Remember in science class where we were introduced to the Periodic Table of Elements listing substances and telling their weight and characteristics? I have often wondered whether we could have a Periodic Table of Kindness, with different projects attitudes and goals we could nurture to make this world a better place. So I was astonished when I saw this actualized at TED Women by the filmmaker Tiffany Shlain. She presented on a film project "The Science of Character" and event—Character Day, February 5, 2014—with the same purpose in developing more positive human characteristics in our school children. I asked her for permission to reprint it here at Rogerebert.com.

Singapore is a cauldron of activity with throngs of people crammed into a small area, but it manages somehow to maintain a sense of order and calmness. Downtown, modern high-rises alongside aging colonial architecture frame broad leafy streets and lush parks, making this a wonderful city for walking. Ethnic neighborhoods offer fascinating glimpses, and tastes, of different cultures, and a series of quays along the river provide plenty of opportunity for al fresco dining. During the frequent torrential downpours and the heat of the day, you don’t have to miss a beat, descending into a sprawling series of underground malls connected by pedestrian tunnels and an easy-to-use subway system.

One such subway line carried me out to my job site the next day in the suburbs, emerging above ground into a residential area studded with lots of technology company campuses. The work I did there over the next few days was interesting, but what I really remember is lunch. Lunch was at an open air food court and market, Mosquewhere technology workers sat in long tables enjoying fresh made soups, stews, meat skewers and fried things, a mix of Malaysian, Indian and Chinese.

I don't know if I am drawn to them exclusively. There are lots of stuff that I have been trying to get made. The next one of mine has a lot of heart in it, but isn't inspirational. "The Blind Side" took forever to get it out of 20th Century Fox in turnaround. It was one of three different movies I was involved with then. "The Blind Side" just happened to be the one that got made. I don't know. It is kind of interesting how some people think, "It moved me, so then I must be manipulated." Every director knows it is his job to be manipulative. When you make an edit, you are trying to manipulate. When you use a certain song. We live in a very cynical world. I was moved, therefore it's bad. Life is not that simple.

You wouldn't know why she was being so vigilant about her work without knowing her past. It would be a one-note, fun movie without the other part and not nearly as interesting. It is good to know that the sadness in "Mary Poppins" came from that little girl and her broken family. At that age, she wanted someone to come in and fix it. Aunt Ellie couldn't do that. As a creative person, you turn around and invent Mary Poppins, who could do that. She knew if Disney made the movie all this would be dredged up again for her.

The next morning before sunrise, while the surrounding volcanoes were still veiled in a rosy mist, I shared a ride with other tourists to the Parc National des Volcans. The park was the base for Dian Fossey, who studied the primates here in the Virunga mountain range for two decades, as recounted in her biography "Gorillas in the mist".

At the entrance, we were divided into small groups of 8 people and assigned guides. Each guide is in touch by walkie-talkie with trackers on the slopes of the volcano, to guide the visitors towards the few groups of gorillas who have been habituated to human presence. We set off along pastures and fields, then into the thick rainforest.

We trudged up muddy paths. We clawed our way through thickets of bamboo.
We clambered over fallen trunks. We sweated. At last, after hiking more than two hours, we reached a ridge. Ahead of us lay the crater of the dormant volcano, covered in thick, lush vegetation.

"The gorillas are down there," said the guide, pointing to what looked like impenetrable green. Working our way down, we came across the trackers. The family of a dozen individuals that they had been following was just a little further on, so it was time to prepare for our encounter. Drop our rucksacks here. Take nothing but cameras, flash off. No pointing. No shouting. No touching the animals. And our hushed group marched ahead excitedly.

The only white person in the van, squeezed in between way more passengers than the van was conceived for, I spent the three-hour long ride admiring the view.

Known as the "land of thousand hills", Rwanda is a country of understated beauty. Even the steepest hills are terraced, with tiny plots quilting the reddish-brown earth. Shimmering eucalyptus trees line the roads. Finally we reached the small town of Ruhengeri, above which loomed the huge mass of the Karisimbi volcano, turning blue in the late afternoon light.

The general story is familiar, perhaps even predictable, to anyone who has ever read about child stars, but seldom has it been told with such intimacy and immediacy. Few people can ever have reflected on the fate of child stars as thoroughly as Cary, or had as much reason to do so, and her unique insight gives the film a vibrancy few documentaries about silent cinema can match. There is no one else alive able to articulate the experiences she discusses.
To her, Baby Peggy is another human being, a role she performed, to be spoken about in the third person. This is unsurprising, given the gulf between the infant who was onscreen in the 1920s and the elderly woman who looks back at her from the 21st Century.

But what is surprising is that she thought of Baby Peggy as a separate person even when she was a child. Even at four-years-old she knew the responsibilities attached to playing Baby Peggy, onscreen and in life, and she knew that made her something more, and something less, than a child. "I thought I was a grown-up," she says. "I knew I was the breadwinner."
Forty years later, looking at her young son, she felt surges of resentment towards him because he was simply sitting and playing on the floor of their house. Why, she wanted to demand of him, was he not out working? The psychological cost of being Baby Peggy was severe.

Sixty-two percent of North American employees report high levels of stress with extreme fatigue and feeling out of control, according to a recent survey from Chicago-based, global employee assistance program provider ComPsych. In Europe, 51% of workers feel that work-related stress is common in their workplaces, according to a 2013 European Agency for Safety and Health at Work poll conducted in 31 countries.

End-of-year holidays tend to compound that stress. American pop singer Andy Williams may have crooned it “the most wonderful time of the year” — but, for many workers, the last two months of the year can be downright painful.

Motorists are paying the lowest average petrol prices for more than two and a half years, according to the AA.

The average price at the pump has fallen from 132.16p a litre in October to 130.44p.

UK prices have fallen from a high of 138.38p in September, helped in part by a stronger pound.

The cost of diesel has also fallen from 139.12p a litre in mid-October to 137.78p in the middle of this month, the AA report showed.

The fuel price data is supplied by research firm Experian Catalist.

The cheapest price for supermarket petrol in built-up areas ranged from 126.7p a litre in towns with strong competition to 131.9p in those without, usually small market and coastal towns, the report said.

"You cannot understate the importance of lower pump prices," said AA president Edmund King.

"That is why, when the independent retailers say they would get significant savings from delaying the payment of fuel tax, the AA wholeheartedly supports the move if it helps the remote rural and other small petrol stations to survive.


"But in the many towns where our members and other drivers complain about pump prices being 5p a litre higher than a few miles up the road, extra relief for the retailers should be reciprocated with fairer pump prices."

There are warnings that prices could rise again soon.
