Select number of measurement cycles by setting PRST[1:0] register(1time, 4times, 8times, and 16times). Sensor
outputs interrupt signal or judgment result of detection/non-detection state by detecting threshold setting cycles
continuously. This function helps to decrease malfunction by noise such as flash of camera.

2.8. Resolution/Measuring time
ALS mode : Resolution and measuring time can be changed by setting RES_A[2:0] register.
PS mode : Resolution and measuring time can be changed by setting RES_P[2:0] register.

2.9. Maximum measurable range
ALS mode : Maximum measurable range can be changed by setting RANGE_A[2:0] register.

2.10. Intermittent operating function
This function is to reduce average consumption current by stopping part of circuit intermittently, and this is different from software shutdown function. Intermittent operating duration can be changed by setting INTVAL[1:0] register. Setting a longer intermittent operating duration makes LED average consumption current lower. However, update period of the detection result becomes long. It will make response time of detecting longer.
2.11. LED drive peak current setting
Change drive peak current by setting IS[1:0] register. (LED drive peak current is 16.3mA, 32.5mA, 65mA and 130mA)

LED modulation frequency setting can be changed by setting FREQ register. (Freq:327.5kHz, 81.8kHz at pulse width:1.5usec only) Setting a lower modulation frequency makes LED average consumption current lower.

2.14. Software reset All registers can be initialized by writing 1 to RST register. RST register value also becomes 0 automatically which is initial value.

Recently, Bill Gates was quoted in Rolling Stone as saying:

Innovation in California is at its absolute peak right now. Sure, half of the companies are silly, and you know two-thirds of them are going to go bankrupt, but the dozen or so ideas that emerge out of that are going to be really important…innovation is the real driver of progress.

Like so many others, Gates emphasizes “innovation” without investigating the relentless iteration that has been the key driver behind the Valley’s long-term success. The combination of iterative business models, execution, and geographic network effects has created a dynamic environment in which entrepreneurs can build upon each other’s successes and failures. That is not to discount the value of traditional scientific innovation and basic R&D as important “real drivers” of progress.

However, the Valley’s comparative advantage has not been in innovating. Rather, it provides the environmental and cultural incentives necessary for companies to commercialize products and technologies through a process of constant iteration.

Often these environmental incentives function as self-fulfilling prophecies. Perhaps the self-reinforcing nature of these processes is the true driver of iterative development in the Valley, providing a framework whereby idea origination and execution can complement one another by drawing on the successes and failures of previous generations.

How Farmville Hit it Big

A more recent example of iteration triumphing over innovation is Zynga gaming hit, Farmville. The concept for Farmville was based on a Japanese farming simulation game called Harvest Moon, first released for Super Nintendo in 1996. Later, in 2008, the social network based farm game Happy Farm was released by developer 5 Minutes on the Tencent QQ platform. Borrowing heavily from these previous iterations, Zynga released Farmville in 2009. As noted by Mark Skaggs, VP of Product Development for Zynga, the team’s original idea was to make a real time strategy (RTS) game for Facebook.

Skaggs describes the development process, another key aspect of the game which built on previous infrastructure, as follows:

We had multiple teams working on multiple titles at our company, and we simply grabbed pieces of code from other teams in the interest of shipping the game quickly. For example, our avatar creator was borrowed from YoVille. We’ve got pieces from the Mafia Wars team, the Poker team. Behind the scenes, a lot of the server code—transaction infrastructure, those kinds of technologies we were able to leverage from other teams as well.

Farmville was not unique in its idea, but was unique in its ability to execute, simply and elegantly, the well-trodden territory of a resource accumulation game. As with Shockley’s transistor, iterations rather than innovations significantly accelerated the development process, leading to a successful product release.

The Sharing Economy’s Iterative Winners

For many start-ups, the confluence of iterative product development and sound execution leads to success—not the initial idea. As James Hong, co-founder of Hot or Not and an angel investor, said to me, “Winners in Silicon Valley are not necessarily more innovative, but they are the ones that execute.”

For example, the company AirBnB was not the first online short-term housing rental service. Among others, VRBO launched in 1996 (which Homeaway acquired in 2006), Couchsurfing.orglaunched in 1999, and Craigslist had a long history of matching apartment renters with sub lessors. However, AirBnB was successful, not because of the tweaked idea (a network of bed and breakfasts), but rather, because of a series of small iterations, from a well-designed interface, to a low-barrier of entry that opened up a new ‘passive’ marketplace, to a system of accountability that forced rapid responses to solve the asymmetry problem that continues to plague sites such as Craigslist.
