The Philadelphia Fed Index, also known as the Business Outlook Survey, is a survey produced by the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia which questions manufacturers on general business conditions. The index covers the Philadelphia, New Jersey, and Delaware region. Higher survey figures suggest higher production, which contribute to economic growth. Results are calculated as the difference between percentage scores with zero acting as the centerline point. As such, values greater than zero indicate growth, while values less than zero indicate contraction.

The Philadelphia Index is conducted monthly by the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia and questions voluntary participants on things such as unemployment, new orders, shipments, inventories, and prices paid. The report is released on the third Thursday of every month, making it the earliest such regional report which is released to investors.

Tencent and Nokia’s Success in China Explained

10.21am: We heard about the Tencent-Nokia partnership. But why? Shaodong Zheng of Nokia explained that Symbian was chosen because:

(1) Strong relationship with Tencent,

(2) high market penetration in China. Nokia’s feature phones are widely used in China and,

(3) strong communication and synergy in expertise and resources between both comanies.

MeeGo wasn’t chosen because it can’t grow quickly in the short term. However, Tencent and Nokia is keeping an eye on MeeGo’s progress. Interestingly, Android wasn’t chosen as both companies wanted to give users more choice.

California authorities accused insurer John Hancock of withholding benefits from widows and other beneficiaries by allegedly failing to determine if its customers were dead.

John said the state had reached a settlement with Hancock, and said it was the first resulting from an audit of 21 insurance companies that Mr. Chiang began nearly three years ago.

In an interview, he characterized the avoidance of benefit payments as a widespread practice and said he expected to forge settlements or take actions such as lawsuits against other insurers.
Hancock said it is "outraged by the unsubstantiated allegations and characterizations," with respect to specific assertions in a statement　by the controller's office.
