines, the Sweep card will allow its users to pay at stores by simply tapping the card on a terminal.

San Miguel Corporation senior vice president Aurora Calderon told Manila Bulletin that it currently has 1,000 terminals in its 100 parner shops. It aims to have 6,000 terminals by March and a million cardholders by the end of the year.

It’s unknown when or what a percentage of the advertising revenues Tencent will share with third-party publishers. But publishers that heard about the news today feel encouraging. There are other players, such as Sohu and Sina, are also building mobile platforms for third-party publishers and promised to share income with them. But today no one thinks anyone could be so powerful as WeChat.

After-school Tutoring Service TAL Education Injects 150 Million Yuan in Childcare Portal Babytree

TAL Education (NYSE:XRS), a K-12 after-school tutoring services provider formerly known as Xueersi, announced today it will inject 150 million yuan ($24.79 million) of strategic investment in childcare portal Babytree. Babytree has secured a combined $20 million of investments in previous rounds.

The acquisition of Babytree will help TAL to include pre-school children into its target customers. TAL has acquired education site Kaoyan.com for 50 million yuan last year.

Babytree, a leading Chinese digital resources and community for maternal and childcare services, is cofounded by former Google China exec Wang Huainan and former cofounder of EachNet Shao Yibo in 2007. The company provides all-round professional information on baby care and health. In addition to the baby and maternal site Babytree.com, Babytree operates pre-school education brand Mika, and seven mobile apps. Moreover, Babytree also launched cooperation with hardware companies to develop a smartwatch for pregnant women and a smart photo frame.

“So we got doctors to help out by giving namecards to patients. We eventually accumulated a database of 3,000 patients,” says co-founder and CEO Abhinav Krishna, a serial entrepreneur and engineer who has built trading systems for investment banks.

The founders, after talking to patients, realized that they are comfortable with sharing their medical details online, and are even willing to pay for a web and mobile fitness tracking app, which they eventually developed along with their enterprise product.

However, they decided to pare down on the number of products they’re working on, even though they’ve been testing their fitness app for eight months. Krishna says:

Zepp, a Sports Tracking Wearable Maker, Raises $15 Million of Series B Funding

Zepp, a manufacturer of sports tracking wearables, secured $15 million of Series B financing from GGV Capital, Legend Capital, Bertelsmann and Cherubic Ventures. The company previously booked $5 million of Series A financing from Legend Capital.

The company’s flagship product is a 6.3g square wearable sensor powered by 3D motion technologies. According to data released by the company, the sensor contains a powerful ARM processor and multiple sensors, with a battery life of eight hours and enough memory to store information for 200,000 swings at 1,000 data points per second.

The data thus collected can be transferred to either Android or iOS-enabled smartphones or tablet immediately via Bluetooth.

The product is currently on sale for $149.99, but only in packages composed of a sensor, rackets, gloves, and a charger.

Mobile Karaoke App Changba Adds Live Broadcast, Closer to YY Music’s Business Model

Changba, the most popular mobile Karaoke app in China, added a live-singing feature for users to have friends to sing together, just like in a room of a brick-and-mortar Karaoke club.

Unlike in the offline world that only invited friends can join in a Karaoke party, all the singing parties on Changba are open to every user. Named ‘Karaoke show in private rooms’, the channel in Changba shows all the singing parties. Any user is allowed to open a room and rooms can be searched by room numbers.

An investor of such a service once told me that fans feel more encouraged to buy virtual gifts to singers during live shows. The revenue growth of YY Inc. has been driven by the live singing show business. So far Changba is the only one of those above-mentioned that started and has been focusing on mobile. YY Music moved slower on mobile, but the company said in late 2013 that they found it easier to make money on mobile than previously thought.

WeChat 5.2 Supports Nine Categories of Mobile Payments

As expected, WeChat released an update today, one day after its third birthday. The same as the last update, the Android was out first and now only available on MyApp, Tencent’s Android app distribution platform (You have to download the MyApp app first in order to download the latest WeChat).

It now supports making payments for Didi (the taxi app venture backed by Tencent), Licaitong (the mutual fund, released several days ago, similar t to Alipay’s Yuebao), purchases on Tencent’s online retailer Yixun, QQ Coins (the virtual currency used in Tencent ecosystem), movie tickets, lottery tickets, making donations, phone bills and splitting bills.
